My comment was provoked by another video on here of an XJS being driven well, wish I could link it, and having owned one of these cars for neigh on 30 years. They are not a sports car but they are a very capable GT and on a road like that they are a delight to drive. If you ever get the chance do not be afraid to throw it into a corner, they do stick.

    I never understood why Jaguar discontinued the option of ordering a manual transmission with the V12 XJS after 79'. I know it was only a four speed back then and on the pre HE engine, so sales weren't great because of crippling single digit fuel economy, but the HE's lean burn cylinder heads were developed to help with that and boost sales. Even though it did, to some extent, help sales and save the car, I can't help but think Jaguar really dropped the ball by not offering the more efficient engine with a 5 speed manual. As this video, and others like it, shows, the XJS becomes a whole different beast without that stodgy old 3 speed auto hooked up to the engine. They even went racing with the XJS, with the cars prepped by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, had a successful career, and you could even buy a special TWR edition road car, but it still only had that bloody 3 speed! It's well known that racing success sells cars, so surely they must have lost potential buyers, who, after looking into buying a new XJS, because of it's racing pedigree, only to find out there was no manual option. The car still had quite an impressive production run, by the end of which the V12 was up to 6.0L, which I can't help but think would have been pretty bloody awesome mated to a 5 or even 6 speed manual. There would have been nothing to rival it, at that price range anyway, as the only other front engined V12 manual GT's had Ferrari badges on them and were 3x the price. Instead we had to make do with the car as a swift, rather than fast, boulevard cruiser. To anyone still here, I apologise, as each time I leave a comment I always end up rambling!

    Hey mate love the car, love to see you driving it with spirit. One critique is that when double clutching as you change down, a few times you'd rev and select the gear, but you slowly let the clutch out, and the time elapsed causes the engine speed to drop, ultimately it is then the inertia of the vehicle that would actually lift the engine speed back up again, not you. (watch your tacho at about 3:10) Plan to rev a touch higher after you have returned to neutral than need be so that as soon as you disengage the clutch to select the gear, you go straight into gear and then immediately and quickly you can release, or, "dump" the clutch. Ideally- road (transmission, input shaft and clutch plate) speed and engine (pressure plate and flywheel) speed are the same and all you are doing is mating the two and allowing transmission of power when you do return to the throttle, or, allow it to deaccelerate. In doing this you are not forcing the engine speed up or down via the transmission and the vehicles inertia. Therefore, no change in speed from either will mean no energy is absorbed and it will be smooth and feel very natural. A good double clutch will allow for quick shifts that ease wear on synchros, and on all drivetrain components, aside from the minimal increase of wear and tear to the clutch control, (throwout, fork and pivot etc.) It can take some practise but a snappy double clutch down will leave you feeling like a god. Confidence to spin the engine and release that pedal quickly takes time. Hope that helps, id love to see another video of you soon!

    @dusty ol durry Hey Mate thanks for your comprehensive feedback! I really appreciate it! And you are absolutely right ...have to work on my double clutching technic .. there's a lot of room left to improve, however hard if you're driving an automatic as a daily driver ;-) Beside MY technical skills there's is a another thing to consider ... the XJ-S clutch system uses a "clutch damper" ..I wonder if it's a good idea to remove this thing... It's winter here now In Germany so my car is in storage.. however I'm planing to do some "technical explanation videos" in the next weeks... stay tuned!

  • @thatrowl

  • @thatrowl

    @thatrowl

    Hi. While technically you are right I might add a few things. Usually that’s their job. Practically speaking- that’s the least desirable way to change down. it puts a lot more stress on your synchros, and clutch,, engine mounts and really the whole drivetrain. The synchro has to raise the speed of the clutch and input shaft all the way up to the speed of the lower gear, then when you engage the clutch you’re using the vehicles momentum to raise the engine RPM Via the clutch. It’s harsher on the drivetrain and rough as hell. You’ll find it not a lot quicker. Plus the feeling of rev matching a gear so precisely that you can snap the gear with nearly zero assistance from the synchro and literally drop the clutch with zero difference in input shaft and engine speed is so fulfilling, smooth and damn fun. Happy double clutching :D

    Because our hands are generally more precise than our feet - might be easier to double clutch downshift if you view the double clutch as being one single (slow when learning) fixed movement of two clutch pumps, and then ignore that and focus on timing the gear shift movement to match the clutch pumps, and after you are confident with that add in the rev matching on the second pump. I think right now you are timing clutch movement to match the gear shift movement, which makes it harder to rev match. Anyways seems like a good car to learn manual shifting 😊

    Sounds awesome! Is this a getrag 265 manual? Did you buy this kit from simplyperformance? Did you have to make a hole in the bell housing for the starter bulge?What’s driving the speedo? A gearbox drive or a GPS speedo?

    @thermalpaste Thanks! Yes this is a Getrag 265 (from Ebay) with a conversion kit from SimplyPerformance. I have not modified the bell housing for the starter. However in the same step, I've installed a compact new HighPerformance starter... As my car is a 1988 one, my speedo pickup is in the rear diff. So no need for any modifications here...

    @ZGERMAN Thank you! hard to guess the HP. The engine is a euro spec high compression Engine, so I was starting at 299 HP...With those intake and exhaust mods maybe around 330 HP ... one important factor is that you will probably gain around 10 percent power at the wheels trough the manual gearbox. Btw.. will do a video explaining my mods in the next weeks ... stay tuned!

    @A K Dankeschön! Die Anlage ist von AJ6 Engineering aus England. In Sachen TÜV - ja man könnte das tatsächlich mit "drauf und fertig" zusammenfassen 😉 Fakt ist, dass es für den XJS ja kaum "Original" Anlagen gibt - so viele Möglichkeiten gibt es da also nicht. Die Anlage sieht von aussen (hinten) komplett original aus und da der Rest des Autos auch möglichst nahe am original gehalten ist, gab es beim TÜV bisher nie (auch nicht bei der H Abnahme) Probleme damit. Sowohl beim "Hinterhof TÜV" als auch bei der offiziellen TÜV Prüfstelle, wo man ja schon mal etwas genauer hinschaut 🙄😉

    @CHAOS GAMING Well this depends upon a few things. Overall the later (Facelift) cars are much more modern with Airbags, ABS and even OBD diagnostics. Beside this you feel the impact of the Ford ownership... I always wanted a Pre Facelift car ...with this classic touch ...more Chrome, less technical gimmicks, etc. And, as I'm living in Germany I can run a car from the 80's legally without any emission stuff and therefore get a few more horsepower ;) From a working point ..it doesn't make much of a difference... the later cars got outboard rear brakes but more Electronics and the earlier cars vice versa ...

    Your next modification should be equal length exhaust manifolds for a higher pitched race car sound (Just like Tom Walkinshaw's TWR XJS)

  • @contributor7219

    @contributor7219

    3 жыл бұрын

    The TWR cars ran cast iron manifolds because the Group A regulations required they did. The regulations, however, did not restrict the casting used other than the inlet and exhaust flanges requiring the same external dimensions as the factory manifolds. As a result, the TWR cars had a larger manifold volume and had dividers cast internally to keep the exhaust gases from each cylinder separated until the engine pipe flanges. The unique sound of the TWR cars comes from those unique cast iron manifolds. Tubular equal length manifolds result in a very different sound on the Jaguar V12. If you search hard enough online you might be able to find images of those unique manifolds.

    I’m considering doing the Getrag manual conversion thru Simply Performance on a 1991 XJ-S V12. Do you think that it is a must to change the rear differential from the stock 2.88 to 3.54? Do you think that there is a dramatic change in torque or acceleration? Would you prioritize changing the rear diff or spending the cash on upgrading the exhaust (my exhaust options are limited because I have cats)? Thanks!

  • @v12gents

    @v12gents

    3 жыл бұрын

    @James Barton Changing the diff is not a must, however I would highly recommend it (and yes over the exhaust). The Getrag ratio fits the 3.54 very well. I've changed my diff before my manual conversion, so I have no before/after comparison... but even with the automatic transmission there was a noticeable improvement in acceleration/torque. The sweet spot and the real potential of the V12 is between 3k and 6k rpm ... so you you should try to place your rpms there ... There are a few rpm/ratio calculators out there on the web...play a little bit around... and see what difference the 3.54 make ... Concerning the exhaust ... I would suggest you to remove the middle exhaust silencers ...that's a quite cheap mod and gives you probably the most "bang for the bucks" ... Let me know if you have any further questions :-)

    I have got a 1990 with the same conversion running the standard 2.88 diff. It makes it a long legged cruiser. 2000rpm in 5th = 112KPH, or 200 KPH = 3,400rpm. You can always change down for more revs and the torque of the V12 suits this modern car gearing. Also on the open road you can achieve 9-10 L /100 KM (28 to 30 mph) if you can keep your foot of the load pedal!

    @@v12gents I've fitted the kit 10 years ago, as every conversion it hasn't been straight forward. After waiting 3 months for the kit to come, the only technical issue I had was with the pilot bearing not been of the right size for the rest it's a good quality kit, it's now 100 000kms. Generally people, comment on forum when they have a bad experience... The only regret I have, is to have fitted the 500 tko kit instead of 600 tko as the 5th gear ratio with 2.88 diff is too long not good for torque, but great for fuel economy on motorway run (12.5 l/100kms at 140 kms/hours). So all in all I consider my experience with the Drivenman as satisfactory. I also have an E type 3.8 which run with a Getrag 265 and 3.54 diff .

    @Djent 1 This really depends on your technical skills and the chosen route. When you're buying a "kit" and have some decent tools and a proper space it's really doable at home.
