Jaguar X-Type Review - Is it a Mondeo in a dress?

Ойын-сауық

The X-Type is 18 years old. Unpopular with traditional Jaguar fans and a welcome entry into the luxury car market for everyone else. In this video I review my X-Type from my perspective as an owner and tackle the age old question of whether it's just a Mondeo in a dress.

The quickclear windscreen is an absolute godsend in the winter months. I know many Ford drivers who have really appreciated having this feature. Clears the front windscreen in about 30 seconds.

Overall a great review. A couple of corrections worth noting though: 1) The wheelbase is actually shorter on the Jag than on the Mondeo. They may share awd components as well, but it's a specific setup for the Jag and it shows. It's a thoroughly brilliant car to drive - one of the car's best features in fact. 2) The wood is actually real. It's a thin veneer and heavily laminated, but it's real all the same. Cheers ✌

I absolutely love my XType 2.2 se station wagon i have owned it for 10 years on a 57 plate and had no issues until recently when having the front front break discs replaced they warped, so had brembo's fitted and no problems, i do many many long journeys and use cruse control all the time no issues, the heated seats and windows are a god send in the winter, the drive wheels are under the engine so driving in the snow is a breeze, if Jaguar still made this model i would get a bank loan and buy again, i do not like the new Jaguar look over the XType so i will spend what ever it takes to maintain and up keep my Jessica the Jaguar for as long as i can drive a motor car, and the most important part i can fit Ruby and Riley my ageing staffordshire bull terriers in the back when taking them for long walks in the country side. Dr Jake my interior is the same as yours and my Wife loved the look, feel and atmosphere as i do and i can live with 30% or at least my wallet can, great video continue.

I bought a 3.0 Sport manual AWD new in 2001 and I still have it despite having about 5 other cars also during that time. It's such a nice car. As someone else mentioned it's superb in the snow and the 3.0 manual was pretty quick 0-60 in 6.5. The Sports Leather seats were an option on most models I think, and mine has that option. That gets you the split rear folding seats which is essential in my opinion and also the front seats are nice and "huggy" with side support. Mine is fully loaded. I ordered it with almost all of the optional extras. It has been almost totally reliable. I think the only thing I've had fail is the water pump and that was just a leak, it didn't give up and leave me stranded. 110k miles. Nicest car I have ever owned which is why I still have it 20 years later. I've had the suspension lowered/stiffened which has livened it up a lot and I also added a sports exhaust, Bluetooth phone extension and the later Audio Pack which allows you to connect a USB stick, iPhone iPod etc. and an AUX socket. I also bought a thing called "Nav In Jag" which allows you to connect a tablet or whatever to the central screen although I never got round to fitting it! 😂😂 Lastly you and another reviewer say that the screen doesn't do much. I don't understand that comment. The touch screen controls ALL of the car's electronic items like radio, CD changer, tone at least on premium sound (Alpine), climate control, phone as well as satnav. Plus mine has voice control which allows you to give voice commands for all of those functions. This car was well ahead of its time and still stands up today,

I am a Jaguar owner and my very first car I owned in the 70's was a Jaguar. I had a 2002 3ltr AWD X Type for some time and got rid of it quickly. They are more difficult to work on than my 1996 XJ6 X330. Especially the AWD models. The V6 I could have done without as a 4 Cylinder would have been good enough for this small car. Even though the 3ltr model will get you up to 140mph, it is useless because speed limits do not permit me to use this car to it's fullest. I found the 3ltr V6 quite a noisy car under acceleration as the engine is perhaps a little to big for this type and size of car. But then power is a big deal for the "Top Gea"r followers. I would never buy a diesel car for many reasons but all said and done I just love this little car. I have driven many 2.ltr petrol models and I just love them. I have been looking for a 2.1ltr for some time now and will buy the best one that comes along. (Regardless of cost) The 2.1ltr is more practical car because it is not AWD and thus it does not have the problems of a transfer box and the rear drive configuration as it is just front wheel drive. Another good point is that you can actually change all the plugs and coils on the 2.1 without removing the intake manifold etc which you have to do on the 2.5 and 3ltr models. I have tackled a lot of mechanical work on a 3ltr X Type and I can do without a lot of the problems associated the over engineered 2.5 and 3ltr models. Now let's get real here (as Sully once said) If you are buying a future classic Jaguar I don't think you are likely to want to go too fast in a 15 to 20 year old car, especially if you wish to treasure for a long time. Just keeping to the speed limits on a motor way will be enough to keep it healthy. And you will be looking after one the last of the great traditional styled Jaguar cars. And very compact Jaguar to boot. Good luck to all you X Type lovers.

Nice review. I bought a 2.5 Sport AWD in a really nice blue.. black leather interior. Drives as smooth as silk and a joy to take out anywhere. It certainly turns heads and we have traveled many miles in it. I personally own a BMW 330d Touring and when i get back into it i certainly love the raw power the BMW has got but the Jag... I love it and if you want a nice cruise out for the day its certainly the car to use.. BTW my wife is a carer and she uses it daily for her clients and they love it too.. its not that bad on fuel all things considered.

In this colour it looks really nice, the X Type had a certain charm in the right trim level (which yours has). Those diesel engines were definitely carried over from the Mondeo but that's not a bad thing at all - those old Euro 5 lumps are super flexible and have enough usable power for day to day use. However, if neglected they end up sounding like a squirrel having a wank in a biscuit tin. Great video, haven't watched the channel in a while (house renovation, ugh). Keep up the good work! 👍

At 14k it now needs a new clutch kit (the release bearing is noisy) £480 complete. I get 56 mpg motorway driving or 42 mpg urbane and I ain't exactly going slow. Beautiful car to drive and own, my baby. The wood by the way is REAL veneer walnut burr, in a plastic protective coating on an aluminium dash board. And you are right when you say there is a gap in the market for a car like this at the moment. I don’t like the way most cars these days have gone for the ‘minimalist’ design on their interiors- probably following Tesla. I like the wood effect and actually having some plump leather seats, as opposed to the wafer thin seats you get nowadays.

First of all, you're completely wrong by saying that the wooden dashboard is plastic. You will be pleased to know that it's real wood. I know this because I have taken apart X-Type dashes. I've owned 4 X-Types. It's not economical, not the most reliable, not cheap to fix, insurance is expensive at £200 per month (I'm 24, living in London) and it's not the prettiest car ever made either BUT there's just something so magical and special about driving the X-Type and the way it sounds (3.0 petrol is the best), handles and drives. It has a certain charisma and personality. My family made fun of me for driving an old mans' car but they just don't understand the sense of occasion you get every time you get into one of these amazing cars, surrounded by wood, leather and Jaguar logos. Look ahead on the bonnet as you drive and seeing the bonnet ornament increases the quality of the whole experience even more. Ahh, I could go on and on about the X-Type! Never been drawn to any other Jag quite like this one. The cars I've had in between my X-Types (even M-Class Mercedes, BMW X5), have always felt like downgrades.

Mondeo migh not look and be as luxurious, but it's more reliable, and it 'blends' better. If I wanted something to brag I would get a Porsche. But then I would have it for it's actual performance and history not for being surrounded by logos.

Great video, honest and to the point. I drive an immaculate black 2.0 diesel SE on a 59 plate and it's by far the best saloon car I've owned and you'll probably miss yours when it's gone. I much prefer the X Type shape to the newer models and it does pretty much everything the newer and far more expensive Jags do. Besides, I couldn't justify the extra cost for my daily driver when I already have a mid-life crisis supercharged F Type coupe sitting on my driveway next to my prerequisite mid-life crisis younger girlfriend's Audi TT... AND a 50 year old MGB GT in my garage next to a Harley Sportster. Yes, I'm a self confessed petrol head :) X Types are a helluva lot of car for little money if you can find a good one. I bought mine 3 months ago, mint condition, fully loaded, red quilted leather, 62k miles, full service history and only £3000. My only suggestion for you is next time you put your camera on the dashboard, use better stabilization as the vibration made me feel I was having a stroke lol. Or maybe that was just the Jaguar? After that I bought the X-Type 2.1 Petrol, I love this car & it has never let me down in the many years I have now owned it. In contrast to the diesel the petrol engine is so quiet you can barely hear it running! The most expensive repair I have had thus far was a new radiator at just £50.

I had one of these and liked it a lot, upgraded to S type R and now XFS. I would have another one as a runabout but probably an estate and a v6 petrol cos I don't worry about fuel economy and you get awd. The automatic gearbox is very old fashioned so would recommend a manual.

Nice clean car. We have a 2013 Jaguar XJ, with the 8 speed g/box. I would strongly recommend you taking a look at one if you wish to stay with the marque. We bought ours when it was 18 months old, and has been fairly problem free. The biggest issue we have had was the failure of the sat nav during the hot summer, when I think it cooked. We have not yet sorted that. The only other things we have had to do is replace the usual brakes and tyres. It now has 75,000 miles. The car returns 42mpg average from the 3.0 diesel V6. It is a very fast car for the size of a bus ! ..and being aluminium panelled will leave black lines on the road if you plant your foot on the loud pedal, but you need to be careful in the wet when pushing hard... I have had it almost sideways on me when pushing it hard on bend of a fast A road in the wet.

Yep - I live in Spain and bought a 2005 X Type 2 litre diesel 5 years ago. So it was 13 years old but had only 49k kms on the clock - just over 30 k miles - so it was almost new. It even smelt new. Like you, I'd had a Rover 75, which I'd bought because I like the vintage aesthetic - but it was unreliable and felt like anything could go wrong at any moment. I'll probably jinx it - but the X type has been a dream - almost no repairs and puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. Goes plenty fast enough, is amazingly economical on diesel, and just feels more fun to be in than a VW or a Beemer or something of the ilk. Sadly - low emmission zones are becoming a thing in most towns and cities in Spain this year and the cut off point is precisely 2005 for diesels - so it is about to become virtually unusable. Like you I'd be sad to see it go, so instead of selling it for a pittance I might just keep it until it's 30 years old when it officially becomes a historical vehicle, and apparently exempt from the low emmission zone exclusions.

I really like the X type, but I'd have to go for the V6. It just sounds so nice and has the right character. The Sport models are also by far the best trim, they're less like a drinks cabinet and a bit more muscular, but aren't OTT. The diesel is a good engine for the Mondeo. It has loads of grunt and is great for hauling a load of rubble up a hill, overtaking SUVs at 100+, but it's far too gruff for a jag. If you're getting a load of smoke out the back, put some redex in and take it for an italian tune up. Usually sorts it for a while. They tend to coke up if they're just used around town for a while and don't get to stretch their legs.

There are some strange things about this car. About the AWD in particular. After early 2004 the AWD has had some changes to the differential and the car was no longer a proper AWD per se. (this also had some issues eliminated though). However the models thereafter which did not have the DSC traction control (button with sliding car under the gearshift) were simply partially AWD (only on dry pavement) and would spin endlessly if there was no grip ... whereas this defeats the AWD purpose - if one wheel spins - the rest grip and you move...

I really love the X-Type and was looking for one, despite being somewhat put off by serious rust issues. Then a lovely FSH 2 owner 2003 aluminium XJ caught my eye, for which I only paid £1450, as it's MOT expired whilst sat after being part exchanged. Beautiful and wont rust in the conventional sense, but bigger than I really wanted. Diesel isn't an option for me, as I live a few hundred yards from where London's ULEZ will soon be expanded to. Only diesels Euro 6 on, will escape that until the goal posts are moved again.

@@DrJakesVeryBritishReviews Dream no more, as depreciation has seen prices hit rock bottom. I only do around 3000 miles a year, so mpg isn't the huge issue to me, that it might for others. Being aluminium, it isn't much heavier than the X type, despite it's size, so the 3 litre V6 is more than enough. The V6 2.7 diesels are apparently a little quicker despite less power as more low down torque and great economy. But with London's ULEZ and Bristol soon banning diesels altogether, will be the end for many of those.

Emerald Fire Green is most likely the official colour but to anyone else who maybe isn't in the know I would say that it was like a British Racing Green in colour but a very acceptable shade of green for a car. If it is indeed a diesel it will more than likely have a Ford TDCi engine in it which were incredibly popular when they came out, only really ranked 2nd behind the BMW diesel engines. A great piece of work by Ford who worked in conjunction with Peugeot & Citroen to perfect their diesel engines. I know of many people who have owned a Ford TDCi and absolutely loved it.

Before watching the rest of the video (after you mentioned faults) I'm going to predict what has gone wrong: Rear suspension mounts rusted and needed replacing EGR - Either clogged or a torn hose Auxiliary Tensioner Sill rust POSSIBLY (although this does look like a very tidy example, what goes on under the side sills can be VERY problematic) Rear parking sensors - Either stopped working or got 'touchy' Clogged valves on the turbo Oil/Water Thermostat 3 out of 7 confirmed in the video - Maybe 4 based on your smoke cloud comments and the EGR - Not bad :D - I actually blanked mine off as soon as I got it and later completely removed the system. Gave me another 5-10bhp and made the car run a lot smoother/cleaner. EGRs were a terrible idea. X-Type owner for 3 years :D - 148k miles on a 2.0D and still happily running, but like you, not without a few little niggles. In all seriousness, how much do you think you'd want for it?
