On eBay there is a drive socket with a tapered wedge for opening up the gap holding the bottom joint

Yes, trouble is hammering it in. The VAG hub expander tool bolts are really what's needed, but getting the right size for these has proved fruitless. Got it off today with another method.. I'll explain in the next video:-)

When I did my top mounts only , I only removed the tie rod end, ball joint , drop link, hammerd the top of the hub to slide the hub down off the lower shock absorber.

Thanks, maybe that would have been the easier way to go

Using a long pole bar placing it between the driveshaft and wishbone levering it down fully to try and separate the hub from the shock absorber making sure you have plenty of clearance with the ground / floor as the wishbone can only move soo much down. You'll need to place the steering on full lock so that the tie rod is facing fully outwards. Placing the long bar under the chassis floor for leverage , this will allow the hub to clear the ball joint. Try not to pull the hub towards you due to inner drive shaft may pop out stretching the cv boot.

@@Fixiturself thanks, really appreciate the detailed help, hopefully I will master this pig of a thing. Always worked on vag cars so this is new to me ;)

That is turninig into a proper sod of a job I admire your patience. It's hard to see where it's jamming. I really thought you had it when you jacked up the hub. Anyway I wish you luck and look forward to seeing the finish.

Thanks my friend, evaluated why this ball joint was getting stuck, will reveal in upcoming video, hasten to say no information on my method online so should be interesting as it was relatively easy in the end! Haven't done the spring yet. I did my back in badly on this job (couldn't move for 3days, serious meds etc), so laid up and now on light duties since until my strength returns :-).

Sorry to hear about your back mate. Believe me I know what it's like. Take a well earned rest and ask Aunty Mildred if she has any old school remedies.@@HatBoyHarvey

@@paullandells4107 thanks Paul, it's been really bad this time, worse than ever. I've been laid up for 4 days, hardly able to move, doc called and meds taken. I'm up and about now and taking it very easy. Unfortunately I can't do much tinkering with cars, hence only an old archive short this week :-( looking to maybe compile some old video on the fabia, but not sure what yet :-/

When I did this on my 2.5 V6 X Type I took off the wishbone which made it so much easier to take apart the rest. It was not necessary to disconnect the drive shaft or the steering rod end. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2ijk8axgrOWlps.html

Yes you can do it by just taking the strut out, but although I initially had problems with the ball joint it worked out my method worked well in the end as I needed to replace the wishbone and CV rubber boot. Watched your video and liked your persistence in getting those bolts out, Those wretched bolts! thanks for sharing that, These Jags are great cars, but mines rusting underneath on the sills badly and it seams to be made of some metal akin to tissue paper in parts! :-)
