It was actually Harry Belafonte who told Eartha Kitt that he cared about her deeply, but dating her could not advance his career. I do know that Poitier defended Dorothy Dandridge against director Otto Preminger (whom she was dating) who was always verbally abusive towards her. I also do know that Poitier gave Malcolm X's family financial support for years (among many others) after his death.
