i live in HK where we have more electric cars than any country in the world per capita. I have a Tesla P100D i drive in and out of China, it’s one year old and falling apart, pieces of trim are falling off inside and it’s been back to the garage continually for over heating problems. The technology is brilliant the execution leaves much to be desired. i have driven the i pace it is much more refined than the Tesla, i’m happy to give up the extra performance you can’t use in the Tesla for the quality and finish of the jaguar.

I have owned two Jags over the years. Both in the XJ family. OK, so I bought them used, but they were ostensibly in "good condition". Both gave me endless problems - nothing really major, but enough to get rid of them within 2 years of buying them. After the second one was as bad as the first, I decided never to buy another Jag. ALL marques produce the occasional "lemon", and Tesla is no exception. Would I buy this iPace? Definitely not... it lacks the advanced technology and electronics now evident in the Model-3 (by way of example), which is in practically all respects a far more advanced car, and (with FSD and the Tesla Network on the visible horizon), it likely to appreciate in value in years to come. Drive this Jag off the showroom floor and it depreciates instantly by 15%. Like all traditional automakers, Jag cannot (yet) make these at a profit... so there's a good possibility (after reporting a £2bn LOSS in 2018) that this iPace may just be a flash in the pan, and in 5 to 6 years from now, the only Jags you will see will be in dusty motor museums.

Hi Petro Ped, your I-Pace review video is probably the BEST one on the Internet right now. Well balanced first impression video. I have recently ordered an I-pace and would like to share my reasons to choose it over a Model X: 1) Warranty and after sales service: I-Pace 5 years bumper to bumper, 8 years battery and drive unit. Tesla 4 years and 8 years. I-Pace comes with FREE 5 years annual services and road assist. Tesla has NO free annual service and 4 yaers road assisit. Jaguar has 46 dealerships around Australia. Everyone is equipped to repair and service the I-Pace. Tesla has 4 service centres. The next Jaguar service is just 10 mins away from me. The next Tesla service is 70 mins away. (Gold Coast, Australia) 2) Price: I-Pace starts at $133k. Model S starts at $145K and Model X starts at $153k 3)Off Roading: I-Pace can go off road, climb hills, drive on the beach, in the desert etc. Fully covered by factory warranty. Tesla voids your warranty in the moment you leave the tarmac. Australia has many beautiful places that a Model X can not go just due to warranty issues. 4)Performance: I-Pace 0-100 in 4.5Sec. Same spec for ALL versions. Tesla Model X Long Range does it in 4.9 Sec. More importantly, you can go full throttle with the I-Pace every time and any time. If you do that to the Model X, you will hear a groaning noise from the front suspension. Do it again and again, your front suspension will suffer big time. So no tracking for Model X any time soon. 5)Charging: The I-Pace can be charged at ALL charging stations except Tesla Superchargers. This also includes all Tesla Destination Chargers. I tested 15 destination chargers around my town and almost every one works without adapter. For those that do not work, there is a cheap locally made adapter called TeslAnything. In the next 2 years, 80% of new public DC Fast Chargers will be on CCS2 Combo standard. ALL current Teslas on sale in Australia will NOT be able to charge from those stations. If they are lucky, they will be using chademo adapters to charge from them. They are limited to 50 KW only. ALL major Australian car dealerships will have their own DC fast Charger installed at their dealership soon. None of them will be having chademo, only CCS2. 6)quality: This one is well known so I won't go into details. Workmanship and component quality of the I-Pace is a magnitude better than any Teslas I have seen and driven in person.

Very nice review. The SE with the 20” is the one we have ordered. I agree with the Tesla fan base that the charging network of Tesla is way better. I live in the Netherlands. There are alot of public charges available. Only long trips will requier planning.

Wow, what a wonderful review and car. I have been looking forward to this all electric Jaguar coming out for ages, I know that I would suffer from range anxiety big time at the moment but I think that the infrastructure will move on very quickly and there will be a lot more charging stations popping up everywhere. Simon You should carry out an *honest* mileage audit. Just note each journey mileage for 2 months.that will tell you if you *actually* need the range. Recent (UK) studies actually showed over 90% of journeys are well within the range of most EV's.

Hi and thanks for your reply, i am waiting for Jaguar to finish the android app to do just that. They have one up and running for apple phones to assess the savings that you would have on your car journeys, i am sure i would save a lot as i have solar panels on my roof as well.

Ped. I picked one up. Jag had a campaign with a free pod point charger. We still have our C200d for long motorway journeys a few times a month. It’s a HSE with air ride suspension. Can’t complain. So happy with it. It’s had all the updates so infotainment is not too slow. Mostly use apple car play anyway. Light regen is a must as the brake pedal can be mushy and unresponsive at first when pressed a few inches. Love your review though.

Ah, but will it keep up with my Kona Electric 64kwh lol!!!! Great review as always, keep them coming.

Lovely looking car, great to see Jag getting into EV...but. Try get it through a 6 6 restriction...also take in to consideration the turning circle of just under 12m

The re Gen is the same feeling as the exhaust brakes on the trucks. The BMW hybrid we had a for a couple of days was very weird like you say. It was astonishing on its pick up.

Lovely looking car, had a look at one this morning whilst dropping my car off for a service and MOT. Unfortunately still outside my price range. Have also heard elsewhere that there is quite a wait to get one as Jaguar had no previous sales numbers and the demand has outstripped the numbers being built . Still I suppose as demand increases prices may start being more realistic for the majority of people.

Great review! I have a First Edition on order. Ordered it on launch day, expecting handover on Boxing Day, so they definitely sold well! I managed a test drive finally a couple of weeks ago, and was blown away by it. I see a lot of "never replace a V8" comments, but as a real petrol head myself (my last car was a 5.5 litre V8), I'd just say that you need to drive it to get it. Jag have done an amazing job, and I can't wait for Christmas!

Great review. Thanks! The i-Pace is the kind of vehicle that will sway more and more ICE drivers over to the electric propulsion world. It looks great, has some badge snobbery to justify it's high price and, with that kind of torque and ride quality, it performs the way a car-loving person would want. I've driven a friend's Model S P100D and it's ludicrous mode was eye-popping. But it's massive weight concerned me as to how it would perform in icy conditions when it's mass would work against it when slowing down. All that torque absolutely destroys tires-something the general driving public doesn't think about until it too late, like when they hit a wet or icy patch and go flying. The regen braking was so intuitive I found it very easy to get used to and the silence made it incredibly easy to concentrate on my driving lines. EVs are the future and it's just around the corner. They just so silent most people can't hear them coming yet.

Yep, I drove the Tesla Model 3 and I hated its regenerative braking and ugly minimalistic interior with my desktop pc monitor as its center console and geezer light oak dashboard. On the other hand, I test drove the Jaguar iPace and the interior is beautiful and guess what, it looks like a car interior! I would buy the Jaguar, the ride is also nicer (not bumpy firm like the Tesla).

Congratulation on your I-Pace. Bought one myself last November, already has 7300 km on the odo, done a long trip to Germany and so far love it.

Just picked up the Ipace today 21 inch wheels with kevlar inserts looks like a bat mobile, went for upgraded metalic glitter paint, would have preferred a bigger space as traded in my old 2006 ml320, feels like something out of the Tron movie 😎 hoping the UK charge network keeps getting better 🤞wasn't sheap at £87k but get the hmrc tax right off against my company profits 🏆

Another great review 👍 I’ve really been toying with the idea of getting an EV and this has now become a contender - I suppose the worry is that technology is moving at such a pace (no pun intended 😜) that I worry it’ll be out of date the minute I take delivery... not to mention freefall residuals -I guess leasing is the way to go.

I'm curious about the "out of date" claims. The car will still function as a car, even if something better comes along. If you only need 100 miles of range and it comes with 200, does having 300 make it better? The only cars that I have seen with free fall residuals have been the short range EV's, under 100 miles of range. At least in the USA, the Tesla's have held their values remarkably well, and better than most ICE models.

Red Baron interesting point re the Tesla residuals, I think most Americans have a really strong patriotic streak (which is to be admired) and want Tesla to thrive (and of course the product is market leading) so demand will be strong and as they are rare in the uk, residuals will be strong. But if you look at an early BMW i3 - they have taken a huge hit. I guess its the unknown of how long the battery life will be, how the battery degradation will affect range etc. You make a good point about range though, if you do need only 100 miles of range, then an early ev could be viewed as a bargain - especially if you live in a city with punitive emission charges. I’m still not sure ....

All early EV's with short range took a huge hit. Long range EV's haven't taken any hits yet, but then again, Tesla has been the only game in town, except for the Bolt which arrived around a year ago. The i3 is a short range EV, so no surprises really there. I don't think Tesla value has to do with a patriotic streak, as much as maybe scarcity. There has simply been sustained demand for used Tesla's that as so far exceeded the used market. Battery life in Tesla's has actually been excellent so far, and is forecast to stay that way, as seen here: teslarati.com/tesla-battery-life-80-percent-capacity-840km-1-million-km/ On average, it appears that Tesla's lose around 1% annually or every 25,000 miles or so. We don't have punitive emissions charges in the USA, so that has not been a factor so far either. Cars are not taxed based on emissions like in Europe over here, so except for a one time purchase tax credit, there are no ongoing incentives to speak of.

Sasquatch 2001 No, the way to use ABRP is to let it calculate your route with charging stop and then to export the route to Google Maps or Apple Maps (if you are an iPhone user). That way to can use CarPlay or Android Auto

Pre empting the road is what makes the difference to the brakes as ya know, that’s exactly how we drive the big rigs economically.

Great review Pete. To be honest the range on the Jag would worry me on a long journey especially as there are so few truly rapid chargers about that aren't Tesla branded. At the moment my V90 gives me all the day to day I need on electric only but allows longer journeys, especially the trips to the south of France without worrying. Sort the charging thing out though and it becomes a totally different ball game.

Public chargers in you country,

2nd time of watching but when you show the cables that come with the car why is the 1st cable yellow on the car end and black on the other end?

Until your warranty runs out. In Jaguar’s own words... “Critical updates will be pushed via SOTA after the Warranty has expired. Optional updates will only be delivered during the Warranty period. This is the same as other non SOTA vehicle lines” SOTA is Jaguar’s term for Over the Air Updates.

I brought an e pace r dynamic se and starting to think i made the wrong choice. Hmmm, I mean the E pace is great but that's the future of the automotive industry

Just changed from an S4 Avant to an I-Pace HSE. Still have the S4 for a little while and when you drive them back to back the S4 feels gutless. The I-Pace feel so much more responsive with truly monstrous torque available at any speed. I’ll still miss the S4 though.

An excellent review... For me it`s the first time i have not felt the need to doze off while watching anything to do with an EV, it`s certainly a looker and i do quite like the sound it makes, but at 70k! we are still a few years away before these sort of vehicles become an affordable alternative to tempt the majority of new car buyers away from the excellent petrol/diesel cars we already have....Then you will be needing a new name....EV Ped?

Have this car ( owned for just under a year) and in general very happy with it . Best I have managed in all electric mode is 36 miles. My general runs are either around town which I do in all electric mode or round trips of just over 100 miles mpg averages between 76 and 84 mpg ( depending upon weather, the colder the weather the less all electric range). Charge the car overnight using Economy 7.

Both Jaguar and Tesla use a G-Sensor for the brake lights. So, if your regen is slowing your car beyond a certain value, like .1G's, the brake lights will turn on automatically.

Hi Ped Interesting review and food for thought in certain areas. Styling wise have to disagree with you, I hate the back end. Interior looks good however. Driving experience sounds promising, and as you say going to have change some perceptions. At present I could not be tempted to change from my SQ5, why, I need to tow, and the dreaded diesel fits the bill. Coming down to Goodwood with a triple axle trailer with 2 vintage cars, 310 miles in a day and 27.4 mpg. I rest my case.

sorry for asking silly question ,just a novice getting interested in purchasing a ev does the car has neutral or not my context is like ,sometimes on downslide of mountain journey it was easy to save fuel while going down by keeping car in neutral can we take advantage of something like that in it

In an EV when you lift off you get even better than running in neutral, you get regenerative braking so you put some charge back into the battery pack 👍

Noticed the rear window blind spot is pretty bad 🙈

Love the opinion, and it does look great. My only concern would be like you if you got caught short for charging. Yes plan ahead but when you get to the charging station you've chosen what if there are 3/4 cars in the same boat. Just not figured that one out yet.

That's where Tesla do things really well. Their Sat Nav not only tells you where the nearest charge station is but also how many chargers there are and how many are being used. A brilliant feature :-)

If Tesla had not shaken up the old industry, this car would not have been developed

Dude, the first modern and viable all electric car was actually the Nissan Leaf, not Tesla, T came much later. The old industry is not shaken up either, most cars by a wide margin are still combustion.The other carmakers will come back with a vengeance soon and then good night Tesla with their crappy quality!

I thank Tesla, like the Model 3, had one on order, test drove the I-Pace, love at first sight, it sits up off the ground and drives wonderfully. In California, with Federal government tax rebate and dealer incentives and discounts, my new I-Pace cost me about the same as a Tesla Model 3 Performance. Yes, without Tesla this car would not have been made!

Glad Jaguar has produced this car so I don't have to buy a Tesla. Lots of jaguar dealers and very few Tesla. Thanks for sharing your experience.

No mention of the recalls and battery fires. Have they stopped using the LG cells. I would like to see one driven hard around the track until it stops just to see how it handles the heat.

Saw this car a couple of months ago.. a guy not far from here apparently trains mechanics from all over on this vehicle.. ;) in Sweden.

I'm not ready to jump into the electric wagon as of yet. If it was possible for someone to make a request to Jaguar I would ask for this body shape given the Turbo four Engine in the F-type and turn this into the ultimate hot hatch. IT is beautiful. It is a really beautiful car.

Paul with most EV its one petal driving but some makers make you use a separate paddle or button you press to get Regen braking. YES, the brake lights come on when Regen braking. in fact the TESLA shows brakelighs activating on the BIG Tesla screen.

Which is kinda interesting, as the longer range and larger Model S 75D has air suspension standard, while it is cheaper than the Jaguar.

A good review - I have never owned a Jag (always felt they are a bit "old man's car") but I am seriously looking at an EV to replace my Audi Q5 and this for me shifts the brand entirely. I took a test drive last week and was very impressed, taking it on motorway, town and country lanes. I am now about to make a decision on whether to go for this or not. The drive was superb and for me was a better overall drive than the Tesla Model X.

I drove an i-pace yesterday and was very impressed, I think Jaguar have got a winner with this motor pity its not built in Britain but you cant have everything.

For longer journeys in the UK, 90%+ of motorway services have a charger for the Jag.

Great review very infrormative. Torn between this and a tesla but you may have just tipped tye balance . Only single thing i would pick you up on was the 13 quid a charge vs a whole tank at 70 odd pounds as the range of charge is far less than a equivalent tank of fuel . You did look sexy in the car though . 0 to 60 in 4.1 was highly impressive and the interior was juicy . Something satisfying about charging the car up and certainly futuristic thats for sure . I also think the roof was a must at under 1k . Yes i do like it . I think one would have to be carefull not to get carried away with the extra options though. At say 130 quid for 2000 miles and in turn 1300 for 20000 and 13000 for 200k its really a no brainer compared to petrol at lets say 40mpg mixed so what 6 pounds per gallon 60 pounds for 400 600 for 4000 . 6000 for 40000 and then 30k pounds for 200k miles so there you have a 27k saving already and thats not accounting for petrol going up then factor in congestion charge and tax and although a bigger outlay in the long run its really not so bad then yes the grant . Maintenance is less i hear also . I must ask though as i drove a few myself . Do you find them lets say diffrent handling wise ? I did in a mix between a sort of go cart and a computer game but in a rather pleasent way really

For a car that size you are talking 24MPG with mostly highway driving. My Chevy Spark (tiny, low drag) gets 33MPG mixed. I drove a Kia Sorrento 40 miles on the highway and maybe 10 in the city and it used half a tank of gas! On the other hand, in the city, EVs get crazy good range... EV maintenance is brakes around 100,000 miles, tires, and cabin air filter changes and I think that is about it. Gas cars I think you spend an average of $1000 per year in maintenance (smaller most years, larger a few times = the average) If I remember the numbers correctly.

That is a challenge for sure. I must say it is also one of the things Tesla do really well, as you can see in the car sat nav where the charging station are and also how many stations are in use :-)

I love the Jaguar, and the only thing that stops me from converting from my Model X to a Jaguar, or any other EV, is the idea of not having access to the Tesla Superchargers. I just can't stand the thought of having different subscriptions and membership cards. In a Tesla you just need to put in your destination, and the car tells you where you need to stop and charge (for free).

Petrol Ped If you bought an X or S in the past, you got free supercharging for life. If you used someone's referral code when you bought your car, you would have gotten free supercharging for life as well. The model 3 non-performance version does not have free supercharging, but Tesla is only charging you basically local electricity rates, so you're still going to save a lot of money over gas. This is one place where I think Porsche is screwing up. They've said that they want to make an EV fillup at one of their special fast chargers cost as much as a tank of gasoline - that's insane.

Every Model S and X sold until 2017 automatically gets free supercharging for life, and all after that get the charging for free with a code. They are making some changes in late 2018 for cars going forward, I haven't seen the details ironed out yet, but no cars with previous Supercharging for life are affected.

I have an SE on order due next March and I agree with everything said in your report from my test ride, it is very exciting to drive The only thing from the pictures in the report showed 100% charged with circa 240 miles as Jaguar state 292 I accept that 292 might not be achieved due to circumstances but I would have expected 100% = 292 as a display £66k after the government grant is a lot of dosh, but I have to stop myself thinking I am not worthy of the outlay so long as it does not break the bank

You will be lucky to get 180 on the highway if your doing 70mph. Ipace is extremely inefficient. Its less efficient than the model x which is much larger (space 1650 liter vs 2500 liter, weight 2133kg vs 2500kg).

Yeah, real life tests with a full battery, like Bjorn Nyland did, the range is only between 200 and 220 miles real world. No one will ever get anything close to 292. Real life, expect 230 best case scenario. I have seen multiple real life range tests so far, and everyone so far is getting between 230W to 250W per Km, or around 370W per mile or more. Since the usable capacity has been measured at around 81kWh, real life range is very close to 220 miles. So, if someone is expecting anything close to 300 miles of real life range, they will be pretty disappointed. Bjorn Nyland's tests were done at around 56Mph or 90KMh, so not exactly high speed driving. Probably means sub 200 mile range in the USA where the speed limit is normally 70Mph or 112KMh.

So many directions they could take this. Imagine a low two seat sports car with low frontal area and drag coefficient. Two motors, one for each of the rear wheels, allowing instant torque control with no diff. Double wishbonds all round. Bit like the original Tesla I suppose but design and tech has moved on a bit since then. Or a jacked up no compromise electric defender offroader. Massive wading depth due to no air inlet or exhaust. Massive torque. Maybe a smaller motor for each wheel.

I own a Jaguar and this the only car made to date I would swap it for. Love the idea of an electric car and as you say you just have to reboot you petrol head and plan you journeys and for me the longer runs always have a lunch break in them any way. Sadly Im in the same position you where with the Tesla in that its just to expensive but I would love one. Thanks for this video

It would be a competitor if not for the lackluster range. A Model S 75D, which is larger, faster, quicker, more efficient and with a longer range is also cheaper, and it has air suspension standard. It can also charge faster at home (7.5 hours instead of 13.5 hours), and faster on the road, 120kW vs Jaguar is currently maxed out at 80kW, with a far larger charging network. So, although I think the Jaguar is a compelling car in many ways, it does not really compare favorably to Tesla in almost every category.

I believe that there's an extended range version coming out soon too; up to 320 miles on a charge....or over 400 kms. It's simply devilishly delicious looking!

Unless they are finding totally different batteries somewhere, there is no more room for a longer range. Based on current efficiency of around 370W per mile, they would need a battery pack of 120kWh with zero weight penalty. There are zero chances that capacity as available for this car in the next 5 years, if not 10.

Does the regen show brake lights?

Jag's temp stopping of production due to battery shortage does vindicate Tesla's decision to build a dedicated battery factory. They were mocked for doing so by legacy makers but it clearly makes sense. Investing in charging network is also paying off in spades.

Hi Pete, Thanks for this excellent review. I have to say that I am already planning my next vehicle, having only just taken delivery of my current one, back in July 2018, my last 3 ltr desiel. I have made the decision to purchase an EV, but not until the range is at least 300 miles (400 would be better). I do accept your recommendations on the subject of route planning and to this end I am already doing this as a precursor to going EV in the future. It is somewhat of a chore at present, but I am sure the availability of charging points will improve quite quickly.

+Stewart UK The Tesla 100D has a range of 331 miles EPA but these cars are expensive. The cheaper Model 3 with the long range battery (the only type they currently make) has a range of 310 miles but is only available in the US at present.

the model 3 is going to be at least £40-45k for the basic trim when it hits our shores....plus i'd worry with aftersale care....not too many tesla dealerships about..... but if you drive more than 200 miles in one go, then, really, for safety sake, you should have a half hour break- perfect to top of the battery whilst you are fetching and drinking your coffee....

+Peter Kirton Carrying a full load of passengers has surprisingly little affect on range or even acceleration because long rang electric cars (if 170 miles can be considered long range) are already heavy, a few extra 80kg weights makes hardly any difference. The unladen weight of the i-pace is 2.133 tonnes (2,133kg).

Great review and nice looking car. One thing though, you had no review on ‘fuel’ economy ? Most car reviews do talk about how fuel efficient a car is. The iPace alas is very ‘fuel’ inefficient which is a shame (for an EV). How much energy you use = your range = recharging. Jag have designed a great car but with a large battery like that, it’s too heavy which means it’s very inefficient for an EV, when compared to other EVs.

Yeah, so far it appears the efficiency is very low compared to at least the Tesla's. The I-Pace is less efficient per mile than all 3 Tesla models, the X, S and the 3. Unfortunately this shows up in the poor range numbers also. A Tesla Model S 75D, which is larger than the I-Pace, actually has a longer range (249 miles), with a battery that is supposedly 20% smaller. There really is no excuse for the I-Pace to struggle to break 220 miles real life with a 90kWh battery, especially since a larger Model S 90D can reach close to 300 miles with that battery.

Worth noting that as a demonstrator every person who gets in it puts the pedal to the metal. The predicted full charge range is therefore lower. In the real world a range of over 250 miles is realistic.

It should be noted that a standard Tesla Model S 75d is £68, 000 Plus the paint colour, premium interior pack and similar wheels to the Jag, (already has the sunroof) brings the Tesla to almost exactly the same price as the Jag spec you have. (without the government discount) However you do get the 300 mile range. PLUS, I believe that if you acquire a referral code from a current owner, (easily done) you can still get FREE supercharging for one year after purchase (!) NOTE! IF you did normally fill up at home (£13.) "Every night".... but used free supercharging instead, that would save you approximately £4, 700 over the year!

Thanks for the info. V interesting. The £13 per night was assuming you use your entire battery every day. Otherwise it will only charge what is required to 'fill' the battery.

@@PetrolPed all the EVs here come with just the 110 volt you take but it looks like having that second cable saves the companies installing the chargers a ton of money as they don't have to pay for that to be installed. Makes so much sense!

In the future, the I-Pace will support 100kW DC Fast Charging. Right now it only supports half of this at 50kW. Contrast this charging time with the Tesla Supercharger network. Also you didn't try out any of the driving assistance functions and that's too bad because they fall short of expectations at this price level imho. That said It looks good and goes like hell so if that floats your boat and you have some cash to throw around it's a great buy i guess.

If the tests so far are any indication, the I-Pace currently maxes out at 80kW of charging. It appears to be due to the 200A current limit (200A at 400V). This may change in the future, but regardless of if you have a 100kW or 150kW charger, the max is 80kW so far. That doesn't change the fact however that most fast chargers for the I-Pace out there are only 50kW, and many will not even reach the max 50kW.
