Jaguar Electric Windows - Fixing slow electric windows (Part 1)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A common issue on older Jaguars is very slow electric windows. Usually the problem is not with the motor or mechanism but with the switches. In this video I show how to take the switches appart, clean them up and get them working again.

I do not know why are you so surprised about the sucess of your channel. There are not that many classic Jaguar passionates in this world, and when we meet someone who is, the bond is kind of natural. If we add the factor that you generously sacrifice your time to help us with extremely useful advice on how to keep our jewels in good shape at a reasonable cost, I foresee more and more Jaguar enthusiats joining your channel. Nice people attract nice people!!

What i like most about this channel is that the creator shows each and every step. Never rushed but thorough in his procedure. Who would ever think that a slow moving power window would be the cause of a dirty corroded switch? Awesome content!

Cool that was really helpful, I've just recently bought a 1981 XJ6 series 3 and have been playing with the electric windows. I'll definitely have a go at cleaning all the switches out just for peace of mind. As some are slow and the rear drivers side doesn't even work. Yes this is definitely a channel to subscribe to. Well done! I have only got 35 subscribers so your far out passing me.

You are a God send for my Xj-6, my Wife's Xj-6, my Son's XJ-6, and my Daughter's XJ-6. All are mid 80's models. All were bargain cars which we drive everyday. I just picked up a 1985 XJS and I am working on this car. I am a retired publisher (we produced Braille books). Anyway we have always been a Jaguar family. Really liked to buy Jags that needed love and we love Jags. I want to thank you again, and my family wants to thank you. You are an outstanding teacher. If you could --a video on how to service the XJS 5/3 cooling system. It is really complicated. Thanks again and God bless. Chris

Hi Adam, after replacing the electrical antenna of my xj 12 S3, which is a difficult job when having no proper instruction , i also cleaned my switches. All windows working fine, except the one at the drivers seat. I would appreciate another video dealing with the electric windows. Great work you have done so far. Before seeing your video i did not touch my xj. Compared to my TR 4 it is a challange. Best Regards and looking forward to further videos. Dieter

1982 XJ6 Series 3 - I just hooked up a battery and started testing electricals. Both rear windows power up/down but slowly. Front windows inoperative, so I will be testing switches and door motors/mechanisms. I see that part 2 of this video was never done? That would seem to be the most complex portion of this repair - getting into the doors and fixing things that you can't see by just pulling panels off.

Thank you once again, of all of my years of countless Jaguar ownership, I don't think I have had a single car with a complete set of working windows, I assumed the motors were knackered, perhaps not. My current car needs to be revved very hard to get window to lift, it comes down okay, but closing is difficult, I generally only open rear windows 🤣

I hardly open the windows on my new S-type since I know how easily the mechanism breaks on the early S-types, the gears are made of very fragile plastic. The previous owner has had a few replaced and I've seen what they cost from the bills 😂

Owning a 2/68 E Type for 36 years, I've worked on just about everything. I recently removed & replaced all 10 rocker switches on my panel. Being a 2/68 transition car between S1 & S2 there are no 100% electrical schematics. Let's say one switch that came out had 4 spade connectors while the replacement switch for that function had 6 spade connectors. Using an ohm meter, I had to "map" each connector with the switch in multi positions. A lot of work but got all the new switches installed & working...it was not plug & play.

Hi Adam, how pertinent! I’ve had trouble with the windows on the XJS but I’m not sure in may case at least, it’s to do with the switches though. I have been told what the problem could be, but don’t worry won’t run a spoiler. It will have to wait anyway until I’ve completed the engine refit. BTW, if you’ve not covered it already, can you let me know the correct way of wiring the FenAir system into the car please.

Much better way: 1) disassemble as shown 2) clean with dish soap (Dawn in the US is a very good grease solvent) us a brush and don't be shy it's a robust switch 3) soak the whole thing in vinegar or CLR or similar product to remove tarnish 4) reassemble by using grease SPARINGLY not like his globby mess! Use dielectric grease to prevent oxidation of the contact surfaces.

I need some help with my 1983 XJS, I found a little wiring harness with 3 plugs on it, 2 are taped off and one wasn't plugged in and I can't find where it goes. The main plug is by the fuel injector harness plug. I believe this is part of the reason my Jag won't idle unless I hold the pedal a bit.
