At the end Jacques Brel shows the place where he writes his songs, Usually standing like Victor Hugo. Then he explains how the songs come to him, a long process that can take months. "one evening when we are tired we have an idea and this idea we let it ripen then we leaf it like a fruit" and at the end he wants to listen to a song in gestation "the monkeys"

Hello Dereck! Thank you for this great song! Here’s what Jacques Brel says at the end of the video: "Maybe it’s time I took you to my house. Here it is, on the fifth floor with no elevator. Well, here’s my desk. That’s where I write my songs. Victor Hugo also wrote standing up. Not songs, poems. The only reason I bring that to your attention is that there are illustrious elders. When I say I write songs there, that’s not true. In reality, a song is quite an adventure, a long adventure. One evening, we are very tired, we have an idea. A precise idea but not complete. So this idea goes around you for weeks, months, four, five or six months and it matures, and one day, when it’s ripe, like fruit, you take the idea, a pen and a piece of paper, you write a song there. If you want, I can show you what happens to a song that’s being made. It’s three or four months old. It’s not over at all. It’s called "The Monkeys," and it’s kind of mean." Thank you for sharing such beautiful songs!

There is a lot of wordplays in it : "La valse à 20 temps" (Waltz at 20 beats) sounds like "La valse à 20ans" (Waltz at 20 years old), and "La valse à 1000 temps" (Waltz at 1000 beats) sounds like "La valse à mis le temps." (Waltz took her time) and more…

Very "elaborated" song, including in its lyrics some puns and cumulation of meaning, relevantely associated with the increasing and heady rythm. Brilliant song producing as well, some very nice images thanks to semiotic skills used for the most obvious application (artistic) of some tricks like "The langage of the birds".

The interview part has Jacques talking about his songwriting process. The stand he shows is where he wrote. He said he liked writing standing up like Victor Hugo. Although he adds writing a song doesn't start at his desk. Usually, he gets ideas late in the evening when he's tired. He lets the idea mature in his head for several months before he starts writing it down.

The instrument you hear is not a flute, but a barrel organ. It's a mechanical instrument that works like an organ, however it is not played by an organist but by a person turning a crank. The melody is encoded on a wooden cylinder, and it works a bit like the old mechanical pianos.

There is a parody of this song by the comedian Jean Poiret "La Vache à Mille Francs". It's nearly as old as the og. He talks about the fact that consumers pays so much for a little piece of meat, but the farmer who raised the cow is payed so poorly. And he asks where does the money go. @@mariepelletier1784 I think you need to calm down a bit and relax... Brel had maybe some difficulties at the beginning in Belgium, but after that he was very successful in his country, and did plenty of concerts there. and the first Belgian king was Leopold Ier, aka Leopold de Saxe-Cobourg Gotha, who was a German prince... Louis d'Orleans was a candidate, but his father, the king Louis-Philippe Ier, refused to avoid any risk of war, you're probably mixing with that. We definitely don't have all French names, my own name is a derivative of a word in an old local language, and many Belgian names come from the Flemish too. HE's the one who says it, also his daughter and his wife. Who are you to question that? Nobody. We also have many proofs in France you know...You can even hear him talking about it in videos. You are on youtube dude, use it wisely... Like all Belgians, you would like to rewrite history, but you can't, it's too late. It's already written. As for your king, ask yourself why he has French royal blood from Orleans, directly descended from Louis XIV and not from SaxonyS. I didn't say that all Belgians had a French name. I even specify that I am not talking about the non speaking french belgium. I'm talking about the Walloons. Moreover, in 1830, all of Belgium spoke French and not Dutch. You can't rewrite that either. Most of those with a French name come from Picardy, France. But back to Brel. No one says he wasn't Belgian but that it was only France that made him a star, not Belgium who rejected him according to HIS own words. Even his films are only French movies. You want to rewrite history but you fell very badly there. It is not because I contradict you in your stupidity and your ignorance that I am not calm. Your mega ego is in question, not the reality of the facts. Belgium receives France television, which is a group of public channels in France, paid for by the French taxpayer, not by you. You also receive private channels and it's every time because the Belgians demand it. And yes, when you take yourself too seriously it ends badly. You can't argue about french fries because it's authenticated French. France is 2000 years old, unlike you. We have a lot of documentation. You're supposed to be a French speaker, but you haven't said a single word of French. As usual, the mythomaniacs well-known belgians. Don't try to rewrite history, it's too late for Brel. Belgium did not want to hear anything from Brel. Then he went to Paris, lived in Montmartre, and THERE they gave him a chance! NOT in Belgium! France made him a star! Also, the first Belgian king was an Orléans, from the branch of the brothers of Louis XIV, therefore of Louis XVI. Belgians all watch French television, speak exactly like French people with our expressions and have even appropriated french fries. The majority of Belgians come from France, that's why they have a french last names. In short, it's fine to drool like an idiot, but I don't think you're in the best position to talk about Brel.

He is showing us the progression of a song. Like a fruit, it takes time, and all of sudden it comes alive. He wrote his song standing. At the end: his song is about monkeys, but it is not complete.

6:22 Very interesting suddenly I translate Well here is my writing desk, this is where I write my songs. Victor Hugo also wrote standing up, not songs. But I am telling you this only to tell you that there are illustrious elders. When I tell you that I write my songs, it's not true, in reality the songs are quite an adventure, a long adventure. One evening we are very tired we have an idea ... A precise idea but not complete. So this idea wanders around you for weeks, months ... 4 or 6 months, and it matures. And on a good day when it's ripe like a good fruit pof, we take the idea, we take a pen, a sheet of paper, and we write a song. If you want I can show you what a song is in the process of being made, the one if at 3 or 4 months it's not finished at all it's called "les singes" and it's a bit nasty by the way. .

What can be hard to catch if you do not speak french is the double meanings in many sentences: For instance "la valse à mille temps" can be heard when read in franch as "La valse a mis le temps" "a 1000 beats valz" can be heard "a valz took its time" "la valse à 100 temps" can be heard " la valse ça s entend" or "la valse à 100 ans" wich means "the 100 beats valz" can be understood also when you read it in french as "a valz can be heard" or "a valz when you re 100 years old" "La valse à 20 temps" can be understood in french "la valse à 20 ans" "the 100 beats valz"can also be understood in french "the valz when you re 20 years old" and many more... And whatever the meaning you catch while listening at this song, it always fits naturally with the lyric that follows. Thia song is an unique object both in its structure as in its flow. A masterpiece.
