Jacob Collier reharmonizing Hey Jude
Музыка
Transcription of Jacob's reharmonization from the Wired video.
Yes, I transcribed the speech while my editor froze for some time and the frames were stuck lol.
The original video: • Jacob Collier Answers ...
And yes, do let me know in the comments if you have any particular transcription requests.
Note that I'd be a little less frequent with the uploads as my semester is going in full swing right now and I'd be fairly busy tho.
I'd bounce back soon tho dw

One of the amazing things about him is that, unlike many experts, he can actually explain things in ways understandable to relatively "regular" people
Ok so when he does it it's "reharmonization" but when I do it I "have no concept of music theory"

I think the hard part is not the work itself, but the availability of a near infinite number of options. I don't know much if anything at all about music, but I find it crazy that so many people dislike what he does and the decisions he takes. like, I've heard like what, 5-6 song he has made, and all of them are so out there, so unusual, and tickle my brain in just the right ways. like, even when he makes discordant or overly harmonized stuff, they stick to my thoughts like glue, like seeing a new color or understanding a optical illusion, and being like "damn, i didn't know you could do that". I find myself coming back to most of his songs I hear and adding them to my playlist, plus, his lyrics tend to be so wholesome and heartwarming as well, this guy really has changed my whole view on the concept of music

Some sequences of chords affirm the concept of centuries-old harmonic gravity, while others defy such. Achieving balance and logic is paramount to a successful alteration.
Collier is a true musician; Given the opportunity to teach, in a professional manner, without any fluff and distraction, he just couldn't resist the 'pitch bend' while highlighting the basic melody of the tune. (nice of you to put that in the transcription as well 😂)

Terribly bad. He can’t even play his own example to the end. The use of microtones in folk music is also stupid, this music is meant to be sung by any one. Also the harmony is meant to be related to any player. He plays the most insane alternative in a tutorial. The tutorial is bad, cause most people can’t even harmonize a cadence, but he is there looking overcomplicated in order to show “genius”. Imature child. He better stays giving concerts, as music theorist it is a disaster here
Dickens : it was the best of times, it was the worst of times Collier: of all the ages, epochs and contemporaneous stretches of the current space time fabric we could exist in, it could be said that what we are experiencing, at this moment, is a superstition of both the absolute optimal human experience and the nadir of what we could possibly live through, both existing, together, somehow, simultaneously. Idk, I wonder...at what point does it become a different song when you change the harmony so much (and time signature, to boot)? Typically reharmonization has a purpose (like make it jazzy, or prog rock, or whatever). But still, the audience has to recognize the song, right?
@harrisfrankou2368

I think it makes them rubbish, sing Yesterday a simple 2 to a 1 melody in F and play any other chord bar a triad, and it sucks. I've tried, I've sung Beatles songs for money, and even a simple FM7 sucks. It gives less room for Harmonic interplay. Look at Yesterday he goes up in IV's to get to D minor and Bb. He throws in E minor (not E*) to A7 to D minor to C Bb and he sings the Melodic minor scale against the chords it's genius. And Jazz like 11 V 1's I think this attitude sucks. If I want that complexity I'll go Chick Corea Coltrane Parker etc. If I want some sophisticated harmony with well crafted pop I'll go towards Steely Dan. Jazz can only influence Pop it can never supersede it.

The final parts are not the song though. It’s like something you could use in a film score. A variation on a theme. It’s unnatural for a song to transpose every few bars. It would be like altering the pitch. The beauty of Hey Jude is the simplicity. It doesn’t matter how you cover it or copy it, the talent is writing such a song to begin with. Another reason songs are written to a key is because the writer sings in that key. It’s unlikely you’d write across 5 keys in one song because most people don’t have that range.
