Your reaction was perfect. What can you say after hearing this. If this is your bag listen to his Christmas song and see if you find the microtone chord change. After this check out his new one with Yebba Torri Kelly and John Legend Bridge over troubled water. The song is so poweful it made me cry with joy.

check out "Jacob Collier: Moon River - Harmonic Analysis" at the Listening In KZread channel. He talks about Jacob's use of microtones, alternative tuning, shifting key centers, etc in Moon River. Pretty amazing stuff. And if you REALLY want your mind blown, look up Jacob's own Logic Session Breakdown of Moon River from his own channel. It is MIND BLOWING.

I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song. I had been working in my yard and for some reason back in 2020 I was on a Take 6 kick and Spotify slid this song in at the end of my Take 6 Playlist. I thought the whole time I was listening that it was them. By the end of the song I was bawling in tears laying out on the carport still thinking this was Take 6, and looked at my phone through my teary eyes and saw this kid named Jacob Collier. After 4 years of this rabbit trail, I've listened to his whole discography and all his KZread videos many many times and finding new things to love about this guy. I still can't get enough of our world's kindest musical genius!!! Oh and I found out that Jacob was heavily influenced by Take 6, so very grateful for them kinda introducing me to Jacob :)

JC composes his pieces in LOGIC. By his own admission, he used 1200+ lines to create this one song… I believe it took a week. By the way, have you heard him perform with Snarky Puppy? “Don’t You Know”-Family Dinner Vol. 2

nice reaction. it's like Oprah: you get a harmonized note! you get a harmonized note! you get a harmonized note! and it all seems real (and somewhat doable, if you're a musician with that kind of talent and a tad bit of study). but when one gets to harmonizing seven notes on one chord(s), as is here, mixing with all the other harmonies and arrangement in total...game over. only a few living people on this planet can get to seven on his/her own, and only a very small crop can even process what's going on. just walk away. that's why JC is so polarizing -- he makes people call him unlistenable (due to complexity), even though some are even extremeley accomplished musicians...and others call him unlistenable because they're accustomed to four chord-structured, formulaic songs. it's just the world that JC lives...and we're all beneficiaries of his output (more or less).

You reminded me of a saying my grandfather untold me once, “Every head is its own world.” And ever since I heard that… I have wished I had a machine that would allow me to glimpse into the world of certain musicians. JC’s mind is probably like IKEA… lol few people appreciate the way that everything is organized in the store and others hate it because you have to walk through the entire building just to check out lol

This music has a powerful emotional effect on me. However, i get even more intense joy because his Mum, and two sisters are singing on it too. How wonderful to make a Grammy winner with your (single) Mum and siblings? His Mum is the second voice, and his sisters third and fourth. And they 'pull their weight'; one of his sisters is the final highest note (she's a chorister). Please add "Bridge Over Troubled Water " (featuring, Yebba, John Legend, and Tori Kelly) to your list of music reactions. It's good!! Best Wishes. ☮ Jacob Collier makes a "Logic session breakdown" video explaining how he creates a specific song (if it warrants it). The 'LOGIC SESSION BREAKDOWN: "Moon River"' video may be fascinating for someone as musically sophisticated as you. Factoid: there are almost 5,000 sound files combined to make "Moon River". There is a story that Apple significantly increased the number of sound files 'Logic X' could handle after Collier released 'Moon River' and they discovered the complexity of his production (Collier had to 'mix down' hundreds of tracks into a few.)

Ok soooooo you have to listen to everything lmao. My suggestions are starting with all of In My Room Start to finish. It truly changed my whole life. Special shoutout to You and I, Saviour, and Hajanga. Then I'd watch the All Night Long video. And then Time Alone with You, All I Need, In Too Deep, and He Wont Hold You. And then of course the very newest single his cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water. As a fellow musician raised by a musician, the music this so called "human" makes lol is just other worldly I really struggle putting words together how much he means to me.

Okay, amazing and really, really beautiful. However, I closed my eyes when the humming of the melody began, and a vision of a wide-mouthed bottle with a plastic seal on the top appeared. Yea, I know, weird. But it sounded like the sound was coming from inside that bottle ... like someone needed to peel off the plastic seal and let the sound out. Other than that, fantastic. 😊

I'm one of those folks that has a love hate relationship with JC. I love how some of his music can make me feel. I love how he can elevate the music of others - even non musicians. His crowd work is transcendental. I've only seen Bobby McFerrin turn people into instruments like JC does. I KNOW I am watching something special when I see him perform. However, I... don't really like his songs. They don't feel like songs. They feel like experiments in music. He takes Moon River and turns it into this absolutely overwhelming euphony of sound. It's complex, it's beautiful, and its... too much. And a lot of his songs feel like that. He is an absolutely brilliant artist, deserving of all of the accolades he's received. I just need a rest any time I listen to his music.
