He held the 400m record for 16 years! He was the fastest 400m athlete in the world in his day, but obviously could not compete internationally due to sanctions. He was probably the fastest raw-speed rugby player I have ever seen.

Correction he could not compete due to racism and he was a whites only champion. So it means very little as he never competed against all available talent. But then again having these conversations with the people who nostalgicly speak of such a terrible period of SA history is the ultimate exercise in futility. Brian Habana beat odds he never had to face to become a great rugby player and you dare compare them.

​@@user-po3me4gr6g I remember Reinach well, I ran against him in 80s. He was very quick, quite a bit faster than Habana. By the way, those were the days of Piet Koornhof, min of sport, " nuwe sportbeleid ", as it was known in afrikaans. So there were quite a lot of black runners competing against whites. I ran against all races many times. Peter Ngobeni was a fast sprinter, he was SA champ at least once, competing against all races. It was a period when things could had moved faster in SA, but PW Botha could not cross the Rubicon, as they said. Roy b, CapeTown south africa 🇿🇦

Hands down the quickest Bok ever and the probably the fastest to play International fifteens. Absolute wheels. 10.28 100m and 45 second 400m. Can't argue with that.

In my opinion, the greatest winger the boks ever had.

There’s no substitute for pure speed.

That Bok backline for the Cavaliers...probably one of the best, if not the best backline SA has ever had. Naas, Johan Heunis, Danie Gerber, Christo Ferreira/Garth Wright, Carel du Plessis, Michael du Plessis, Jaco Reinach...I personally believe that if isolation didn't happen. SA and NZ would still be neck and neck, possibly with SA's nose in front. Some of the greatest players to have played the game denied an international stage.

As a nz er listening to that Cavaliers tour on radio have to agree,that was the best ever boks backline.If no isolation in80s then pretty much boks and abs neck to neck , possibly boks with the nose in front hard to say

To be fast in athletics is one thing, but to be fast like Jaco on a rugby field, that's pure speed to the next level.

My first rugby memory was that last try in the clip!

These guys knew about the importance of including the backline. And the wings had confidence in their speed. Wish he could still be around today for the Boks.

Thanks mate. Yeah, it was the Cavaliers tour, which was a non event for New Zealanders, but the biggest thing ever in SA as we craved some international competition. Not an official series, but it was entertaining

@@RealRugby As a teenager in the 80s the Cavaliers tour was definitely not a non event for us in NZ. I remember watching VHS video tapes of games with my cousins. It was a fascinating time.

The 92 Bokke team were average at best. The 94 team that toured NZ was the same NZ beat them on both occasions

It was muscle and strength. He was a power sprinter. He didn't have much fat on him. But I get you. He could have been a 9.90 second sprinter if he lost 20 kilos

He was not very tall, his wikipedia says 5ft 10inch. I ran against him in 80s. I reckon he might not even have been 5ft 10inch, maybe a bit less if I remember correctly. But his body was almost as wide as his height ! He was not quite lean , as other sprinters were. Before a race, as we were standing on line waiting for starter to set us off, he would break from his lane, walk from first to last lane shaking everyone's hand. Not sure why he did this, maybe to intimidate everyone. By the way, I actually knew his dad as well, a dentist, with a similar build to him. Roy b Cape town, south africa 🇿🇦

Harry Coetzee, 10.3 , fairly sure about that. It was hand timed, not electronic. I ran against him once. His best distance was 400m. 45.01, electronic time, sa record.

Man had some serious pace, but some of the claims as to what many players can run 100 metres in are highly dubious. There are outliers, you are not running (an official at least) 10.3 100 metres off the back of a 45' 400. There are many faster 400 specialists today who couldn't run a 10.3. He's probably at least 1/3 of a second off that, which is still absolutely rapid for a field sportsman....

This isn't the brightest comment. You're suggesting that all 400m runners have the same time transition to the 100m. Absolutely a guy can clock 45 in the 400 and a 10.3 in the 100.

@@TheShepdawg9 it's brighter than yours - there's no specialist 100 runner who could run 45 for 400, and if you know ANY 400 metre specialist apart from Wade Van Niekerk (who's 2 seconds faster than 45) who has run an official - and by that I mean not he said/she said - 10.3 for the 100, by all means - point him out....

Habana said his pb was 11.00 flat and not this 10.4 that's thrown around. Philip burger and Brent Russell both at 10.5. Chavhanga said his was 10.5 not 10.27. Reinach was quicker than both.
