Gerrie Germishuys - A Classic Wing
Спорт
Gerrie Germishuys was a classic winger who regularly beat his opponents on the outside. Just watch his try against the All Blacks in 1981. When last did a Springbok winger beat his opponent on the outside like that?
He will go down as one of the greatest Springbok wingers of all time.
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

What a player he was. As a Kiwi my heart went in my mouth every time he got the ball, he was that dangerous. Some fantastic Bok players in that era but Germishuys was exceptional.

He was a classic wing that beat his opponents on the outside. Met him a couple of times, he is a great man
Fantastic wing!
Probably the best left wing South Africa has ever had. Great speed, with a great step. He would have really rocked the rugby world today!! How fantastic to see him with Danie Gerber, one of the greatest Centres ever and then to include Ray Mordt. ( despite having Naas Botha on the team). That was when the Boks were able to play good running Rugby- despite Naas .
Man, I loved watching this guy play when I was a kid. Everything you could ask for in a wing.
I had coffee with oom Gerrie this morning. I knew he was a fast sprinter, but didn't know how fast. He told me as student he ran a 100m in competition, clocking 10.5 seconds electronic.
No disrespect to Gerrie Ghermishuys but on the 1981 Bok tour to NZ I thought he was in his late 30s rather than his early 30s. But what a good player he was and that classic backline try against the ABs 2nd test in Wellington reminded me of that try he scored against the same team in the 1st test 1976.
Day dreaming@ 3:26 are we Clive Woodward? Gerrie the wonder winger! Lit up the field with his skill, a classic winger especially using the touchline as a friend. His tries vs AB's '76 & '81 truly outstanding. Enjoy this type of winger!
Wow, what a backline, that 1980's Bok squad. And Hennie Bekker channeling his inner Frik du Preez in the 1981 NZ tour.
Not only was Gerrie almost unstoppable, but to make matters worse for their opponents, the Mordt-Germishuys-Gerber combination was virtually unplayable.

That was an amazing combination. So sad they didn't get the opportunity to play more test rugby
Fantastic player,remember him clearly 👏
Watching this guy. along with Danie Gerber, reminds us of the depths the modern game has plummeted to..we will NEVER again see skill like this..
Always a dangerous winger.
That try!
Know oom Gerrie had wheels, but my word, he could run!!!
Sadly Bayvel just passed away.

Orsum player 👊🏉
The 1989 try was quite a surprise. The first time that I saw that. Does anyone know which match that was?

@@christoburger Reason for the match? It all was old boys and bv Germishuys' team had Transvaal Springboks like Bavel and Bosch.
That hair...😂😂😂

You forgot Danie Gerber legend
Just a question of the rhetorical type. How come there seems to be no footage of Gerrie scoring Currie Cup tries? I'm sure he must have scored a lot because he wouldn't have been representing South Africa otherwise. I said a rhetorical question as I'm sure you would have uploaded the footage if you had it.

Unfortunately, getting footage of Currie Cup rugby before 1984/1985 is almost impossible. Gerrie scored over 150 tries in domestic rugby, but the footage just doesn't exist...

@@RealRugby Thanks - as always. I thought it might be the case. A pity because I'm sure some of those tries would be real rippers.

Just watched a vid you my like Real Rugby. Apologies if you have already seen it. 1981.08.25 - New Zealand Maori vs South Africa Uploaded by Juan Rugby. Gerrie has a great match and plays his way back into the test team. I went to the first test in Christchurch and Darius Botha had taken Gerrie's jersey. Interesting to see the Prince of Wings playing centre in this match. A good old fashioned torrid struggle.

@@MrLinwood68 thanks mate, I have this match in my archive, its a classic game in the mud. The Boks were lucky to get away with a draw to be honest...
His try against Allblacks 1976, SA's finest , imo

Agreed. The speed the swerve and the commitment to beat a million defenders and score. What more could you ask from a winger? And I'm an All Black fan
