Fantastic player. He had a streety sort of aura,I played touch with him a few times and was impressed by how easily he mingled with us. He had a massive heart for people. Rip you legend !

as a kiwi he was first bok I really enjoyed watching... fast ,strong tenacious!and competitive..

Some of these clips got real good moves, great support runs and backline play, not what Springbok Rugby looks like today.

RIP James, had good fortune to meet him on the rugby field at Greeside High (vs Bryanston High)in 1986, was a fan ever since.

In loving memory of Greenside High School's own Springbok Rugby hero. What a fighter! I used to live in the same suburb as him, friendly, down to Earth. James you will be sorely missed.

@@steventheron1165 Yes I remember Rooseveldt High. I think our deputy headmaster Mr. Chrighton ended up as headmaster at Rooseveldt.

He was MY HERO when i grew up and he will always stay MY HERO. No person will ever replace my hero.

Back when the Boks still played "off-load" rugby, and not "win the contact" or "kicking game" rugby RIP James, you will always be a legend!

I agree I too watch old south african matches and see the stark difference in playing style they were physical but boy with snyman at centre they could run lines and offload well.

Amazing that you have all this footage. James was one of my favourite players so thank you very much.

Great video featuring one of the greatest players. As a boy Danie Gerber was my first favourite and after he retired James Small became my favourite. I was so happy when he broke the try scoring record for the Springboks.

Hearing all those players names again took me back many years. I was so sad when Small left Transvaal to play for Natal. That first play was between my two favorite teams, Blue Bulls and Transvaal. I am a Joburg boy who went to boarding school in Northern Transvaal and played rugby up there in primary school instead of football like most English schools.

South Africa have just the same quality wingers now, they're just not unleashed enough - but when they are.... World Champions

What a pace, what a smile... sadly missed.
