Jaclyn Lopez: Florida’s Frightening Phosphate Problem Presentation

Florida is home to the world’s largest phosphate mine, and receptacle for one billion tons of radioactive phosphogypsum, the hazardous byproduct from turning mined phosphoric ore into fertilizer. And the problem is only growing. The industry now seeks to expand this land-altering practice by 50,000 acres, altering waterways, destroying habitat. Learn more about what’s being done to put an end to phosphate mining in Florida.

Thank you Jaclyn for your great presentation and for standing up for Our Lands and Water. I would like to speak to you about Mosaic and the Desoto County Denial and the coming "Special Magistrate" mediation session.

I was born and raised in Bartow in 1961. I lived and played about 1 mile from a gypsum stack. People I grew up with have been dying at a very high rate with fast acting and aggresive cancers. These stacks emit radon gas that would be in the air, and it would drift over Bartow as it would flow towards the peace river valley basin

Mosaic is very secretive and defensive (including fencing & flyovers &. ; security). It’s difficult to find any information about any aspect of their business and activities. Only rosy PR virtue signaling about feeding the world (exporting big Agra business system of destructive use & dependence on prescriptive chemicals that render soil lifeless, are an unsustainable model). Formerly affiliated with Archer Daniels Midland (one of the most hated companies in America - huge violators of all environmental laws), Mosaic is joined at the hip with FL Republican legislators, who hold fast to the mantra of property rights freedom to do whatever you want. FL’s water management (quality, engineered use and release) is directed and controlled by businesses such as Mosaic, the Fanjuls & Big sugar, and Disney. The big lie is they are good for us to have them, live here, in this world on this planet - them vs. quality of life. Scale mIning phosphorus and use of manufactured fertilizer is a creative addiction to a legacy business contrived “method” of farming rife with purposeful disinformation, legislative control, denial, blame, obfuscation, lack of transparency or oversight, exploitation of perceived weaknesses, state monopolies and ignorance. Fertilizer is an “easy” but highly processed solution to recycling what exists & ultimately deprives the soil of nutrients. Adding fertilizer was intended to make money off of growing (visually & measured by weight) to make more fast; nutrition, water use & quality, destruction of life or habitat & degradation of the environment was never part of that equation.

No, silly. Phosphate is a nonmetallic element that is found in extensive veins in layers of the Earth’s crust. Part of our living ecosystem, it occurs in sediment, silt, soil, water and air, in volcanic ash, fossils, sediment rocks, mineral dust, developed over millions of years. It leaches into streams & rivers & oceans so in soil is absorbed by plants & in the food we eat.
