LYRICS:
Well I've been out walking
I don't do too much talking these days
These days
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to
And I had a lover
It’s so hard to another these days
These days
Now if I seem to be afraid
To live the life that I have made in song
It's just that I've been losing so long
I’ll keep on moving
Things are bound to be improving these days
These days
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend
Don’t confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them
Songwriters: Browne Jackson

My girlfriend at the time, my future wife, introduced me to Jackson Browne in 1973. I’ve been his biggest fan ever since. My beautiful wife passed away last October. Now, when I hear his songs, especially this one, I cry, not because of the sadness I feel, but because of the beautiful memories they bring.

I am so sorry for your loss. When I first heard Jackson Browne ( as late as 1978) I was blown away. I've followed the music all my life. Do you believe in the Afterlife? I didn't but now I do. There is so much science that pointe to the reality of the Subtle Dimension. I do believe you will meet your dear lady again and never be parted. Till then, sir, may you walk your days in peace..

Jackson Browne, the great lyricist! He combines words in such a profound way. Saw him and James Taylor in Portland, OR a couple of years ago and James Taylor mentioned that so often, the audience was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. A tribute to Jackson’s profound words. Such a talent! All these musicians are the absolute best!

"I've been aware of the time going by, They say in the end, its the wink of an eye" I am in my 50's now and listened to Jackson for 40 plus years. It's a shame that the awareness of Life's deeper meanings we have later in life isn't part of our understanding when we are young.

@@jhodges1369 Or it's just as well, depending on how you look at it. To have full 'awareness of Life's deeper meanings' at a very young age might just stop a lot of people living wide while they have the time and health to do so. Also in my experience most of them are truly individually learned by experience - so there's that ;-) Jackson's beautifully crafted music stands alongside above all that and represents a mature and wistful look at life with all its vicissitudes - and for the thinking listener, I believe it always will.

Well written post. This is the first version of the song I've heard. Now I've also heard it by Gregg Allman, Elliott Smith, Nico and Saint Vincent. It is American Songbook.

You are a man, Champ. So few unnastand the true and real and soul of love. It's not about Pretty or Hott, Its two hearts that move in tandem and amplify each others. You have more than any dollar could ever buy. Rest easy, you are the envy if the world. May God bless.

I walked into a record store in Minneapolis and the album Saturate Before Using was playing and I think it was Jamacia Say You Will. I could feel it deep in my soul and didn't know who it was so I asked to buy the album playing and my love for Jackson Browne began! This is one of my favorites!

The first time the opening bars hit my ears, I felt a tug that strengthens with every listen. Jackson's humanity humbles me... he humbles all of us in the most profound mystical way.

Why is that in all of the nearly 50 years I've heard this song, it NEVER gets old; and in fact, its many insights continue unfolding with the wisdom and experience that life brings. From such a young period of his life, a song he wrote beyond his personal experience remains rich and full of poignant depths.

My formative years hold on dearly to these melodies and words in a time capsule as a tribute to my youth. And don’t we all find ourselves guilty of allowing our lives to be held captive by nostalgia sometimes? Jackson Browne. His words and melodies are certainly some of the many layers that are the soundtrack to our lives. Thanks to God above for the beautiful gift, JB

I remember when he first released this song. I sadly loved it then, and I love it still. Thank you sooooo much. I like Gregg Allman's version , too. But to me, this will always be Jackson's song. Such a human song. Thanks for posting. And thanks for the song.

It breaks my heart to hear him losing his voice and range, but I'd still give anything to see him live again. I remember hearing that song probably 50 years ago and how much it meant to me. One of the greatest songwriters (and singers) ever.

I thought your comment "aren't that many days left" was poignant and it reminded me of a line in The Pretender... "I've been aware of the time going by, They say in the end, its the wink of an eye" I am in my 50's now and listened to Jackson for 40 plus. It's a shame that the awareness of Life's deeper meanings we have later in life isn't part of our understanding as younger men.

Jackson Browne is a music legend who churns me just like when I first heard him through a dearest friend who departed too early. I also love how that he always brings highly talented musicians to play with him. Greg Leisz, for instance, is an American artistic treasure. God bless.

👍 🫨 These lyrics basically sum up my own 70 year old ‘life’ story. It’s an ‘older’ song that I hadn’t heard before today, and am so glad to have found it! J. Brown, imo, somewhat resembles a combination of others, like Gilmour, Roger Waters, Luke Sital Singh, Foy Vance, Neil Young, and a couple others - all rolled into one talented person! Though I’ve missed out on his music in the past since I was a teenager, 🙏 thanks to the vast music availability on YT, I can now catch up!

Jackson Browne is deeply tied to my memories of dear friends I made in the 1970's who have since passed away. His melancholy thoughtful lyrics, steady presence, and perseverance on the music scene for these 50+ years is a gift, certainly to those of us who came of age during the 60's - 70's.. listening to these great tunes. Thank you JB, for being one of the sound tracks to our lives - and keeping my friends alive in my heart.
