Jackie Stewart Testando Benetton Ford Turbo

The Ford V6 turbo in the Benetton had around 900 bhp. This was almost double the power of the Cosworth DFV V8 Stewart used to win the 1973 World Championship with Tyrrell.

@@keithjones9054 ... The Cosworth designed and built Ford V6 turbo never had any more than 900 bhp in either 1986 or 1987. The rule changes for 1987, specifically the pop-off valve on the turbo restricting it to 4.0 Bar of boost, actually helped the Ford be more competitive that year because they actually had less horsepower to lose than the Honda, TAG-Porsche and BMW engines. While they lost somewhere in the region of 300 bhp from 1986, the Ford was still able to run closer to its peak.

@@keithjones9054 At no stage was the Ford V6 turbo a match for the Honda V6 turbo. Not on power, not even close. The Ford even in qualifying only had 900 at best. The Honda had upwards of 1200 bhp. Try telling someone who doesn't know. They might believe you because I don't.

Bet he was no slower than their actual race drivers, appears to be going at the maximum on the onboard, amazing for a driver who retired nearly two decades earlier.

Such is the talent. Which means a young Jackie Stewart today would be a force to be reckoned with. Ayrton Senna had a lot of respect for him.

Shame we don’t get proper analytical tests of multiple cars like this these days. Instead we get brief segments where the driver proclaims “listen to that engine” and the editor proceeds to play music over the sound of the car. We barely get any descriptions of what the car is doing, how it differs from another. Todays F1 coverage could be so much better

I can't imagine trying to qualify at Monaco with 1500 bhp. I don't see where you could actually plant that much hp on that half ass "race track". I know there are many who love Monaco, but street courses are usually awful, and Monaco has got to be the worst street course of all time for modern era cars. I wonder if anyone really tried to run full qualifying power at Monaco with those engines. There are times when more power slows you down on some tracks. It wouldn't surprise me is some teams actually cut back the power. I had a driver that was having a hard time at a track, and disabled one cylinder to cut power. He went out and set fast time in qualifying. He insisted on having all the cylinders hitting in the race, and finished second. I still believe if he's been running on 7 instead of 8 he'd have won that race. The main problem with having more power than you need is you wonder if you left something on the table, could I have gone a little faster, you tend to concentrate too much on the go pedal, trying to get more power down. It's easier to just floor the pedal and concentrate on aiming the car. Electronic intervention such as traction control sure makes a so so driver look better.

The most powerful f1 engine ever "only" had around 1350 hp, it was a 1.5L 4 cylinder BMW M12 engine used in a few teams, and that was only in qualifying for 3-4 laps. In the racetrim they only had around 600-850 hp depending on track and conditions.

Difícil imaginar, mas a Benetton usou, sim, motor Ford TEC V6 Turbo em 1987.
