1985 Lotus 97T F1 V6 Turbo Sound - Accelerations & Flaming Warm Up
Yesterday I was at Imola circuit, in Italy, for the Ayrton Senna Tribute event held for the 20th anniversary of the death of Ayrton.
One of the car I saw on track was this 1985 Lotus 97T F1 car which was able to achieve 3 victories (Senna won 2 and De Angelis 1), 2 second places and 4 third places. The car also achieved 8 pole positions. The 97T was moved by a Renault 1.5 litre turbocharged V6 engine which produced approximately 900 bhp for races (the special qualifying engines were reported to produce over 1,000 bhp).
Bought 28 years ago by Fredy Kumschick, was no longer been used in a circuit till yesterday. In this video you can hear an amazing warm up (with an insane flame at 2:01) and some driving scenes on a wet Imola circuit.

Sounds like it's got a hell of a misfire. Was this its first run in 28 years, or maybe the engine's just not happy with the rain and cold temperatures?
This video doesn't seem to give a proper reproduction of the sound. Because of the wet, he can't accelerate and go to higher RPM. If he would, the car will spin immediately.

when i was a kid and watched f1 with my dad, it was the v10 era, i never heared a f1 v6 turbo engine, except from the 2014 cars, but those sound shit. These v6 turbo's are amazing, the butterfly effect all over again:D. i wish we could get these engines in the 2015 cars:) or the v10's or the v12. because those engine where violent and passionate. thats why we're all here:)
He was the best driver in the rain. Viewers cheered for rain on race day, as well Senna would win for sure. And he won. Senna trained in the rain because he claimed to have difficulty with the wet track. And in the video, Lotus also appears in the rain. It was on purpose? kkk. It's a great example for us Brazilians. I'm in love with this machine for more than 30 years. Amazing piece of F1 history.
IMO undeniable the best F1 period - the ‘80s turbo era. Love the look and sound of the cars. All the cars very different and unique. Love the backfiring and flames from the excess fuel in the headers. It says something when you have a crowd of people around a garage applauding when the engine has been running.
