Jackie's Lecture At Oxford University Part 1

This is a clip from a lecture I gave at Oxford University back in 1992. They gave me an award and a fellowship in the Oxford Union Society. The first American comedian to receive such an honor. That's how they got me to work for nothing. Enjoy!

    I was driving along the M40 one saturday afternoon, listening to Jackie Mason on the radio. I had to pull over onto the hard shoulder because I was laughing so much that I was a danger to other drivers. A very, very funny man, he also comes over as a kind & modest man.

    He's funny about just being funny. He's a CLEAN act in the same vein as Jerry Seinfeld or an old-time great Red Skelton. Saw him in Sparks, NV in the summer of '75. He kept our whole family in stitches for well over an HOUR! Man, was that guy ever FUNNY...and totally clean. It CAN be done.

    JACKIE MASON! AMAZINGLY FUNNY AND WITTY! Jackie endures as perhaps the wittiest comedian around in decades. I find myself consistently laughing at the truthfulness of his portrayal of different ethnic groups! He makes us all realize how ridiculous and humorous certain behavior are whether you are Jewish, not Jewish, or of a different religion or persuasion. Leave it to Jackie to deliver these insights with great wit!

    I love Jackie Mason. His humour has a dignity and old-fashioned class that I can really respect. I don't mean to put down any other style of comedy; I just like his perspective. He doesn't get confessional and he is proud of his culture without insisting that others affirm his cultural identity.

    There is nothing "racist" about Mr. Mason. He is just a very funny comic. All this "racist" stuff is a bunch of nonsense. When did we become so unbelievably "sensitive" (to the point of stupidity)?

  • @TheDoctor1225

    @TheDoctor1225

    The first time that someone stood up and screamed "Racist!" or "I'm offended" and instead of rationally pointing out that they were WRONG, period, and shutting it down, we (as a nation, as a people) gave in to them and started becoming more concerned about "feelings" than reality. That's when it began, unfortunately.

What a wonderful man, a comic genius, and much missed- only Dave Chappelle has his style and guts on what passes for the comedy "scene" today. I namecheck both great men in my new book Becoming a Writer- available from Charlie Byrne's Bookshop in Galway, Ireland. Please excuse the plug and thanks for reading- and Jackie? Keep them laughing in heaven.
