Jackie Gleason talks bad habits, good health, 'The Honeymooners' 1985

Ойын-сауық

Jackie Gleason talks bad habits, good health, "The Honeymooners" 1985. Comedian Jackie Gleason is affable and amusing in this interview recorded in 1985, the second year prior to his death. Gleason first talks about his early days working in nightclubs and seizes an opportunity to set the record straight when asked about his penchant for booze. Smoking continuously throughout the interview, the discussion turns to his health and then his popular TV show, "The Honeymooners." Gleason is joined by his wife as the interview concludes and he remarks on the longevity of their relationship, which he craftily twists into an off-the-cuff joke. 🅲🅲 / @tvcrewguy

I was a personal trainer in Manhattan in 1998. An old small nice man came in the gym for his orientation. His name was Brad and said he was a producer for The Honeymooners. He said Jackie Gleason would show up 10 minutes before the show, glance through the script and knock it out of the park. He was that good.

And the truth of why he stopped doing it was because the show was about to be cancelled. Had nothing to do with "Quality" of the scripts not being good.

I came home from Vietnam in 1969 wounded badly with months laid up in a VA hospital near Chicago Hinze VA. Every night at 10 pm the Honeymooner was on TV. I was on a ward with forty other guys and we all had our little TV's set up where we could move the antenna with a cain to get the best reception. Jackie Gleason was great for us vets I'll never forget him.

I cried when Jackie Gleason died. I typically don't get emotional when a celebrity dies, but he was more than that to me, he was like an old friend. The "Great One" was just that, great! The way he abused himself it is a miracle that he lived as long as he did. Amazingly, smoking 5 packs of cigarettes a day for 50+ years wasn't even what got him, it was colon cancer- cancer in which he didn't even try to treat. They say that laughter adds years to your life, and perhaps that is why he lived as long as he did- but one thing is certain, if laughing truly does add years to your life, then because of you Mr. Gleason I am going to live to be a VERY OLD MAN! Thank you for that Jackie- and away we go!!!

My first image of him at 10 years old was as Buford T Justice and that was funny as hell. Then as Minnesota Fats. I heard of the Honeymooners but did not see any until the early mid-80's. Although I remember seeing a couple one-off Honeymooners specials as a kid on CBS that were in color and took place in the 60's. At first I thought those were the original ones. Back then you just had the big 3 networks so as a kid you just started watching. Didn't see the originals until after we got cable.
