While skill does play an important part, remember what Jackie said from one of his interview that people commenting how good he is, his response was he's not "good", but he was willing to eat the cost, spend time, effort to retry as many time as require to get the perfect shots (sometimes take over 100 attempts for doing one non-essential scene just to make it more entertaining for the audiences to watch)- something that the Hollywood film-makers don't do as it would increase the production cost, as well as extending the filming process. Also often that just do the shots poorly, and just leave it up to the "editing" to fix the scenes rather than redoing it. That's the differences between respecting the craft and let the goods and reputation speak for themselves vs just making a product and try to get people to buy it relying heavily just on marketing and generating as much hype as possible to grab as much attention from people as possible.

@@Oly1y you missed the point
I just want to point out that, not only is Jackie Chan one of the best stuntmen of all time, but the people he works with are nearly as great. They work together so hard to create something that looks accidental but took weeks of planning and rehearsing. You're only as good as the people you work with, and Jackie's team is definitely top notch. God, I love this movie.
@nachonachoman

It's more impressive than that. Michelle Yeoh mentioned in a GQ interview, they couldn't really afford to do much rehearsing. So they just start doing takes. Basically, mentally plan it out and just do it. And see what the camera gets. And hope nobody dies. Crazy

Jackie worked with and had some of the best stunt teams ever in cinema history. Since digital and green rooms are the main thing this is becoming a lost art in modern times.
I love all the little touches Jackie puts into his fights. His face always has this paniced look of a man just barely keeping up with the fight, like every move could be his last. And, he always does that little hand wave whenever he hits someone, or in this case closes the ladder, just makes him seem that much more human. Even after this incredibly one-sided fight, you always see Jackie's character as somehow the underdog.

That last ladder sound startling the bad guys walking away is a hilarious touch. It's a room full of men who'll suffer decades of PTSD triggered by seeing or just _hearing_ a ladder. These guys are part of his action crew. They train on making every look fluid and realistic. With great practice comes less mistakes but they still happen.
Something I love about this scene is how we can see the ladder in the background far before he actually uses it. At 2:29 we see a brief glimpse of it, then much more clearly at 2:32. In the fight beforehand we can see him slowly making his way towards it, and it builds up the audience's expectations for what's to come. We see the ladder more and more clearly until he finally picks it up and uses it as a weapon against them. And even after the fight we get a brief joke at the end, where the ladder falls and all the bad guys feel legitimately terrified for one brief moment, while Jackie's just like, "the hell's gotten into you?"

Jackie Chan fight scenes always use the environment so efficiently. Rather than being just a background the environment is a character that participates in the fight and it is most often one of the most influental players in the fight scene. It adds so much depth to the scene and it makes you feel like it's real.

The back pedal of jackie chan fights are legendary, he may look like hes winning and pulling off some insanity but hes just struggling to keep pace with being completely surrounded! hes a genius at this type of fighting which is so fluid and grounded. Reactions to environments and not wanting to get clamped by the ladder but still does, i still cant get enough how he figures all this stuff out and hits the mark with every movie...
This fight scene and choreography is STILL considered one of the gold standards in Hong Kong Kung Fu action films!
When Ra’s Al Ghul told Bruce Wayne to be mindful of his surroundings, he was actually flashing back to watching Jackie Chan fight.

I grew up with Jackie Chan & Bruce Lee movies so whenever I see an action scene or combat scene from Hollywood I think about movies like First Strike. No edits, no safety, but faith in his abilities to do these creative fight choreo’s. I still re run a lot of his movies every year and I’m almost 31 now. I thank God for Jackie Chan. Whenever you feel down his movies will lift your mood up and put a smile on your face.
They purposefully make action scenes in today's movies unclear, shaky, dark and fast because it helps disguise the CGI or even a stunt double. Not many actors have the skills, agility and balls to do stuff like this.
I like how he's also constanly getting beaten up. Instead of following the hollywood version of getting beaten up and then supermanning everything
Man its 2022 and seeing stunt men or action movies like this is insanely rare. This is rare, raw talent
What I love here is that Jackie even if winning because fucks sake he’s a legend, always gets pummeled around a bit, he’s human. He isn’t someone that never gets hit, everything about this scene is pure and utter perfection
So when Jackie gets really serious he drinks a lot of booze and finds the closest ladder. Alright he's unstoppable now.

You really want to be saddened, go watch a modern Hong Kong/Chinese action film. Again, there are exceptions, but it's crazy how far action cinema there has fallen.

jackie said it's just becuz the actor dont know how to fight, that's why they use that kind of thing to make action scene

@@antgto agree, the modern Chinese/hongkong movies just became an attempt to mimic America and also sad that the new actors limited the resources that Stephen Chow and Jackie chan can use as director, many actors doesn't really want to fight themselves and sometimes old Jackie was forced to carry the show by himself, which is painful to look at that old Jackie can't really do extreme stunt anymore and also no actor willingly to do the stunts.
I could *never* really tire of watching (and learning) from the choreography, execution, editing, performances (by his entire stunt team), and the incredibly well-done sound and score. 💪😎🤟 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
Fucking Legendary fight scene. I will always remember the ladder fight
I can’t believe *Happy Gilmore* won an MTV Movie Award for 1996's Best Fight for Adam Sandler and Bob Barker. But *Police Story 4: First Strike* deserves that award the most!
I like Jackies reaction at 4:12 when more guys show up, he's like ' c'moon guys, WTF?'
Anytime I see a set of ladders, I think of this scene. Watching this scene gives you so much energy. The sound, the music, every movement, is so captivating.

kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZHmpkqOyoc-7ZNo.html the music sounds waaaaaaay better in the original version. More energy and intensity.
Think what makes Jackie Chan top-tier is, the choreography is so complex, fast, and raw that it looks real, and you forget it's choreographed. Or he doesn't just win simply because he's the protagonist and script just magically works in his favor. He feels pain, and gets victory through extreme perseverance.
For me, Jackie Chan will go down as one of the greatest entertainers/performers who ever lived.

Haven't seen anything that good in decades. No one choreographs anymore.
One of the absolute best fight scenes ever.
"Who fights with a ladder? Well, Jackie Chan does." -James Rolfe
That is beautiful choreography. I love Jackie's fight scenes.
One of if not the best choreographed Jackie Chan fight scenes.
I find it very funny that when Jackie fights, he always makes it seem very realistic, like everytime he gets hit, doesn't pretend to not be in pain. The moment the ladder closed on his hands, he shook them out because getting your fingers pinched by something thin hurts. Even when he stops fighting to get into the waiting stance, he shakes out his hands consistently. And when more people come he just has an air that goes "Really? how are you not tired yet?"
This scene as well as the whole film were AMAZING. Jackie Chan used to do unique epic cool movies with him taking risks and many injuries during his career. Now there aren't such talented actors like Jackie Chan and these films are no longer of great demand. Now most films are mainstream high-budged boring ones either like fast and furious or animated ones like kung-fu panda or ones, like capitan america are full of special effects and computer animation. No more american mainstream bullshit please, we want real-action like these Jackie Chan undying classics.

Good movies Conor and I would put the raid 2 over those you've listed. But still your listed movies use a lot of cgi and camera trickery like sped up film to accomplish what Jackie did from the early 80s onward.

But kung fu panda 1 & 2 were awesome. 😂 And Jackie chan was in it. You can’t compare animated movie with live-action movies, I love this fight scene but meanwhile I hate fast and furious movies, I absolutely love kung fu panda 1 & 2
Jackie Chan is one of the only people who has mastered the art of apologizing while kicking the shit out of you, and you know he means it. That, above all else, is his true talent.
The only being on earth who could do comedy and action scenes simultaneously and both be good. And that's exactly why Jackie Chan is one of, if not the best action star.
One of the greatest fight scenes ever. How anyone can dislike this just boggles my mind.
They should have Jackie Chan in WWE 2K16. He would be great in a ladders Match.

I love how we ALL know this as the "ladder fight" when the ladder is used in the fight for 40 seconds of a 4-minute action scene from a 107-minute film. It's just that good and crazy.
You can never go wrong watching a Jackie Chan movie.
This happened to me when I was at my local take-away and jokingly asked for flied lice. Never again. Seriously though, this is my favourite Jackie Chan fight scene. I love the way he differs from other martial arts movie stars by getting hit repeatedly throughout his fights. he always takes a beating, which is more realistic than other movie stars. (I'm aware I used the word "realistic" when talking about this scene, but you know what I mean).

I love this scene, bro! I watch this all the time. This and the "Rumble In The Bronx" hangout fight scene are the ultimate!
Makes me picture one of those classic kung fu movies set back in the day where theres a bunch of masters of different styles like crane style etc wandering around. Then you see one of them walking around with an aluminum ladder. "4th rung crests the mountain" *Whack*

And the other masters begrudgingly acknowledge his style because it works... somehow.
that was amazing like a dance
I could watch jackie fight all day!!
I like all the Jackie Chan classic movies but this one has to be my favorite by him 👍
As a huge Chan from his early days - back in the early 80’s (I’m old), here’s a fact that still infuriated me to this day lol. 1997 MTV fight scene award - this was nominated. It lost to Robin Tunney vs Fairuza Balk in The Craft - where two teen “witches” have a magic fight. Seriously.

If Jackie Chan was in Infinity War, there would be no end game. "And someone get this man a ladder." -Black Panther, probably
John Wick: "i fought someone with pencil and book" Jackie Chan: *hold my ladder*
