Jack the Ripper: The Evidence for Guilt. Part Three

Welcome to the House of Lechmere
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, LIKE AND SHARE!
This is the third episode where Edward Stow examines the trail of guilt pointing to Charles Lechmere as being the man known to history as Jack the Ripper. In this episode Edward Stow follows established investigative practices to see if Charles Lechmere can be connected to any of the other Whitechapel Murders and he gives particular insights into the murders of Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and the Pinchin Street Torso.

It has occurred to me this morning at 430am in london, that perhaps another reason for Lechmere not getting stuck in for a few months after moving away from his mum's is that the months of June and July are a little bit too loo light at around that hour that he goes to work. It is only once August is a couple of weeks old does the sunrise happen later , meaning that he has the darkness truly back in his favour in the hour he leaves for work, does the business and then arrived at work. Perhaps then as the autumn starts its transition to winter in november, it was becoming too miserable weather wise, for lechmere's "flowering" and also less likely for his victim's to be as accesible on the streets. mary kelly was afterall, not butchered on the street, but inside, away from the elements.

People often think that Lechmere was lucky when PC Neil happened to be by the body of Polly Nichols as PC Mizen entered Buck's Row. I think Lechmere had intimate knowledge about police activity and their timed routes, knocking up duties etc. He might have even seen PC Neil's light or heard his voice/whistle to his left as he left Buck's Row heading for PC Mizen's location. Also, only a killer with detailed and intimate knowledge of the area and a cool calm demeanor would be able to get away with these things. This is why the Kosminsky theory always bothered me. He was a complete nutjob who ate and drank from the ground. I think Kosminsky was far too wild and wacky to pull off these perfectly timed murders and escapes.

Good point. The killer had to be somewhat cunning to get away with all this if ripper did kill 10 plus people.. some of the successful serial killers are people that blend in and have smarts.. the insane ones stick out like sore thumbs and are in asylums quick.

But there are organized and unorganized killers. Jack the Ripper whoever hides behind that synonym, was definitely an unorganized killer, looking for the victim of opportunity, there is no great thing of planning. It's right the offender knew the area and this was alongside with luck the reason why never caught.@@titanman9000

I am totally convinced Lechmere is that infamous culprit. Over the many decades, the story matastised into extreme theories. All along, he was in plain sight. An ordinary man, leading an ordinary life, doing an ordinary job. A local man. How marvelous that you and Christer Holmgren (l recommend reading Cutting Point) solved the mystery. It's a real relief and not before time. You're both heroes in my book. Thank you!!!

Less than a minute’s walk away from the arch where the torso was deposited were two lock-up cats meat sheds. We know that Lechmere’s mother, Maria, was selling cats meat (horse flesh) out of a shop in St George Street by 1891, but when did she get into that business? When the torso was deposited in July, 1889 she was living in Cable Street, and the cats meat sheds were on the corner of Cable Street and and Backchurch Lane. They couldn’t have been in a more convenient location for dismembering and storing a body prior to its being deposited in Pinchin Street. A survey in 1887 identified a cats meat vendor named Jackson living in Mary Ann Street - a close neighbour of Maria - but he seems to have given up the business by 1891.

Emma Kenny, a clinical psychologist, with a channel where she details a lot of serial killers, always emphasises that serial killers look first for vulnerability, and if the possible victim is not vulnerable, in most cases the killer can wait until there's both vulnerability and convenience (safety) for the killer. Attractiveness, or how a victim fits into the killer's chosen victim pool is a long way last. So I agree that whoever Jack was, he almost certainly had scouted locations and victims and not felt safe to act. It goes a little bit of the way to explain the increased savageness with each victim.

I’m impressed with your use of the words attractive & vulnerable. Like most psychopathic serial killers choose sex workers as victims because they lead the killer, known or unknown to them, to a private area which becomes the place where their life ends. That is an attractive reason to choose them.

I definitely would have loved to talk to your mom. I became fascinated with the JTR mystery in 1977. Decades of learning the old theories was extremely interesting. When new theories emerged it was exciting and I would think, “. The mystery has been solved! Then I would research and realizing that the facts excluded each theory. Still exciting Then the headlines, “ DNA proves Aaron Kosminski is JTR! DNA! I thought this has got to be it. Once again, I was wrong. That was the turning point for me. I decided that we might never know but that we could prove JTR wasn’t. Renewed energy! Then I came across House of Lechmere. Wow, here was a theory grounded in verifiable facts. I really dove in and became more and more interested because I could NOT discount Charles Allen Lechmere. Pure excitement! Charles Allen Lechmere is Jack the Ripper. Absolutely no doubt in my mind. That's where I'm at. I think if I were on a jury I'd perhaps vote him guilty there. But for me it's at present just a touch too far to make him both Jack the Ripper who killed everyone else and the Torso murderer. But he could have been. He could have been.... I've got much more to research and think about. But re Polly, the evidence against him I think is just too strong. There's just no time to fit anyone else in who killed her before he got to her and loitered for a while before Paul arrives. And then her blood only starts to flow when they've left and by the time the cops arrive. Her face is warm. There's no one else around, at all. If it's not Lechmere, it's practically impossible it was someone else. There just isn't the time. And I think this is often overlooked also, but there is really no NEED to insert anyone else into that picture BEFORE Lechmere gets to Polly. Why the need to insert someone else in BEFORE he is with her, when the evidence already makes it look very likely that there's no time for anyone else to be with her before he gets to her? We only look for another individual, one whom we all know as Jack the Ripper, because we've been indoctrinated to assume that it must have been someone else before Cross/Lechmere gets to her. But if we know nothing of a Jack the Ripper, hearing all the evidence here puts Lechmere as the prime suspect and the likely killer. 1. We know Lechmere was with Polly for a while before Paul arrives. Paul heard no footsteps and saw no one ahead of him from his house during that walk. Lechmere himself says he left home at 3.30 and it only takes 7 minutes. Paul gets to the street at precisely 3.45. Even if we're being very generous, Lechmere has to account for a good few minutes alone with Polly. And the reality is that he could have been with her for a lot longer, maybe even as much as 18 minutes. There's no way he just arrives into the scene, finds her and then immediately hears Paul. That scene never happened, it's a myth. 2. So the question is what's he doing with what we all know is a dead and mutilated body for at least a few minutes alone? Well, let's assume he enters the street and the Ripper hears him and runs. Lechmere sees nothing and hears nothing. He finds the body, and let's assume the throat has been cut by the Ripper within the last minute or two (that's probably being very generous, in timing). So the victim has already been bleeding from that very deep and wide wound for a few minutes by the time Lechmere arrives. Then we know Lechmere is with her for a few minutes alone. Then Paul enters the street and takes a minute or two to come to the body. Even IF this highly unlikely scenario took place, where we have inserted a third man (I.e. The Ripper) by this point I think it's obvious that blood would be visible. 3. Only, it's not. Neither man saw any blood. 4. But when the cop arrives a few minutes later, he's starting to see blood. And the blood gets worse from there. We haven't even mentioned the highly significant fact that this is the only victim who is clearly covered up, whose wounds are intentionally hidden from sight. Including the huge neck wound. So, although I'm not certain about this, it looks highly likely to me that Lechmere was the last person with Polly whilst she was alive.

One thing about Edward Stow’s research is that it is verifiable. You and I, if we had the inclination and time, can look up the facts that he presents. It’s all public information. Edward entered the JTR world only at the bequest of a descendant of Charles Lechmere. She became interested when a genealogist study revealed that Charles Cross was actually Charles Lechmere. Edward delved in expecting to find facts that would remove Charles as a suspect and set her mind at ease. He found the opposite and the rest is history.

@@jamescorlett5272 No on Maggie. I did have a tía Maggie, short for Maguita. Her name was not pronounced in the English way. My real name is Margaret but family call me Margarita so I’ve adopted it in my old age. I am honored that you have associated my name with Susan as I respect her very much, and would very much like to meet her. That is unlikely as I have retired to live in the quiet little town of Belen, New Mexico. (Belen translates to Bethlehem.) Susan Clapp Lechmere is an Englishwoman who is at the moment hard at work on Edward Stow’s next video. She is the one who contacted Edward to clear Lechmere’s name after the genealogy study revealed that there was no existing Charles Allen Cross at the address he gave at the inquest. Genealogists examined the landlord’s records and discovered that Charles Allen Lechmere resided at that address. Charles. Cross did not exist. Edward looked into the matter expecting to set her mind at ease but instead uncovered a wealth of information about CAL. What most impressed me is the 114 documents, (which includes the landlord records.) I haven’t checked if there are additional documents in evidence but I expect that number has increased. CAL always used his name whenever he interacted with authorities. The two exceptions being his involvement at Mary Ann “Polly” Nichols and when he killed the little boy by accident. As for me, I am a retired secondary educator who taught the sciences in Albuquerque, NM. I partnered my school program, School within a School with Sandia National Labs as well as authored technical writing for an Educators Journal. It likely would be boring to a layman such as yourself but it did garner me a bit of nationwide attention in the nineties. I also dabbled in poetry. Google History of Santa Fe, New Mexico records and my name, Margaret Palladino to find my poetry. I am especially proud of my poem, El Festival de Otoño. It made the front page and I have been informed that it is read at the festival. All that is old history as I now enjoy my well deserved retirement in the country. I did write something a few years ago. Pick up a copy of “The Monkees Then and Now volume 2, International Edition.” Well then, if I have not yet convinced you that I am not Susan, then I never will. If you would like to converse with Susan, just reply to any of her comments on Jack the Ripper threads. I assume you are English as well, (I apologize if I am mistaken), and perhaps Susan might consider a meetup. I wouldn’t think so as you have been quite insulting and juvenile. You have chosen to publicly represent yourself as a negative, argumentative, uneducated man and I myself would not care to meet you.

Another excellent edition, Edward. Phillips was almost certainly correct about the time of death. JTR did not meet, kill and mutilate in morning daylight. He used the darkness as part of his tool. That was his MO. Not only that, but seeing as he didn't wash his bloody hands in the yard (before walking off in broad daylight among increasing throngs of people in the daylight) it can only be because it was too dark to have seen that the yard had such facilities, which it did. Richardson was fishy and added details later on and probably didn't even look properly into the yard, while Long and Cadosch don't add up in times. Long must have had superhuman memory to be able to identify a dead body on a slab days after she merely walked quickly past her on the street.

An interesting fact is that Mary Ann Street/Pinchin Street and the adjacent area was apparently a very rough area when Lechmere would have lived there. I've read a newspaper article from the early 1870's that refers to the area as 'Tiger Bay' and perhaps Lechmeres opinion towards prostitutes was formed as a youth living in the midst of a 'red light' area.

In the whole of the East end of London, this guy walks down Hanbury Street, right? And of course, that isn't all. I'm sorry it might have been, Christer Holmgren, himself, or someone else who wryly stated, something along the lines of, well if Charles lechmere isn't Jack the ripper, he's the luckiest man in London to have likely passed by pretty much every crime scene within moments of the weekday murders, seen and heard nothing, and avoided getting murdered himself for being a witness.

I have watched all three episodes Edward and found them truly fascinating. Further backing Christer Holmgren's excellent work. These videos are superb and it has to be Lechmere. The case against him is overwhelming. And the link to the Thames Torso Murders I was completely unaware of. That was a real shock. The fact a torso was found on the site of one of his Mothers previous dwellings, surely cannot be a coincidence. There is only one question I have and you may have been asked this before, so please excuse a repeat question , if that is the case. Why did he stop ? And stop so suddenly ? The only other serial killer to have stopped as suddenly, that I know of, is The Zodiac. It would be great to get your take on this Edward, and anyone else commenting here. Working hours of an 1888 cart driver. Was he committed to start at a certain time or did he just get paid for the hours he worked? Did start times depend on what loads were to be delivered that day? Would a driver who had worked for a company for decades have some flexibility as to when he started, especially a very assertive and bold senior employee who might have been more akin to a manager of younger staff than solely a driver? Was he senior enough to have keys to the depot and let himself in at any time? We may have all encountered long established employees who seem to get away with pleasing themselves as to what they do and when. How do we even know that Lechmere was meant to start work at four or is that just what he told the police? Was he even a full time employee or did he just do some work for Pickfords when business was slack at the family cat food factory? Some commenters on Lechmere seem to assume that an 1888 manual workplace was akin to a modern workplace with clocking in, clipboard wielding supervisors and officious HR procedures but I wonder if a canny, devious, nefarious cartman at a busy depot could disappear for an hour during his rounds or turn up late without anyone at his main HQ even noticing. As examples, Peter Sutcliffe, Dennis Nilsen and Gary Ridgway managed to combine serial homicide with regular employment for many years.

The fact that the Saturday night or bank holiday murders generally took place either much later or much earlier than the first 2 murders is a subject that deserves more attention. However the issue here is the Annie Chapman murder which appears to be an anomaly. As Saturday would have been a working day I presume. Was it a later start perhaps? Its seems to point towards a person having to be at work at 4am in the morning most days of the week and then able to relax and commit his crimes at a /earlier later timetable on his day's off...... by which I mean he would not have had to go to work afterwards. And therefore time would not have been a consideration leaving him free to kill either much earlier or much later than his typical 3.20-3.30 exit from his house to go to work. Now correct me if I am wrong but days off account for 3 out of the 5 canonical murders... Polly Anne Nicholls - Friday August 31st 1888. TOD 3.30-3.40 AM estimate. Working day Annie Chapman - Saturday 8th September. TOD 4.30-5.45 AM estimate. Working day ? How does this fit into a 4 AM work start? Elizabeth Stride - Sunday 30th September. TOD 1.00 AM Holiday Catherine Eddowes - Sunday 30th September TOD 1.44 AM. Holiday Mary Jane Kelly - Friday 9th November. Lord Mayor's Day celebration. TOD 3 to 9 hours before 10.45 AM discovery. From 2.45AM to 8.45AM. I think this is an important piece of circumstantial evidence that should point the finger at Charles Allen Lechmere and quite equally point it away from most other suspects..... There are however two potential counter arguments. The Annie Chapman timeline doesn't fit a typical workday. Unless Saturdays were different And the only murder obviously committed on his way to work would be the first one.

  • @fiachramaccana280

Haha ok you may have explained the time issue with the Annie Chapman murder..... I should have waited until the end. Hence the broader point remains now that you have a possible explanation for the later time of the second one.

541 / 5 000 Thank you very much for a very good episode! Listening to it, I thought of something that might be another aspect that points to Charles Lechmere as Jack the Ripper. The fact that he, if he is Jack, is disturbed in the act of murdering Mary Ann Nicols, may have meant that for the next murder he will have a more private crime scene, and thus find the backyard where the second murder takes place. Whereas if Lechmere isn't Jack, this other killer won't have the same bad feeling about being disturbed in the act, and wouldn't necessarily find such a private place.

Did Pickford's operate canal boats as well in the 19th century? There was an especially absorbing and really brilliant episode of Inspector Morse where Morse, stuck in the hospital awaiting test results on his severely 'upset' tummy, is given a book covering Victorian cases of crime by the writer herself, and as he reads he begins to see problems, not only with the author's summation of one of the homicide cases she covers, but with the actual police investigation of the killing as well as the subsequent trial. One of the non-human characters in the piece is a 'Pickford flyboat', and the (fictitious) case was known as, 'The Oxford Canal Murder' Interesting if there is a connection there.

Love this channel and the theory about Lechmere. Hugely impressed with the amount of detail. One question I have though, if he was on the way to work and that was the only time he had to kill, how would he make time to go to work on Mary Jane Kelly the way that he did? Surely that would have taken a long long time, would he have done that on the way to work? Wouldn’t he have to leave his house earlier and risked all the explaining that might have taken to his wife? Also, he would have potentially had to plan her murder in advance.

I definitely agree that the victims met the killer in a busier area before proceeding to the murder site, in fact it almost sounded like you read my comment on an earlier video. It would be good to address the issue of the murder weapon, Lechmere would have had to leave home with the weapon because he felt there may be an opportunity to kill and then keep it concealed after the fact. Not impossible but not simple either. To my knowledge there is no mention of him carrying anything ( like a lunch box) so he must have had it on his person and we're not talking about a small pocket knife.
