@@RandomPerson-ui3xv "he didn't wanna waste the bullet on will cause he was saving it to kill barbossa" That's the thing. The movie starts out introducing Jack as some random clown on a boat, while in reality he was on a hunt for a large scale pirate, and it ties into the reveal in the finale.

Story behind this: Hans and his team could not figure out how to score this scene, trying many approaches but none working. His underling Ramin Djawadi, then the coffee boy, asked Hans if he could give it a go on his composing rig after everyone had left for the night. The next day everyone came back, and what Ramin had written fit the scene perfectly and solved the problem. It flowed with the action as if the director had setup the scene around the music. Hans told Ramin "You will never make me another coffee again". And so the Game of Thrones composer's career was born. This is such a great scene if one only pays attention to details. Jack knows Will is a prominent fencer from the moment they touch blades, yet doesn't know for sure if he can take him. Regardless, since Jack has Norrington's guards on his tail, he tries to avoid conflicts that may stall him. By testing Will's footwork, his real intention is to make Will move away from the entrance -- which Will hinders once more. Hence the line: 'Once again, you're between me and my way out,'. These movies are so great, and you can watch them time again and still notice new details.

I love this comment, and it's years old now, but I just want to reiterate that Jack is always focused on the objective, and that's something Will has to learn from him. Will is stuck in "fight like an aristocrat" mode and Jack is always in "get it done" mode. They are just about equally matched, with Jack barely having the edge over Will, showing that he has something to teach Will throughout the story. Will's legitimate skills with Jack's improvisation skills makes an unstoppable duo, and they are able to take a lightly manned vessel with just the two of them.

This is one of my favourite sword fights in any film. The choreography is great fun without resorting to idiotic tropes and poor swordsmanship. Jack has an agenda throughout the scene. He has no intention of killing Will, and just wants to escape. After threatening him doesn't work, he manipulates him through "testing" his skill as a fencer to get Will to move out of the way of his escape route. And then we have a really nice setpiece with all of the moving parts and verticality to the fight, lots of fun stuff happening using the environment, great cinematography. And the icing on the cake is the score. It's fantastic throughout but the part where they first start fighting and the sword clashes are even timed with the beat of the music (listen from 1:13 to 1:15 - fantastic)

Funny enough, Jack is giving him some complements here. The irony that in this social class driven society it's only a pirate that can see the skills Will has and complement him.
" You think this is wise, boy? Crossing blades with a pirate? " Damn, I love that line.
You realize the importance of this scene later, beyond how fun it was. Will is one of the few that could match Jack for creative on-the-fly thinking... at least, in terms of battle tactics. His personality and moral values are much different than Jack's, so he doesn't automatically think about double-crossing (until he gets to know Jack better, lol). That is usually the case with Jack's opponents, or that they aren't as smart as him, and he takes advantage of that. . But Will *is* smart, and willing to do what it takes to succeed, if neccessary. But unlike the bad guys, his motivation is never selfish. You see this again when he traps Jack into agreeing to give away the Navy ship they stole to Anamaria, whose boat Jack stole earlier, because he needed Jack to acquire a crew to help him rescue Elizabeth. . It's why they worked so well playing off each other. They were both very smart, just very different, and Will of course was younger and more naive, which was great comedy fuel.

Apparently, this scene is the moment that Ramin Djawadi (composer of "Game Of Thrones" among other things) caught one of his professional breaks. He was working as some sort of assistant for Hans Zimmer, literally making coffee. Hans and the whole crew were feeling a bit stuck on the score for "Pirates". One night, Ramin asked Hans if he could "use his rig" and try to crack a scene that they couldn't solve after everybody else went home. The next day, he played them the music behind this scene and everybody immediately reacted positively.
You know, if Will and Jack had escaped unimpeded, and Dead man's chest had never happened, Will and Jack could have formed a mentor-student bond, or even a father-son bond.

When casting for the role of Will Turner, it was down to Orlando Bloom or Heath Ledger. Gore Verbinski chose Bloom, because he heard he was in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and felt he would be a more bankable choice. (at around 23 mins) During the swordfight scene between Jack Sparrow and Will Turner in the blacksmith shop, the clanging of their swords are just about in sync with the rhythm of the incidental music. (at around 26 mins) The substance sprayed on William Turner, after the sword fight between him and Captain Jack Sparrow, is actually powdered chocolate.

Not only that, but he also plans on killing Barbosa with that shot once the curse is lifted because of the mutiny he did to Jack before the movie events

I think it's not a test. Jack doesn't wanna go into prison that's why he pointed his gun at Will. And Jack already loaded his gun. If the old guy didn't smash his bottle on Jack's head, I'm sure he would shoot into Wills leg so he have to make the way free.
The only Hollywood movie in wish the fencing looks somewhat accurate, and it's a pirate fantasy movie!

No watch the duelist it's a better representation of fencing the movements are soo slow in these films a realistic duelist would last 20 seconds

Seriously one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history
Why can't movies nowadays be as good as this one!
I was 7 when this movie came out back in 2003. There was an official POTC website with short clips from the movie, and I would sit there and wait 20 minutes for my dial-up internet to buffer the video so I could watch this. Thank god for high speed internet.

DrSquidley me too. But, I was 6 years old, when this movie came out.
1:58 😂 Jackie what are you doing love? 😍🤣
1:13 I love how the sword sounds go along with the beat of the music
@2:34 "Who makes all these" always cracks me up xD
When Sparrow tried to escape for the 1st time, he left behind his hat.
One of the greatest duels of all time
Great sword fight, drama and comedy...what more can you ask for?
This is the most masterful display of an action sequence in modern day cinema
4:34 the fact that he said, "Please."
Man, Jack’s face when he gets his chain unstuck from the sword has me laughing
1:11 I’m in love w how the swords go w the music
amazing scene
"This shot is not meant for you." Can I just say how frickin powerful of a line that is?
I love how they’re constantly changing the terrain and how they fight despite it all taking place in the same room
forever a classic

Loved the scene as a child, lo the scene now
4:19 Sword:*Ight imma head out*
I cannot think about somebody breaking a bottle on jack without being regretfully reminded of the wretch
Just came here to hear the swords' sounds be in rhythm with the music.
At 1:14 the sound of the blades hitting each other matches with the music and it's so satisfying.
I like the part where Jack said “You fought well but I’m one of the Pirates of the Caribbean.”
The flashes of anguish on his face when Jack hears the ruckus at the (temporarily) blocked door of the men after him, and Will won't budge for either threats or even asking nicely (lol). He really doesn't want to kill anyone unnecessarily, but also, he *reaaaalllyy* doesn't want to hang -- especially before getting his revenge. . Kudos to Johnny Depp's acting skills here.
4:20-4:24 best part of this music
The music and sword clashing is excellent.
I like how the sound of the swords is in beat with the music
I love the bullet foreshadowing.
1:13 Notice the sound of the 2 swords connecting goes in time with the music for a few seconds 😳
2:15 "I'm outta here"

Another reason why Will is so good at this is because he's a pirate too.
This scene fills me with giddiness and joy. I love it sm!
Don't get me wrong i love this scene, the stunts, the music and the hurmor. but what is sad that at 0:17 Will sadly says "Right where i lfet you..." impling that his boss has a drinking problem. Before this scene we the viewers don't know much about Will let, we have seen him in a flashback as a child, then there was a scene where he sells the govenor a sword that he has created, then there was this sceace. Not only Will stands his ground with Jack but he he agains doesnt get the cedit for it, last secound his boss knocks out Jake when the gaurads finds them
