Jack Nicklaus v Tom Watson The Open Turnberry 1977

Спорт

From my sister site a little something different from Seve.
But if you like some vintage golf you cannot go too far wrong with this famous 'Duel in the Sun' at Turnberry. We join the masters playing the 12th hole on the final day. Again apologies for VHS quality.
Enjoy the 'fashions' of players and spectators alike and this ultimate battle of the giants of golf.

That's a sportsman, and a gentleman. Never crashed his car once being chased by his wife. Or without any help at all. You know who I'm talkin' 'bout... 😏 He said once, his father told him: "When a fellow beats you fair and square, you look him in the eye, shake his hand and sincerely congratulate him. Then, go out practice and practice like hell so you can beat him next time." That's Jack.

Watson hits it to 3 feet on the 18th with a one shot lead...Nicklaus is in the bushes an must swing looking through the brush down at the ball...Nicklaus somehow gets it to within 40 feet and Watson's caddy is already celebrating, Tom turned to his caddy and said, not yet, Jack is going to make this long putt, I feel it....Jack rolled it in center cut thus forcing Tom to make his 3 footer to win....golf at it's zenith...such talent, such sportsmanship, the great Hall of Famers going head to head....what a weekend

Many would say this was the greatest game of all time and only a fool would argue against them. There is nothing like it today. There are many factors to consider in what constitutes great golf, but there is no need to consider them when watching this. They were the two greats of the game. Truly fine golf which should be preserved for all time.

  • @ZoeTheCat

Iwastherein1969 Yes indeed. The equipment advantage is HUGE. When the ProV1 came out, I was absolutely astounded. But the irons as you correctly point out were the first big change. My first set in '75 was a set of Wilson Staffs. My swing had to be perfect to hit it flush. I now have Hogan Apex Blades. There are easier cavity backs out there (enormous sweet spot), but I prefer the blade look at address. I recently took my staffs & Persimmons out to the range. It was laughable. I don't think I ever hit a good shot from the entire bucket ;-) Naturally, my swing has changed, but your point is extremely well taken. The fact that Nicklaus & Watson could play using that equipment always blows my mind. The worst part of all is that the equipment made classic courses virtually obsolete over night. Cheers!

Stevo Baggio If you asked me in 1996, I would have said "absolutely not.' My rationale would have been that the fields continually get deeper and deeper every single year. Let's face it - The World #100 golfer is far closer to World #1 today than during the Nicklaus era. That's a bit insulting to Jack, but it is a fair argument. As the pool of players gets compressed, it simply becomes more difficult to win majors for any individual. Tiger blew that theory out of the water. Spieth is also on track. My answer today is...maybe ;-)

I still have a set of Titleist AC 108's from the 70's, They're actually pretty forgiving . But I still only hit them at the range not on the course, These guys were playing with persimmon woods and forged blades. Not nearly as forgiving as the stuff today. But they were still getting eagles. ANd as you say, the sweet spot was only about an inch wide, I had a tendency to hit out on the toe and sometimes after a round Id have blisters from the club turning in my hands.

Jack battled hall of famers for majors from the first year he turned pro. He has 19 second places in majors and losing to Watson here is not too shabby. His opponents never quit and neither did he. Look how he made Watson sweat it out to win. That recovery shot at 18 could only have been made by him or tiger. Same with the the putt on 18 and that roar walking up 18 was Tigeresque. Or should I say Nicklausesque.

Remember seeing this back in the day. It was watching the likes of this on free to air BBC that had kids flooding onto the golf courses (in Scotland anyway) trying to be like these guys. Now with everything on sky, and game is mega bucks to play, youngsters dont want to take up the game in anything like the same numbers, sadly club golf is going downhill rather rapidly. On a medal day I see very few players under the age of 40 and clubs closing or decline in membership. Very sad. Authorities too busy making money from Pro game to care it seems. Reap what you sow R&A.

Player said Hogan was the best: Hogan missed at least 30 majors either because of his service in the war and his car accident. Nicklaus said Hogan and Trevino were the best ball strikers of all time. In my opinion, if someone ranked the top 25 greats of all time, and then put them each in their prime according to their stats, and then had them go head to head in at least 100 tournaments, it would be impossible to know with 100 percent certainty how they would rank 1-25 after all the matches were played. I would say they would need to play head to head in at least 100 tournaments and gather points like a FED EX points set up.

The strength in depth is considerably better now than it was 40 odd years ago. Back then only a dozen or fewer golfers had any realistic chance of winning a major. As not many players could play professionally due to the lack of money in the game. Tom Watson won £10k for winning this tournament, which equates to $40k in today's money. Compare that to today where Molinari won $1.9m for winning the tournament last year.
