1977 … I was a senior in high school. I remember watching this broadcast with these legendary announcers. I was a big Watson fan. Forty-six years ago… sometimes it seems like forever, but most of the time it seems like last night.

Being the golf nerd I am. Been watching from the '69 Masters to here. It has been really interesting to see the subtle changes each year that CBS makes with their coverage. Also the equipment/apparel changes the players make year to year.

Announcers - 1977 11 & 12: Pat Summerall 13: Jack Whitaker 14: Ken Venturi 15: Ben Wright 16: Jim Thacker 17: Frank Glieber 18: Vin Scully ALSO -- You may happen to notice the quirky audio. This was the byproduct of a nationwide coax cable/microwave relay system used by CBS-ABC-NBC to transmit their programming across the country since the 1950s. In early 1978, improvements were introduced which gave the audio a more natural quality. By the 1980s, the networks were transmitting their programs nationwide with satellites. Even with the quirky audio, Frank Glieber's call of Tom Watson's birdie on 17 is the most beautiful thing you'll ever hear.

I am not sure what you are speaking of as "complete lack of sporting ethics when captain of the US Ryder Cup team." If you are speaking of the outburst when JLeonard made the putt that was not on Crenshaw. If you are going to pin the outburst on him then he redeemed himself when PStewart conceded his match with CMontgomery when the Cup was secured. All the players back then were true men. Thhey had personalities, and they had emotions. Unlike modern players who act, talk, and dress the same, like robots.

I think ALL the caddies were black, in those days. Could black fans even purchase tickets to watch the Masters back then?

Vin is well prepared but so much so at times I thought he spoke a bit too much. With golf, I like some quiet more so than baseball and other sports. That said, he’s the King of broadcasting and will be so for many decades ahead.

In those days you had to use the caddies from the Augusta National. It wasn’t till later that players could use their own caddies
