Jack Lemmon great interview with Walter Matthau 1987 Part 2

Ойын-сауық

The first interview was so good but time had run out when Walter came on towards the end. It was decided that the interview would be extended and this treat was kept for a later date. Ounce Walter starts talking he comes out with some really funny stories. It finishes with a nice piece of piano music that Jack plays that he composed himself. Two great stars sorely missed

These two are treasures. So glad we have this and other interviews with two of the most talented people in show biz. Matthau is in a class of his own. The deadpan attitude is a scream. And sweet, lovable Lemmon just obviously loves his friend and acting partner in so many of their great films. I really mourned the passing of Jack Lemmon. Blue Mongoose Be embarrassed not! We, "WE" have not deteriorated. We are blessed to recognise that we lived through or at least over-lapped THE BEST... The Golden Age where talent, either natural or hard earned by hard work, was what the audiences wanted & the entertainment industry employed..often exploited to present to a very quality-aware audience. Crap never got past the stage door Commissionaire. Unfortunately, lots of real quality got through but they were surplus..just couldn't be used. Today, can you imagine letting in the likes of Ed Sheeran to anything other than sweeping, checking fire extinguishers and filling toilet role dispensers? You wouldn't look in his direction if you passed him on the stairs. The embarrassment is theirs, not yours. Different audiences, different world, wrong people running it!

He was the most understated, fantastic comedic actor. I think the funniest was in The Odd Couple with Lemon, and he was also fantastic as the dentist in Cactus Flower with Ingrid Bergman in 1969. He didn't have to try, he just was so very great and intelligent without having to force anything. Hard to find anyone today like him.

The Odd Couple is one of my all time favourite films, along with Some Like It Hot and The Life Of Brian and The Blues Brothers. But any one of their films, either together or not i'd watch any day of the week!

Movies these days, no one cares about the characters. The character development is not there. When films were great it was because you had an interest in the plot and too many explosions or loud noises were a distraction in some ways. If something subtle happened it was important. Now if a character falls off a skyscraper no one really cares much.

@@johnrobinson1762 That's absolutely right. You only need to look at remakes. They have a blue print and still the characters lack that special something. The best example I can think of (for now) is the movie "Sabrina". The original had Humphrey Bogart and William Holden - two massive stars and a fairly new comer Audrey Hepburn. And the movie focused on her, unlike the remake which was basically focusing on Harrison Ford.

These stars should have been given more time to reminence. There were too many memories to recall. They were very funny. Walter is extremely funny. He had a fantastic memory. Rip to both. Thanks utube

Thank you both Jack and Walter, two guys that add a realism to acting that you don't see anymore. They are so natural, like talking to an old friend. Jack is a very talented writer and composer. Walter would have made a good President of the United States, he has this manner of speaking like, Reagan. Some great films, Some like it Hot, The Out of Towners, King Creole, The Odd Couple, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Apartment, The Wackiest Ship in the Army,Irma La Douce, The Days of Wine and Roses,Grumpy Old Men..... etc. I love you guys

Yes lucjy you. And I was lucky enough to meet Walter in Liverpool in 1999, in a hotel barr, when I went to my grandads funeral. The barman kept saying how they get really famous people in there. I did not believe him until Walter walked in. Nice guy in the flesh, humble despite being one of the most famous actors of his generation. I spoke to to him for about half an hour. A week later he died back in US.

Walter has always been my favourite wise-cracking cranky Yankee. Jack is a lovely man, you can just tell, his music was very expressive. PML at so much of their stuff, identify I think is the right word. Two amazing personalities, both entirely real.

Absolutely loved this quality interview Parkinson gave to Walter Matthau one of the best and Jack Lemmon the best. And I will always appreciate whenever Walter Matthau speaks of Elvis it's always in high regard that's says a lot of the man Walter Matthau and I did love King Creole that was one of the few movies at Elvis really showed acting ability he should have had more opportunity and more serious roles Elvis knew what he was doing if they had given half the chance but as I understand Hollywood looks at the the bottom line only not regard the artist potential ability
