Bro brought ammo for the entire team
Russian tank Designer: Wait, the crew is suppoused to survive?
Came here to say this: A russian/soviet study of destroyed tanks showed that the ammo NOT in the autoloader was the primary cause of the ammo detonating. as that ammo, scattered around the rest of the tank, is the easiest to hit, compared to the ammo in the autoloader, which is in one of the hardest to hit areas of the tank. The T-72's Mechanized ammo rack is also lower profile than the T-64 or T-80's. The T-90M also has armor protection on its ammo rack. But overall, hitting the ammo of a tank usually causes it to throw its turret, or blow open the hatches and look like a volcano. This is NOT exclusive to soviet tanks. This can happen to any tank.
@Oblivisci........

Being inside any tank during an internal explosion sounds absolutely terrifying
While yes most western MBTs have blowout panels, they still store most of the ammunition inside the hull so they’re just as likely to have a catastrophic ammonia detonation as most tanks Russia uses. Also, weather or not such an ammo detonation happens isn’t really that important because if the ammo in the hull is hit then the crew is most likely already splashed all over the inside of the tank.

There's a bit of nuance required here because most Western MBTs have blowout panels but few are fully blowout protected. The only two Western tanks I'm aware of being fully blowout protected are the Leclerc and Abrams. The British Challenger 2 and Italian Ariete don't feature any blowout panels at all. The Leopard 2 stores roughly half it's ammo in the turret and the other half in the front left side of the hull but only the ammunition in the turret is blowout protected.

Turret loss? No. Turret toss
Haha, his turt go *pop*
When it comes to current Russian/post-Soviet tanks, its also important to mention that they are equipped with full-caliber HE shells - something what western tanks typically do not have. AFAIK 120mm standardized NATO ammunition doesnt even feature a full-caliber HE shell. The current system of blowout panels for ammo stowage would not be able to handle the overpressure of a full-caliber HE explosion inside, and despite likely not leading to a turret toss it would still kill the crew and eliminate the vehicle.

There are probably no other tank models that have had as many turrets thrown as the Russians with autoloaders
Do people not understand that in most tanks the destruction of the ammo stowage will cause the crew to die as well? It doesn't matter what happens to the turret after this explosion, the crew is dead, and the vehicle is destroyed. This will happen to any tank without blowout panels, it doesn't matter if it's a Leopard 2 or a T-72.
@YungQuant25
3 ай бұрын
In a Leopard 2 or Abrams, ammo cook-offs aren't nearly as lethal. Blow-out panels direct the explosion of the ammunition away from the crew, and out the roof, protecting the crew. The tank will need to be repaired, and it will be operationally dead until it can be, but the crew will survive.
@VelikanVLK
3 ай бұрын
@@YungQuant25 Pretty sure the Abrams is very well protected with the blowout panels, but for example the Turkish Leopard-2s got destroyed because their hull ammo stowage does not have blowout panels, You can see in the aftermath pictures the front of the hull is pretty much gone because of the detonation of the ammo, and sadly the crew did not survive.
