There's another You Tube clip from almost 20 years later with Jack Benny and Mel Blanc with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Jack says the writers put the bit about an English horse in the script to play a joke on Mel. They thought he'd be stumped when he was asked to do an English horse. Instead, Mel said nothing and just went and did the English horse in the dress rehearsal as you see it here.

I live in the UK. Only recently discovered these fantastic Jack Benny programmes on you tube. I remember watching Jack on tv, many years ago as a child. Mum and dad always watched him. I’m thrilled to be able to relive childhood memories. Seeing Mel Blanc in person, instead of just a name on the credits, now that’s a real bonus.
This was when radio and tv were the greatest.
The Gropff routine is an absolute classic.
Mel Blanc was a truly legendary, versatile, multi-talented voice artist-he voiced Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales; Sylvester, Tweety-among many others.

It's clear that Jack thought Mel was just funny...I love the way he always cracked Jack up.
We of my age (77) know how lucky we were growing up with the beginning of television and the history of what I just watched and so many more. We all got B&W movies from the beginning of that as standard fare.
The English horse 🐎 was a joke by Jack and the staff and Mel came up with the British dialect to create the distinctive sounds. Pure gold these two guys . Live free or Die 🇺🇸.

Jack Benny & Mel Blanc. Legends of comedy. 😁
My face literally hurts from smiling through this whole bit.

sadly when mel passed he took all these characters with him .
When everything was done live, you had awesome shows like these. With real joy and laughter. Everything is so fake and manufactured now.

I love Jack Benny's looks. And of course Mel Blac is the best
What an honor for Mel to have the comedian's comedian, Jack Benny, trying to stifle his laughter at his performance. Happened just about every time they interacted on the show. You can tell Jack loved working with Mel. Jack was the quintessential straight man whose expertise was making other people get laughs at his expense.
Legends both. And yes, great friends and it shows in their laughter. Such fun to watch.
That was funny when Mr.Mel Blanc imitated the Saint Bernard, ending with a hiccup, and also the English horse😊.wado for putting this on here for other people to enjoy Good, Clean Family Comedy.wado,Ann Benson.

The English horse was one of many "pranks" by the writers. They would regularly write in outlandish voices to see if they could trip him up.
Both had perfect timing.
These two gentlemen were just brilliant.
Legends both RIP

That was my thought watching this as well. "Stanley" comes out and he is getting laughs just by his very presence, before he ever uses his voice. That's talent, charisma, star power. RIP Mel and Jack
I love how Jack has to work so hard not to crack up!
Every time Mel describes what talents he does, he sounds like he's using the original voice of Barney Rubble.

When Mel was doing the dog imitations, I pictured the cartoons in which I heard them; like the dog with Foghorn Leghorn, and the puppy with Claude the cat.
Great to see him do all the dog "voices" you only hear on the LT's. Also love the "Rubber Band" he does here as "Electric Organ" and Jack's car. 😀😎🤓✌🏻✌🏻
Mel Blanc is such a legend!
As Larry the Cable Guy would say....."now that's funny right there" !! Two legends.
Where r these showman today? Outstanding....

So much great TV through the 50's and 60's I'm glad I got to grow up with it, I don't know what happened from the 70's on up. They got raunchy I think.
Thanks so much for posting this. I had the episode on VHS years ago and lost it. The "electric organ" bit cracks me up every time. I don't remember seeing Mel do that anywhere else.

I always wondered what that "eh-eh-eh" sound effect was called, and now I know it's electric organ.
Notice how guest always dressed presentable, not half naked & like you just came from the dump😂
I’ve never seen them almost laugh so hard.
2:40 imagine mel doing improv, wiping out his face with his entire tie when jack break character & bursted out laughing
My two favorite people from this era!. My grandparents introduced me to them and their work and I love them so much for that!. I watched Looney Tunes growing up and now I'm introducing my nephew to it and he loves it. I pray that they're both resting in peace and making everyone in heaven laugh their a**es off. 🙏🙏
Thanks for this. A priceless clip. At the end, Jack Benny rightly describes Mel Blanc as a 'priceless talent'. He was the best, and most underrated, actor in Hollywood.
