This completely violates the intention and spirit of the award. The award was meant to reward those who became great but were unexpected to be. Players like Jimmy Butler or Pascal Siakam rightfully earned it because we didn't see it coming. Ja Morant was drafted #2 because we expected him to be great, and he won ROY because he proved he was on the way to becoming great. Imagine Lebron or Durant having won this award just because they improved between their rookie year and 3rd season, we'd call it crazy!

I love Ja and I think he has improved a lot but noone expected Garland, Murray or Poole to make as big of an improvement as they did this season. So maybe the trophy should have gone to one of them. That being said, Ja will get into All NBA 2nd team minimum though.

Noone thought Garland or Murray would be allstars. Noone thought Poole would be playing good enough to be a Splash Nephew to Curry and Klay.

Ja is amazing and I love him but he's an MVP candidate. This award should have went to Jordan Poole or Tyrese Maxey.

It’s generally been used to highlight lesser known players who have been able to work hard and earn a starting position or similar through their exceptional and unexpected play. It is also used to highlight fringe starters who make a big leap to superstar status. Ja doesn’t fit in either of those categories and taking away the one award that’s geared towards the lower draft picks is unfortunate considering Ja just won rookie of the year.

If you don’t understand ideas of linguistic relativity and believe that generalized phrases have specifically defined definitions then it seems like you have a very high school level knowledge about language. The more you learn about language, the less clear language becomes and saying what you said is a great example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

How are you making sense? Didn’t they go from making the playoffs through the play-in, to having the second best record in the league? I know they won a bunch of games with out him, but he was in the MVP discussion for a min too. Luka is incredible, but they’ll never win over 50 games no matter how good he plays.

A lottery pick improving is expected. No one is expecting a lottery pick to become an average role player.. they’re expected to be stars. Just because he made the leap sooner than expected doesn’t mean he’s deserving of MIP. There are so many more deserving guys who actually made unexpected leaps and aren’t lottery picks.

Let’s say for instance a player like Josh Primo develops into an All Star - is he deserving of MIP despite being a lottery pick? Yes, considering I don’t know anyone who is looking at him and predicting that trajectory. There are other awards for rewarding a player like Ja who improved like he did.. most improved should be reserved for guys who made bigger improvements based on what most people expected them to be.

No disrespect but Jordan Poole should’ve not just been in the top 3 for the award, he should’ve won it. Ja was the second pick, and he was always great and while he improved from last year, his improval was nothing compared to Poole. Dude went from being in the G-League just last year to starting on Golden State in which they had the second best record for most of the season. He went to a fully healthy Miami and beat them without Steph, Klay, or Draymond he filled Klay’s role very well for most of the season. I know playoffs don’t count towards it, but it only goes to show you how he was the one who REALLY deserves it.

Jordan Poole’s per 36 does not improve at all. Meanhwhile Dejounte and Ja improved in almost everything while playing basically the sam minutes as last season. Just because someone is in the g league last season doesn’t mean they are trash last season because he only played like 2 games last season. Most guys who are coming back from injury play in the gleague but that doesn’t mean they’re trash like Klay four months ago.

Bane took a HUGE leap and became the main reason why Grizzlies were so successful plus the fact he was one of the best shooters in the league this season. Bane should have been on that list.

I know Ja was already great last year, but he still deserves this award. There can be an argument made for the others, but Ja has the most improvement in PPG and PER. He shouldn't be disqualified just because we expect him to be great. Victor Oladipo also won MIP as a 2nd pick in the draft.

As a Cavs fan, I wanted Garland to win. Not sure about Ja though because I think we all knew he could be a potential MVP candidate. Ja went from having 19 points bee game to around 27 points per game. He had a higher point improvement than Poole. He also has a higher assist AND rebounds improvement. It dosnt matter what you already have, it matters what you did this season to improve. Say that their stats restart at the start of the season. started at 0 points, stats everything. Their stats only start this season. everyone would say ja should get it cause he HAD the most improvement.
