J111 sailboat tour - Retroboat E32 - with

According to designer Alan Johnstone, the brief for the new 36ft 6in J/111 one-design was for a boat that he and the rest of the J/Boats crew would want to sail-and it shows.
During a recent daysail off Newport, Rhode Island, hull #1 reveled in picture perfect sailing conditions, with winds out of the east in the mid to high teens. Sailing to windward, the boat was balanced and easy to drive through the moderate swells. Off the wind, the boat lit up under a massive, but easy to handle A-sail.
Narrow beam and a deep, high-aspect rudder make the boat easy to control, even when it’s on its ear. A bulb keel drawing 7ft 2in provides the righting moment to control the 751ft2 of working sail and 1,410-ft2 spinnaker. Tacking, even in the chop off Newport Neck, was effortless, with precision helm control throughout and never a doubt about making it onto the other tack. In the puffs, the boat accelerated like flicking a switch.
This is a boat that looks impressive just sitting at the dock. The stem is plumb, so much so that in profile it almost looks as though there is a hint of tumblehome. The stern is also nearly vertical, with minimal overhang, in the interest of maximizing sailing length.

The J/111 design has stayed really modern for being 10+ years old. There's a very active fleet in the Chesapeake; I sailed with one for a season a few years ago. Review that performance cat one slip over next please!

Just a few months ago I traded my 2004 Ben 36.7 for a 2011 J/111 and already it's "retro!" When one of my cew saw it for the first time she commented "wow, she looks fast just sitting in the slip." This one looks faster because she lacks the Facnor furler (good choice) and has the optional black pulpit and stern rails, very sharp. That wheel looks fantastic too, I really want one of those. Pipe berths are a factory option but mine came with aftermarket. If you have a few sails on board and are at dock it's handy to toss them on the pipe berths, but then you can't sit on the lower bunks and lean back. I'll probably remove the pipe berth from one side. Other options include opening gates, shore power, refrigeration in the ice box, a hot water heater and a propane range. One very cool standard feature you didn't mention is that there is a rope ladder that pulls right out of the transom for getting people back on board. I'll bet many owners don't even know about it. Thanks for the great video, it was cool seeing what they look like when they are all clean inside and don't have sails piled everywhere ;-)

This is absolutely NOT "the perfect boat for people that go day sailing". It is 36 feet of storage and/or mooring with bowsprit that tends to leak inside. And people are supposed to leave it for longer periods and just use it for a day or one weekend every now and then? That's not the concept.
