It was in the late 1960s that a controversy arose about the Bombay films. The 'Angrezi Hatao' movement was at its peak, and it was demanded by some that the titles and credits of the films be shown in Hindi only. Sahir Ludhianawi made a statement that if English was removed from the titles, it should then be shown in Urdu, the language most of the films were written in, anyway. Statements were made for and against this. A letter signed by many prominent Urdu writers of the Bombay film industry, like Rajender Krishan, Mahender Singh Bedi, Kaifi, Hasrat, Jan Nisar, Krishan Chander, and others, was published in 'Shama' magazine to support Sahir. One prominent name that I noticed was missing was that of Majrooh Sultanpuri. I was a student at IIT Kharagpur at that time. I wrote a letter to Majrooh Sahib, enquiring about the absence of his name in that letter. To my surprise, a response to my letter came on letterhead monogramed with golden MS. It was written in a beautiful Urdu calligraphic style ('Khush-Khat'). It explained, in an elderly tone, that he kept himself out of this controversy because he believes that the language of the movies was neither Hindi nor Urdu. It was what Gandhiji and Premchand called Hindustani. He is an Urdu poet, but for the films, he uses a combination of Urdu and Hindi to conform to the language of the masses. As a 19-year-old, I was very excited to receive a letter from a stalwart of the Bombay film industry, but I was realistic enough to know that since he must be receiving hundreds of fan letters, the responses to which must be mass produced by his secretary. A few years ago, I saw an interview on KZread in which he showed some pages of his notebook. They were in the same handwriting that I had seen in that 1969 letter. I am now convinced that the response to my letter was written by the great poet himself.
