J-Tool (Mini) - Homemade Respectful Entry Tool for Firefighters

The Mini J-Tool is becoming one of my favourite tools for respectful (forcible) entry. It works great on Adams Rite Deadlatch locks (I call them Slam Latches… when the door slams shut, it locks). I notice these locks in entry foyer doors into apartment buildings. People who live in the building have a key, or a key fob to let them in, and to exit they just push on the paddle to retract the latch to let them out. I found the short style handle version on a commercial unit in my 1st run area.
The Mini J-Tool can be inserted between the door and the frame to manipulate the push paddle or handle to retract the latch to gain entry in case of an emergency. An issue that may arise is if the gap between the door and frame is too tight to insert the tool. You could use a pry bar, or wedge to increase the gap.
I fabricated this out of an old election sign that people put on their front lawns. I found the thicker diameter metal works best. In the past I’ve tried old car antennas, and bike spokes to make this tool, but those metals were to flimsy and would bend. This tool is light, and fits in your bunker pants pocket.

If one were to simply take the rolling brush off a paint roller, the remainder would be the same darn thing.

I hope you have enough common courtesy, and good sense to alert police officials that any one caught with this tool, not a firefighter or police officer, they should be arrested for possession of burglary tools.

It's only illegal if you plan on using it for a crime, which is impossible to prove unless you're caught in the act. Also a lot of civilians including myself own lock picks.

When I was a paramedic, I took a correspondence course in locksmithing. That way, as an amateur locksmith, I could legally own lock picks. Just having the tension bars and picks is not enough. It is a skill that must be learned and practiced... But it came in handy a couple of times.
