Magnificat: this is the song that ends Vespers. The fugue is often the final piece of a work in several parts. It is therefore for these two reasons, and for the qualities of the piece itself, a good final piece.
The Magnificat is Mary's response to the angel Gabriel who announces to her that she will give birth to Jesus. The content goes from joy to the announcement of events that will upset the established order. Very quickly the subject moves away from the initial prayer of a young woman to express all the power of divine revelation.
