Their author, harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder, has recently been adding to his considerable Bach catalogue with new recordings of canonical masterpieces such as the Goldberg Variations (95471), the Toccatas BWV 910-916 (96059) and the Art of Fugue (96035). These have attracted the enthusiasm of international critics: ‘Excellently recorded and faultlessly played’ (Goldbergs; Early Music Review).
Belder now turns his attention to the collection of six suites probably assembled by Bach in around 1725 from material he may have composed as early as a decade previously, while he had been in service to the Duke of Weimar. Despite their title, there is nothing especially English about these suites; they differ from the later French suites in their grander scale and more serious vein of expression, which reaches its height in the Sarabande of the Third Suite, which has become a profound meditation in the hands of artists as diverse as Maria Joõo Pires and Sviatoslav Richter.

Hola “Harpsichord Vinyl Gallery” siempre un gusto verlo por estos videos. Que opinas de esta nueva grabación de Jan Belder en Brilliant? Me parece mas fresca y brillante que la que tenían previamente a cargo de Van Asperen, creo que será mi nueva favorita de este sello discográfico.

The last movements of: BWV 825, BWV 826, BWV BWV 827 and BWV 829. The fugues of: BWV 847, BWV 852, BWV 857, BWV 864, BWV 865. BWV 910 (Second and Last Movements) BWV 911 (Last Movement) BWV 912 (Last Movement) BWV 915 (Last Movement) BWV 916 (First Movement) BWV 924, BWV 926, BWV 927, BWV 928, BWV 930. The fugues of: BWV 944, BWV 950, BWV 951, BWV 952, BWV 953, BWV 954, BWV 955, BWV 956 and BWV 957. BWV 971 (Third Movement) BWV 988. Variation 18 is nice.

According to Bach: clavichord>harpsichord, but I can also imagine that for him: organ>everything else. Also, remember these suites were written around 1713-14, while the idea of a "piano" was simply a research project in the Medici household by Cristofori. It wasn't unit at least 22+ years later than Silbermann would attempt their first pianos and Bach would express his justified criticism of the action and sound of these first generation attempts by the famous clavier & organ maker.
Bach must have gathered all his wits to compose the English Suites, but could really not find anything to say for the English and PJB tries hard to make them sound like the French Suites
