I travelled specially from Calgary, Alberta to Trogen to at last hear this ensemble in the flesh, after admiring their performances on Bachipedia for years. As I sat in the front row at the start of the concert, I could scarcely believe I was actually in the presence of Rudolph Lutz and his extraordinary ensemble of musicians who hitherto had just been faces on videos (I reserve particular admiration for the choir). Just listen to the opening chorus to understand why the fame of this group grows by the day. As if this were not enough, I was specially greeted by Herr Lutz and the ensemble’s director Konrad Hummler, and invited to the ensemble’s post-concert meal - all this for more-or-less a nobody. The blend of musical excellence, and kindness at a personal level, left me humbled.

Bach mi compositor preferido ......¡¡¡¡¡

Es ist doch immer wieder schön zu hören, wie sich Rudolf Lutz in die Stille vor dem Schlussapplaus hinein mit einem geflüsterten, hörbar von Herzen kommenden "Jaaaa "bei den Mitwirkenden bedankt. Das macht ihn, zusätzlich zu seinem ausdrucksvollen, präzisen Dirigat, noch sympathischer. Dem durchgängigen Lob für die Ausführenden kann ich mich hundertprozentig anschließen. Besonders hervorzuheben sind hier meiner Meinung nach die Trompeten. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, jemals Barocktrompeten gehört zu haben, die sich so perfekt in den Ensembleklang einfügen. Und Daniel Johannsen ist ein Wunder an Stimme und Musikalität. Besonders gut gefallen mir die Verzierungen im A2-Teil seiner Arie. Herzlichen Dank an alle Beteiligten bei der Aufführung meiner Lieblingskantate aus dem WO!

Excellent, as always. I particularly liked Mr Johannsens' modest, but artistic, decoration of the da capo in his aria. Very elegant.

Virtuoso trumpets. Absolute perfection.

Bach's trumpeters wouldn't have had holes in their trumpets. Only lips, tongue, breath and practice. (Obviously, they needed one hole to blow in, and another for the sound to exit. No finger holes, though )And they never would have--or could have-- double tongued the florid 32nd notes in the final chorus like a Herbert L. Clarke. On some level, there's dishonesty afoot. Why does the third trumpet player, for example, need these holes? Because if he played a real, natural trumpet, sans holes, questions would be raised. But yes, these guys didn't miss any notes. If that's your measure of art, more power to ya.

It's just fantastic to hear Bach's music performed with this level of love, care and attention to detail. Everything down to the supreme quality of the oboe playing in the recitative that precedes the final tenor aria (not at all easy to make precise and yet expressive), to the exquisite continuo playing (the detail in the improvised harpsichord part absolutely underlines the text - and it sure helps to have a really good instrument with a unique and beautiful sound) and the singing of such quality that you almost don't need to be a German speaker to understand exactly what's going on, so carefully and expressively is the text delivered. Daniel Johannsen is a true musical genius (and is showcased especially in Part VI, morphing, for the final time in this work from Evangelist to tenor soloist and making both roles distinct, yet unified) and the direction by Rudi Lutz, as usual, binds the entire performance together with a very special kind of dramatic flow, combined with sheer reflective beauty (Ich steh an deiner Krippen hier). I can't recall having heard the final recitative "a 4" sung so perfectly before. It's easy to forget just what a privilege it is to have performances of this rare quality "on tap", provided for free as an international public service. So, I'd just like to say a really heartfelt thanks once more to all my fellow musicians whose genius and hard work have made this possible for all of us to enjoy, especially during a period that has really tested the endurance of (especially) performing musicians everywhere. A sure sign that the human spirit is alive and well during these weird and dark times. We all look forward to better ones. PW

Der H-Dur Akkord im Choral "Ich steh an deiner Krippen hier" bei "nimm alles HIN" macht mich jedes mal fertig... Gänsehaut pur.

oh maravilloso tenor para Evangelista, y además excelente tenor para las arias. Además la voz perfecta para tenor de Bach y oratorios.

Ein Bravo auch an die Trompeten und Oboen für das exzellente Spiel der nicht einfachen Passagen der Kantate. Hier zeigt sich wieder einmal, was für herausragende Musiker (und Instrumentenbauer) es schon zu Bachs Zeiten gegeben haben muss, wenn er solche Passagen für sie schreiben konnte.

The voice of the male soloist was ever so beautiful. As always, thank you kindly for this concert.

It's a shame we resort to fingerholes on trumpets (and horns) where there were none in Bach's day. It's not an "academic" argument to say that doing away with holes on trumpets would yield different, surprising, and worthwhile results. It's a fact. Holes allow homogenized, consumer-friendly interpretations. I'm not criticising the excellent players here; it's audiences that need to self-educate through civil discourse.
