Striking how much positive and vital music was produced in times when the life expectancy was 35 years and a simple cold could kill you. Now we live in luxury and comfort and music has degenerated to brutal (pop) or chaotic(serialist) noise, invoking anguish and boredom.

Greetings from Perth Western Australia. I am recovering from cancer over the last 3 years. Music by jsb has played a big part on the slow road to recovery. Conductor Lutz and the whole orchestra and choirs are a something to cherish each day.

Am I the only one who has focused on the soprano's name??? Miriam "Feuersinger". With a name like that, you just know she was born to be a singer -- "with fire"!!! You all are wonderful!!! Much love from Washington DC, in the time of pandemic.

Greetings from Papua New Guinea. This is one of my favourite Bach Canata's. In Britain we know the main theme of each of the movements and the final choral as a hymn - "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation". This is indeed yet another wonderful performance by the J.S. Bach Foundation. Let me know when you are due to perform Cantata 50. I would sincerely love to be able to attend a live performance.

Such happy, joyous music. So uplifting for the spirit (soul) in these times. We have just been through the most devastating floods in the history of white settlement in eastern Australia, and the local people say there is a flood to come (because it has happened before) even bigger than what our city has experienced so far. We have been here a little over 200 years, so what would we know?

This is my first time hearing this cantata. Once again, Bach gives me goose pimples in the first one minute of his opening sequence. How the hell does he keep doing this??? It's remarkable! I've heard so many of his cantatas that I expect roughly the same evolution of a Bach opening. And this predictable sequence is fulfilled for the most part. But then the notes go somewhere totally unexpected, and you're like, "what? " But it's a beautiful, awe-inspiring "what?" This man had an unfathomable ability to make the old and predictable so new and refreshing. The only other major artists I know who do this consistently, like clockwork, are Shakespeare and Rembrandt. Bach definitely ranks up there in these rarefied echelons within the pantheon of music!

No No No! The words are NOT How the hell....etc. They should be "how did heaven guide Bach to his sublime level". For God given is J.S. Bach's gift to us all. I wish I knew who said the words but a man once said. "If you listen to the music of Beethoven, you'll learn all there is to know about Beethoven. If you listen to the Music of Mozart, you'll learn all there is to know about humanity. If you listen to the music of Bach, you'll learn all there is to know about God". I wish I had first said that statement.

@@Brap-pl2me This situation is similar to the massive addiction to drugs. Everyone knows it is destructive but still they can't resist it. Pop music is tightly connected to drug abuse. Most pop "stars" promote drug abuse and boast about their own addiction. The list is endless: Hendrix, Cobain, Faithfull, Winehouse etc .etc.

What is must have been like to be in Bach's choir, or church orchestra. I know his progressive music often drove the church elders insane, but the performers must have thought of Bach as some kind of Orpheus.

Actually the very scant evidence we have suggests that Bach's music was generally appreciated by the parishioners and elders. While there's evidence of friction between Bach and the Leipzig authorities, none of it seems to have involved the quality or nature of the music. Which makes sense given that they let him perform his music every week for 27 years -- and his immediate successor performed his chorale cantatas like this one. It's mostly a romantic-era notion that nobody liked or cared about his music.

Curious that you say this, because in general the Bach Stiftung is very engaged and joyful. I have to admit that this particular performance doesn't quite rise to the level of their very best work, however. I feel guilty even saying that. It's like saying one beautiful, perfect rose is not as beautiful as a perfect lily. All are wondrous and amazingly well done. Bravi.
