my thought exaclty, except for me the lightening struck when I heard the version by EDDIE BERMAN WITH LAURA MARLING, that was the first time I realized the lyrics are actually quite dark and sad. As a young guy growing up in the 70's/80's, this was one of the greatest hits of our age. Not just a song, but a statement at the time. It was the time of young rebels (in a good way), in terms of music. It was also the time where so many original artists wrote/performed music that it is still to this day being remastered/remixed etc. The 60's to 80's was truly a golden age for original music. Now The Boss, Bruce Springsteen was a legend in the 80's, known for making young guys feel they can do anything stupid, and young girls feeling they are queens. and this song was a lot more fast-paced back then. This gentleman took an original from Bruce Springsteen, The Boss, the rebel, and with all the due respect, down to the baseball cap turned backwards, managed to sing an acoustic masterpiece that I am sure my child-hood hero would approve of. Well done young sir, you nailed it!

The way humans live and behave hasn't changed much at all. We are much less violent today than we have been in the past. Also rich people have always exploited the less well off, and been selfish in the process. The only thing that is different today is that we are being confronted by a climate catastrophe. What make it seem all a bit much though, is our access to instance updates from the internet.

I think this version makes a lot of sense because even though the original is this big pop song, when you really listen to the lyrics it’s about someone who is lonely, full of doubt and self-loathing, but despite all that, and even in the face of a crippling fear of failure is still willing to put themselves out there because they want so badly to be loved by someone else. It’s actually kind of heartbreaking but hopeful at the same time.

Well said! I read somewhere that Bruce actually originally wrote it as a ballad.

I was never a Springsteen fan, not for any bad reason, just wasn't my jam and I have heard this song so many times over the years but I have never LISTENED to the lyrics or felt the emotions until now. Incredible. This is what they mean when they say pick the right song. This was a magical moment. ❤

Much like you, not a bug Springsteen fan, but I actually found myself singing along to all the lyrics that I didn't even realize were floating around in my head. That shows how many hundreds of times I must have heard it over the decades but this version..... 😮.

same! In fact, I usually turn Springsteen off. Heard this, and for the first time actually "heard" the song, just took my breath away - how beautiful the song is.

To slow it down and do acoustic puts emphasis on the lyrics and story - brilliant move. THE best audition I’ve ever heard on any tv show PERIOD … I’d hate to have done this rendition and then have to follow it up with something else!

It's really interesting how much this softer, more intimate interpretation completely changes the meaning of the song. It's a great song, and the fact that it can stand up to multiple meanings and interpretations, and be powerful either way, is a real testament to that.

I don't think this version changes the meaning of the song one iota. It expresses the angst of yearning in a different way. One is fierce and fiery and the other is soft and forlorn. Both are very passionate.
