@maxk880 Invented several serves. Swe / Euro / World + Olympic gold singles. European Championship final at the age of 16. 1997: World Table Tennis Champ. 7 matches, 3-0, didn't lose a single game. Fourth place Olympic games in Athens 38 years old (after knocking out the 2 highest ranked players and losing to the player ranked #3). 38 years old and still world class in one of the most reflex demanding sports. Around 44 years old atm and still active in the German bundesliga at top level.

Can people down-vote the two top comments? I don't think they stand in parallel with the sportsmanship of Waldner, so please.

Jo plays like a penholder, although he uses shake hand bat. A lot of tinny tricks gave him easy points which saves energy, that why he remains competitive even he was 40+. Play using brain instead of mussel.

Deng Yaping was good internationally because of her tricky fiddler game that foreigners couldn't comprehend. Domestically she was not very successful because fellow Chinese knew how to deal with it. Zhang Yining was the better overall table tennis player.

if he's the best table tennis player of all time why has he got so many silver and not gold?

  • @philcawser

He is arguably the best, though not the most metronomic performer, thus the silvers when he could have won more. A weakness for women & drink no doubt dulled his edge occasionally! At the highest level, the World Championships, he won medals over a 12 year period, significantly longer than any player in history (except Bergmann, just before & after WW2). This, along with his ability to surprise & delight with his play, is the reason for his following; and why the chinese fans revere him.

Every tournament is a streak of "natural" selections, so in the final you probably meet the strongest opponent. Winning a final is especially difficult, everything has to work out.
