J.M.K.E. - Tere perestroika

Музыка

Lyrics in english:
Welcome Perestroika
The sky is clear, the sea is blue.
Now everybody can breathe free air.
The hammer and the sickle are not
hurting anybody anymore.
They are talking about hard work. (not sure)
Welcome Perestroika, democracy
One country is escaping dictatorship.
Welcome Perestroika. Welcome nirvana.
The red flag is not so scary anymore.
A tractor is plowing a field, the land is bearing fruit
"Rahva Hääl" (Estonian newspaper) is not lying anymore.
Its mouth is not smoking with lies. (literally)
Prohibited movies are now showing at the movie theatres.
Prohibited bands are now allowed to perform.
Welcome Perestroika, democracy
It is great to escape dictatorship.
Welcome Perestroika, welcome freedom.
Everybody is singing patriotic songs.
Police (miilits-older days) uniforms are not sickening anymore.
Police force is worth praise.
Police and punk rocker are friendly now,
greeting each other with a handshake.
Welcome Perestroika, taaderiidaraa
Our country belongs to you and me now.
There is going to be a big anniversary every year.
People are partying: juhhei auu
There is not going to be an empty well in Virumaa.
There is going to be plane landing in front of a mausoleum.
There is no denying: democracy is big.
When adoring democracy, people's mouths remain open.
Welcome Perestroika into my homeland.
I'm welcoming you as long as I can.
Welcome Perestroika, democracy
Welcome Peresroika, give me five.
Welcome Perestroika, taaderiidaraa.
Welcome Perestroika, taaderiidaraa
Welcome Perestroika, welcome Perestroika.
Welcome Perestroika, give me five.
(English translation by / naomi7777777 ) Thank you very much, naomi

The band JMKE is an Estonian band. They sing in Estionian. This is taken from a Finnish TV programme Ajankohtainen Kakkonen, which was aired over 20 years ago, that's why it has Finnish subtitles.

How so? This won a competition on Estonian TV in 1988, before the song was recorded and before this video recording. Gorbachev was the one who put Perestroika in motion, he gave it a green light because he understood that he could not keep to country intact with totalitarianism. It failed either way, thankfully.

@@qwineth It wasn't. This had already played legally and was on TV in the Estonian SSR within the Soviet Union. This wasn't a secret for the censors. Alternative music, including punk and new wave was was rather commonplace in the late 1980's, even in the USSR. Nothing radical about it. Even Soviets would never have embarrassed themselves making a scene about this being on TV, when proof was readily available and common knowledge that this was present and shown in the media in the Soviet Union. They would never have embarrassed themselves by even bringing it up. Zero risk and nothing radical concerning this.

When I first time heard it from radio I thought it is finnish band - probably because of their slang and somewhat different intonation. But then I saw it on tv and discovered it is estonian band. My first thought was - "When they are put to jail?" But nevertheless I was so proud that our guys can manage to make so good and revolutionary music. Strange that after that song, Punk came out very quickly. Few months later there was thousands of Punkers.

fyi, this song is 100% sarcastic which may not come across so well in translation but if you read other lyrics by Tamme from this era it will be pretty clear. tamme saw perestroika as another superficial politbyro campaign to brush up their image while the system stayed the same and indeed in 1989 soviet soldiers murdered peaceful protesters in tbilisi, georgia with shovels and gas (the song tbilisi tänavad is about this incident) so pessimism about Gorbachev's policies was nothing too uncommon
