@@juliaistominaoden5801 I always took it as "Embrace insanity for me." or "Let's be crazy together." "Purple" is also used to describe writing that's over the top and florid. So I look at it as symbolizing insanity and self-indulgence. I think it's the idea of letting loose and being yourself in a relationship.

Hutz says the song is about a crazy neighbor he once had while living with his then-girlfriend. The neighbor was an old lady who used to dress in purple head-to-toe. According to Hutz, the woman was "clearly bonkers." When Hutz and his girlfriend had an argument, the girlfriend would scream and Hutz would respond by saying "you might as well start wearing purple now."

I went to Ireland on a class trip (originally from America). One night, my friends and I visited a small set of islands called the Erin Islands. There was a festival going on. We were drunk. My friend pulls out a Ukulele and we start singing Start Wearing Purple. The locals took a liking to us for this and joined in a bit. My sister went a year later. Asked about us. The locals said they remembered us fondly for it

One of the best nights of my life for sure! London was lit up in a gypsy frenzy!

Saw Gogol Bordello in DC last week :D During the whole thing it felt like I was continuously going to burst with happiness. The concert ended and the whole band went offstage and out of sight but we, the entirety of the audience, we wouldn't budge! We were like vultures and we wanted MORE Gogol Bordello. The band walked back in one by one, booze in hand, with Eugene declaring "we could go on all night." I lost all sense of time but if i'm not mistaken they gave us almost an extra hour!!! It was a truly remarkable night. Thank you members of Gogol Bordello. Would attend again and again and again.

Saw them years ago at the 930 club in DC. It was one of the most balls-out, insane, fun, (drunk) concerts I've ever been to. I don't say this about a lot of bands, but I'd go see them anywhere, anytime, even if it was a street corner.

I always felt this should be used in a joker intoduction scene. From.beginning untill just after the drop and something significant should happen between drop and second build up.

Eugene Hutz, The lead singer and song writer of Gogol Brodello is a genius. He is absolutely incredible on stage. The entire band is awesome as well. I've watched a couple interviews of Eugene and even his English is very articulate, expressive, and enunciated. He has said his music and song writing is his religion. When you see him perform it comes straight from the heart.

I remember being younger and loving this song when it first came out, 2005ish, my mother thought it was stupid that i love it...fast forward 5 years later and my brother comes and tells me about a "great new band" he found. Fuck you bro! i saw it first! :D

My dad was pretty food friends with Eugene Hutz in Vermont in the 90s back before Gogol Bordello. He apparently still has some demo tapes of unreleased songs Eugene gave him.

It sounds like the song of a gypsy caravan of anecdotes that dances around and then leaves you naked in exchange for a horse in the middle of nowhere

Liev Schreiber was genius in casting Eugene in, Everything Is Illuminated. I love that this song played over the end credits.

I love playing this song at open mic nights, jam sessions, anyplace I can get a bunch of musicians together. It's a two-chord song, fun as heck, and ANYBODY can solo wildly over that chorus vamp. One time at a convention I started with my fiddle and a buddy with a kazoo, and by the end of it we had a purple conga-line weaving through three ballrooms.

I love this song! "Everything is illuminated" brought me here!

My friends and I were in a bar sponsored drinking olympics and this was our theme song that carried us to victory. The prize was the free booze during the event and a stupid piece of driftwood. Great fucking night.

So proud, my 10 year old son asked his friends parents to play this in their car. They are straighty one eighties, and they were suitably traumatised 😂😂

I was at a festival. I lost all my friends (that's something I do every festival). I walked into a big tent and Gogol Bordello (I never heard of them before) was playing this song! I could not help myself and started dancing! Then I saw this woman and she was also dancing alone. So I asked her: "Mylady, do you want to dance?" And we danced like there was no one watching!

Heard this song while reading the credits for the movie:EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED. The movie blew me away. Such humor combined with such a serious story. Liev Schrieber wrote the screenplay from the novel and directed it. Absolutely brilliant. If you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to do so. As for this song, it wants to make this 65yr old women get up and dance, and to wear purple.

a couple of hundred years ago it would have been illegal to use the color purple, it was reserved for nobility like kings and emporers, originally it was because of the price that only nobility could afford it but then they decided to own it, it was about the hardest dye to make, it came from a tiny gland on an already tiny mollusk. So if you ever see really old paintings of noblemen they will probably be wearing something purple like a cloak, and you will see earth tones on the majority of other people
