As every year, for hip-hop fans, February is marked by "Dilla Month" - it is a month in which we remember the work, genius and life of the legendary producer from Detroit. Last Tuesday, James Dewitt Yancey, better known as Jay Dee or J Dilla, would have celebrated his 49th birthday, and today it's been 17 years (hard to believe) since the creator of "Donuts" left us.
Often in interviews, whenever there is an opportunity, we ask the artists who knew Dilla about their memories of him, and just as often they tell wonderful stories full of positive feelings. In an interview we published on Sunday with British soul singer Omar, he shared with us his hilarious recollection of the day he met Dilla and remembers being introduced to him by Common, with whom he worked on "Electric Circus".
It is widely known that Dilla was a titan of work - he could sit for hours in the studio, and then, to relax, he would get in the car and go to a nightclub. Omar here sheds some light on this fun side of
the soulful musician.
