On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Adaptive optics are likely to be key to any practical laser weapon beyond short-range point defence. Basically the system watches how the beam distorts in the atmosphere on the way to the target, and then pre-distorts the beam in the equal and opposite manner so that the refraction in the atmosphere actually focuses the beam. As for line-of-sight, even at 1,000 metres altitude the ground horizon is already over 100 km away; at 10,000 metres altitude, you have line-of-sight to a coaltitude target at over 700 km range, etc.

Apparently that F22 with reflective paint is a test bed for new technologies intended for the NGAD program (Next Generation Air Dominance) and that coating is supposed to make the aircraft harder to detect by both radar and thermal. And yes, NGAD is being envisioned to use directed energy weapons and countermeasures (lasers).

Going off of you talking about weapon enhancements, I’ve always been curious about if it’d be possible/ practical to creat a missile that has both radar detection and thermal detection so that when you fire the missile and it’s guided by the radar lock, if the bandit goes “cold” the missle could then hone in on the thermal signature. Granted, it’d have to be a highly sensitive thermal sensor to acquire and maintain track for potentially miles, which would also make it susceptible to other heat signatures. I don’t know Jack about the technology but if it was tuned to seek out specific thermal temps maybe it’d be more accurate. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The polished, mirrored effect does make sense. Mirrored, polished aluminum used to the the norm, reduced weight and didn’t make air to air combat any easier.

I think the finish you're looking at is testing of new ceramic RAM. The last generation of polymer RAM is speed limited to about Mach 1.6. NG ceramic based ram maintains its properties up to about 2000 degrees F and so will maintain stealth up to hypersonic speed and hugely reduce Mx costs for the RAM essential to reduction of radar signature -- a considerable leap forward.

There is some really interesting research being done on laser harmonics and beam attenuation to let laser beams travel with less atmospheric interference. The real problem is that clouds or rain will always beat lasers, and if your laser pulse doesn’t defeat the target, the melted part of the exterior will very efficiently radiate the heat away and to cooler parts of the airframe, rendering the weapon less and less effective. It seems like for the next few decades at least, lasers will only be used in aircraft to blind sensors and maybe detonate missiles. All that being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Air Force or even the Army ends up developing something like the YAL-1 based on solid state lasers for battlefield artillery/rocket/mortar interdiction fairly soon.

The mirror coating might be a response to the development of airborne laser target designation systems that themselves were designed (by Russian, China etc.) in response to stealth technology. The coating isn't there to reflect a laser weapon. It's there to defeat an enemy targeting system.

Interesting that the simulator seems to be showing the new RAM system that is out of the NGAD from development. The real point of interest is the computing power of the sensor systems of the J20. They probably don't have anything close to even what is in the F22 after it's last upgrade. Put two F35 in the area and see how fast the J20's get splashed. The computing power and sensor capability are a league above. The J20 is an interceptor with a better stealth profile forward than backward, and the way your scenario worked out was interesting. I love listening to your ongoing discussion of tactics, your internal monologue is pretty clear!

@@duongle1606 Some of the TR3/BLK4 details are out and the computing upgrade has been put out there as a bench mark numbers. The computing power of the F35 is 25x more than the current F35 standard. We have no real data on computing power of the J-20 but we do know the general direction from whence they get their chips. and the comparison would not be in the same order of magnitude.
