IKR I'm rewatching it and I just can't believe that Armand who is so powerful could be held down by his coven that his put to sleep on a whim in the restaurant. Im starting to think this entire play was Armand's to begin with (he hinted at it to Louis in that one scene) and not Santiago at all. We've seen how he ragdolls Lestat and Santiago... suddenly he is helpless?

I find it really cool that even as a book reader I'm not 100% sure what went down. That's exciting! I think it's more likely that he has something he's using as leverage. Lestat is a lot more powerful here than he was in the mid 1700's (and I'm side eyeing Armand's tale of completely overpowering Lestat even back then). In any case, Armand prefers manipulation to brute strength.

@@NashmiroticI keep seeing people leave this comment, but my question is why? So he can have Louis for himself? Claudia and Madeline were on their way out of town? They were already going their separate ways. Is this an elaborate way to destroy his coven, using Louis to do it? If he has the power to lite their coffins on fire as they slept, why not do that instead of staging this show trial and driving Louis to do it?

The interesting thing to me about the 1x05 fight revisit is it actually doesn’t change much, it just fills in some gaps and adds layers to it. In season 1 it wasn’t even really Louis’ perspective bc the camera stays on Claudia the entire time until the drop. They’re going off of her memory of it, which might be flawed in its own right, but we take it as it is. But she’s out in the hall, we can hear them fighting in the other room but we don’t see it, we don’t know what happens. Until now, potentially. For me this is less a changed memory, and just us getting a look at the other side of the wall. It seems to me like in some cases Louis, consciously or not, omitted some things here and there to soften the story. And understandably! But undeniably, like Daniel said with the removal of diary pages, when Louis editorializes, however noble the reason, it brings some of the rest of the story into question. For the most part I don’t think Louis’ memories are dishonest or wrong. Sometimes they’re skewed, but mostly he sometimes leaves gaps. This is one of them. We see a side of Louis that we’ve seen come out a few times before, like in the fight with Armand. But its interesting that in Louis’ version of the story, he paints himself as not doing anything to defend Claudia when lestat pins her to the wall, where in Lestat’s version, Louis is going ballistic on her behalf, in protection of her. On some level I think it’s more about them and their resentments than it really is about Claudia. She is, tragically, always just caught up between them, from the start. I say this because we also see end of 1x07 that when Louis refuses to burn lestat, he ends up pinning Claudia the exact same way. Part of the reason I say, other than those few discrepancies, this revelation doesn’t really change anything is the presence of Louis’ harsh words or the fight he doesn’t change anything about the drop afterwards, which were not shown an alternate perspective of. Here at least. We know that that memory is likely at least a little flawed bc it has the unscathed, immaculate, not bloody lestat, so if they were truly fighting like this, he wouldn’t have looked like that in Louis’ memory of it. Things to consider. BUT! The fight is still a fight. It’s their push and pull and volatility. The drop is still very pointedly after that fighting stops. It is not necessary, it’s not in reaction to anything besides words and anger. It’s just cruelty. To me that scene adds depth to both Louis and lestat and their relationship, and in some ways affords Louis more agency, but it also does absolutely nothing to exonerate lestat of his actions, which he himself goes on to explicitly point out in the trial, no matter how much Santiago tries to frame it as an understandable reaction to Louis’ provocation. I honestly love the way the show has gone back to these moments. Neither is the whole truth. Neither is wholly discredited. It’s the monster of memory, the tinted lens of perspective, the odyssey of recollection, the funhouse mirror of performance. God I love this show so much

  • @evren5642

!!! Couldn’t have put it better honestly. It just adds extra dimension, it doesn’t try to excuse what happened after. I’m kind of excited to see that violent side of Louis explored more in-depth (as we inevitably will in the finale as he takes his revenge on the coven) bc really that side of him is interesting specifically Because it is so different from his baseline self. He has so many good and nuanced qualities, and yet he also has this side of him that lashes out and is capable of doing immense damage. And intriguingly it seems to sometimes be an almost out of body experience for him when it happens; I think there’s something potentially dissociative about it. Which ofc means some of those moments would probably also just genuinely be harder for him to recall after the fact.

A giant note of evidence that the fight in the room where Lestat was telling Louis to stop but Louis kept fighting him: there is a GIANT dent in the coffin where Louis slammed Lestat’s head into it which appeared only in episodes AFTER the fight in episode 5 and not before the fight. People actually noticed this when S1 was airing, but I didn’t! There’s also the fact that all of Lestat’s loud lines while Louis was being the aggressor (“I am trying to restrain myself”, “I don’t want to fight like this”) ARE heard from outside the room from Claudia’s perspective in episode 5. Which were strange lines at the time, in addition to how we went from Louis yelling to Claudia that they were done to Lestat flying Louis through the wall, but now they’re recontextualized to Lestat trying to end the fight, not fighting back, then snapping after Louis’ words.

Going back to season one, the writers have done so much to make the audience understand what an unreliable narrator Louis is and people are still so quick to dismiss Lestat’s version of events for the sole reason that it doesn’t match up with Louis’.

Yeah people tend to side with the narrator they’re used to. Siding with Louis seems like the most logical thing as most viewers would feel they know him best… or that they feel for him most , cause we’re so used to him. Of course unreliable narrator is a possibility, as is the fact that both recollections can be true. People can experience the same situation very differently . It’s just so striking to see Louis up there , unable to speak or move while Lestat recalls moments we’ve seen but in such a different way. The want to protect Louis jumped out.

Lestat knew first hand the desperation to turn someone when they're dying, but he also knew certain people would always be miserable. Miserable to the point where love would not save them and he knew the pain of seeing them spiral because of it, and still loving that person. I think this is also furthered by Lestat repeating a similar sentiment about Louis that he said about Nicki. "You still hope he'll emerge from his melancholy" // "he will rise out of it."

The writers have made anti-blackness so omnipresent at that trial, from Santiago mocking reading of Claudia's diaries and painting Louis in predatory stereotypes, nailing them to the stage-like set dressing and showing leniency only towards Madeleine, to calling it a stoning. The dehumanization of the pictures on the projection screen. “props, props in a play” black bodies objectified, ankles cut like they’re enslaved, tortured any time they try to speak or defend themselves while the white-majority crowd jeers and laughs and sighs over the nonblack men spinning their tale. I am not an Armand Apologist, I am not an Armand defender. I am an Armand understander and enjoyer. Every time people are like “Why would Armand do this” I feel like they haven’t really reckoned with the mindfuck that is his existence. I truly believe we are giving him way too much credit. I think it was incredible and deliberate that the writers took one of the most defining lines of Armand's inaction ("I could not prevent it") and weaved it through his entire psychological profile. It is where Armand has internalized learned helplessness. Even in the book Louis has to tell Armand that he doesn't even use a 10th of the power he has. He could have stopped it but Armand himself doesn't think he can so he doesn't do anything at all. Most people watching/ reading IWTV: There is no way that Armand truly believes he's powerless The Writers: What If he really did tho? “It’s not MY coven anymore, so I can’t stop them, but Louis is MY companion so I’M gonna push and save HIM. I can’t save Claudia, Santiago is HER coven leader now. I can’t prevent him from disciplining his followers.” He tells himself over and over and makes sure Louis knows it

You always give such fantastic reactions! You really feel the emotion from you. It’s so interesting seeing different reactions to the trial and interpreting lestat’s participation in it all. To me it seems like the script lestat was meant to be sticking to was written to drive a wedge between him and Louis by Armand who very much wanted the trial to happen I think so he could have Louis for himself, and lestat was breaking from the script when he could because he did not want to be there doing it. Re-watching lestat for signs of distress and looking dazed just before Claudia’s death makes it seem he’s being influenced or coerced like in the book. And at the end Armand is the one telling us about claduia’s death, Louis wasn’t there to witness it, it’s very suspicious of it all, I doubt lestat was actually stand and watch her burn if he was able to move. But that’s my opinion 😂

When you find out that Louis was just as toxic.. if not moreso then Lestat. Lol. Please understand.. Louis is not a reliable story teller.. It very well is possible Louis was the one hunting Lestat. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. But I do believe Lestat is telling the truth as is revealed later.. through the majority of this. Louis continually used Lestat's loneliness as a weapon against him and broke his heart.. Everyone around Louis is unhappy.. Louis is the real problem as Raglan James said. Also Lestat doesn't have Louis on trial. He is a captive too. The Coven does. He was not happy having to watch Claudia die. He was in fact horrified. He mourns her for a long time. "Lestat was hurting Louis.".. are you sure about that? He did drop him. They agree on that. However.. we have more context on that now... Lestat is genuinely sorry for the awful act of dropping Louis.. Is Louis sorry for threatening to kill Lestat.. attempting too. Then actually kinda doing it.. (In his mind) They are both toxic.. But if my significant other said and did the things to me that Louis did to Lestat in that townhouse before he lost his temper.. I would want to hurt them too.

as armand's #1 defense attorney i have to admit he definitely could have helped claudia and madeline but he didn't want to! armand's story is horrifying and he's extremely old--his only way to maintain sanity is through other people (the Paris coven, the theatre, louis!) and he's so desperate to maintain that connection that he probably felt desperate enough to go along with the trial to get louis to himself AND "prove" to louis that lestat doesn't want him. such a great episode 😭😭

I've never fully trusted Louis. I think people underestimate how toxic he is as well. He manipulated Lestat just as much as he manipulated him. He's done the same to Armand. He didn't tell Lestat he loved him because he knew it was a way to control him. But he did the opposite with Armand because he knew to control him he had to say he loved him. I mean, Armand literally started calling him Master and hes wayy older than him lol. Louis scares me more than any of them tbh. And the fact that, forgot what those people are called, told Daniel to watch out for Louis just confirmed my suspicions. And I dont think there should be any question of Armands ability to save them all, but he's a coward. I think he put Louis in this position because he knew he would want revenge and maybe get rid of the coven for him. I think that's what he did with Lestat, but I have to rewatch the episode.

First of all, Armand is over 500 years old. He is so powerful. Why the hell could he not put everyone to sleep, take them out of there? Or at least set vamps on fire??? Sam was blocking him, give me a break. That suit on Lestat, Jesus, he's never looked better & that profile, pretty hot & I'm a lesbian lol No one can script Lestat, he's always going off script. Santiago was pleased when he finally did came back tho. A story of love not butchery. Then, finally, the first look between Louis & Lestat.... So Lestat's version is the right one? As far as Claudia's transformation. Holy crap! Armand just sitting there, watching. He was the oldest most powerful vampire there, wtf??? It pissed me off. One of my favorite moments, Lestat moving so fast to the balcony & snarling at that homophobe. Sam Reid's performance was everything, pure brilliance. "I was not worthy of the forgiveness you would grant me." Broke my heart.....Katie: I would highly recommend you read the books, or listen to them, they're amazing. I think next season will be from the book, 'The Vampire, Lestat' & if they have a 4th season, that could be, 'Queen Of The Damned.'

Lestat can’t do anything because he’s also being manipulated by Armand/the coven - Armand just isn’t telling us that or that he did nothing to save Claudia because he wanted her dead and out of his way - and also for Lestat to suffer, Santiago took the yellow dress so I think we might see Louis unlock that true memory of him and Lestat weeping over dress ❤

And even though I've always been Team Lestat (and always will be), isn't it possible it was more than just Sam holding Armand back? I think it was the whole coven suppressing him so he could only shoot one shot and it was for Louis (for whatever reason, not a fan). Anyway, I can't believe it may be years until a potential season 3, but I'm so hyped for the finale. I skipped the trailer. Great reaction and great interview with Assad. I've always admired and loved the character of Claudia, in the books, the movie, and especially the AMC version of Claudia, and so I've dreaded this moment since she appeared in season one. But my GOD, girl AMC did her justice, no pun intended, for the injustice leveled upon her. Never had I ever in my life cried as hard and as deeply over a work of fiction as I did when viewing the last 15 mins of this episode. She was ever defiant to the very last moment. All of the actors were brilliant beyond compare. I have no respect for Armand, the pitiful creature he is. Claiming he could not hear what Claudia was saying to Madelaine. I am so happy with the way AMC expounded upon her as a character. She and Claudia would have ruled the night had Armand not sold them out for his needy need of Louie. Who is it that feeds Louie their blood to help him escape. I believe it will be Lestat who frees his progeny. We shall see.

Some say because the Writers' Strike pushed production off schedule and now the timing is off; but that's not true. They filmed in Prague and had permission to continue. It was the Actors' Strike that delayed production. But my reasoning is that it's a Horror show. And the Horror Genre is hardly ever considered come accolades. But that has showed signs of changing in recent years because of shows like 'Wednesday', 'The Last of Us', 'The Walking Dead', and of course 'American Horror Story'. All nominated but scarce wins. So television studios mainly focus on pushing their Drama shows. But if any Horror show has a chance of finally breaking through for wins - I'd bet on this one for sure. Critics LOVE it and now that the review bombing has stopped, the audience is really starting to grow. When it drops on Netflix later this year I hope it finally blows up. Because 🤯, this is good tv.

Because as soon as his POV starts, things start to get wonky. Mostly because, wow, he really didn't care much about Claudia at all - he considered her doomed from the start. As for Lestat...I don't think he had any desire whatsoever to sit there and watch Claudia die. His look of horror says that.

I find this so frustrating, why is Louis always excused for his behavior but Lestat is villianized especially when we’ve seen that Louis’s account is not accurate and that he can also be extremely mean and cruel? He did hold his love over Lestat, he forced Lestat to create Claudia. Why is there no sympathy for Lestat, but Louis gets to be an eternal victim? I don’t believe this account of what happened at the trial. It would not have taken all of Armand’s strength to save Louis. I believe Lestat saved Louis. I believe Lestat was also a captive and that this was all orchestrated by Armand. Why people believe anything Armand says or has any bit of sympathy for Armand is beyond me. He’s a liar. I don’t know where they are taking the story but in the books Claudia’s death was very different and Armand played a very different role in it. I won’t say more than that. As much as I like Claudia I do feel her anger and hate towards Lestat is sort of unfair because she doesn’t know the truth. She wasn’t told the truth, Louis allowed Lestat to be the monster. I really hope we get Lestat’s account next season.

I can't believe Armand, the most powerful vampire in that room, couldn't save Louis i just can't!! I thought it was disgusting how they lied and villainized Louis to make him look like he was hunting and chasing Lestat, a lot of people pointed out that the coven definitely plays on the racist clichés of Louis being the seductress and coming after poor Lestat, and it makes sense because that crowd was so ready to stone them and believe Lestat, despite not knowing them, mind you most of them knew baby lulu. Louis having to sit there while everyone looked down on the abuse he never thought Lestat was capable of was awful, if Lestat didn't actually defend him there everybody would be mocking his situation like it's nothing and he's making it a big deal and I can't imagine what that feels like :(
