    The reason why the dialogue is so specific is because the writer's room for this show is full of playwrights. Even the showrunner is, I believe, an award winning playwright.

    @@angeleyes3386 I think Louise intended to be far away across the ocean by then. He just wanted he and Claudia to be free of Lestat. I don't think he truly wanted to destroy Lestat. He could have completely decapitated and burned him to ashes, but he didn't. He loved him too much to destroy him. I'm not sure if you have read the books, and I'm not sure how much this series will follow the books, but your question does become a significant issue in the book. When Louis hung that man on the fence with that sign... You said, "Make a statement.", but every black person watching this show knew what was going to happen next. You're saying it wasn't Louis's fault. It was. They know it was a black person who did it, so they wipe out the black people in the city. That's just how it went. Hell, even today, if there is a major crime like a mass shooting or smoothing, every black person is like "don't be black. don't be black. don't be black." It may be 2023, but the eyes will still move to our direction.

    I kind of figured the pressure was already building up and Louis just popped the balloon. It *was* his fault. But it was also always going to happen.... because it was 100% intentional. If you take people, put pressure on them, and then blame them for anything bad that happens when they revolt against your tyranny you can always both be the tyrant *and* the victim, even as you slaughter innocents who had no part in the revolt. And that, is a tale as old as time.

    it's always so sad coming upon people who actually believe the race riots were louis fault. even lestat tells him it wasn't his fault. glad that the petty pumpkins are smart enough to catch on to that fact there. and you do not speak for all black people. because black people who know the real life history the show is drawing from know race riots were common in the usa during jim crow. it was how white america punished black americans for trying to make their own spaces. as lestat said, “you merely provided them an excuse.” it was going to happen with or without louis getting involved. and louis blaming himself is part of his melancholy and also hubris

    Precisely, it's like the actual slaves that did manage at the time to burn down their plantations or kill their "masters." Yes, justified, but also they all knew what would happen and who would come after them, and could not have expected no retaliation. In situations like this, people are bound to snap and when you do snap from the pressure of living like this, you just do, and in the heat of the moment, you aren't thinking. All you want is to be free of what has been plaguing you your whole life. There may have been a little ignorance there, like putting up the colored only sign on the door or thinking he had any type of protection in the city because he had money, but agree he had to know that this wasn't going to go unchecked in this time period or frankly, any other. I am however glad that this is one of the few reactions I've seen where race wasn't just glossed over because that is a HUGE part of the context and why Anne Rice was so keen on having Louis be black and not white, because there was this story to tell where context was huge. Dynamics of power, race, society, are all challenged. I loved that about season 1.

    if lestat was ever gonna take out one of Louis' family members, it woulda been his mom, not Paul. And NO, Lestat's entire point was that he DIDN'T want Louis to struggle with guilt and shame. That's why he would get so angry about Louis refusing human blood. Because it was such a struggle for Louis to maintain it.

  • @CTM418

    @CTM418

    Kind of. I think it all ties into Lestat needing to be with someone and accept who he is unconditionally. Because Lestat WAS attempting to guilt trip him for withholding sex when he was looking for Claudia and then say he was making Louis feel bad for his choice of diet, discouraged him from seeing his family, or wanting to work/buy the Azalea. It's Lestat thinking that Louis needs what Lestat personally needs to be happy and live without shame, which doesn't work like that. Guilt tripping someone/discouraging someone for doing something that seems important to them right now is not the way to go. Because Louis at the start of the series started off being able to hold his own, then slowly started turning into a broken shell of a man who didn't defy Lestat anymore. So was Lestat really trying to help Louis live without shame or was he just trying to get him to stop complaining?

    @@CTM418 this is a fantastic comment because I disagree so strongly with it lol! 😅 All those things for sure happen but it completely depends on which perspective you’re looking at everybody’s actions. There is sooooo much context to every action Lestat took (he’s a completely different *species* than Louis; an old vampire who is bitter towards humanity right now), and sooooo much pathos as to why Louis acts the way he acts (he’s a new vampire who barely knew himself as a human and now has to navigate a world in which he will outlive his complicated family). To me, they’re both understandable and I think a lot of actions attributed to Lestat are judged from the very human lens of **is this healthy on the human morality spectrum** which…just isn’t as applicable anymore. And this will be further explored in season two. Anyway, I look forward to turning this comment over in my brain some more. 😆

  • @CTM418

    @CTM418

    6 ай бұрын

    @@RixxeyG So are you saying then that because they are vampires that "human" morality 100% no longer applies to them, so we cannot look at them through that lens in any way? Because Anne Rice literally based Lestat, Louis, and Claudia on her human family. The show paints a very human portrait of domestic abuse that happens within a family with the patriarchal "head". I think it's more interesting to see how much human society affects these vampires so that even though they call themselves "above" or "other" to humans, they are still influenced by their norms, with their family/group dynamics being reflected as such. The show on numerous occasions calls Louis the housewife and Claudia the daughter, and no matter how much they try to escape that role, the role sticks so long as Lestat is present in their lives. In fact, at one point, Louis calls himself and Claudia the children of Lestat, comparing himself to how a lot of women in classical works of literature felt when their oppressive husbands treated them like their own children and/or frightened them. Claudia and Louis cannot escape racism as vampires, because not only do humans still treat them unfairly, their dynamic with Lestat also paints a portrait of a slave master and the enslaved, with the slave master holding all the power and knowledge, and the enslaved being forced to adapt and navigate that environment (which is also pointed out in the show). I don't know; I feel comments like "they're vampires, don't judge them so harshly, everyone's understandable", or "wait until we see Lestat's perspective until we judge!" is such a cop-out because Anne Rice, the actors, and creator of the show emphasizes the humanity of these inhuman vampires on multiple occasions, abuse can exist either way, and also...why is it important to also look at things through Lestat's perspective in the case mentioned previously? I already understand Lestat's perspective after reading the books and even watching the first season. But how is it that Louis through his narration, and Claudia through her diaries, describe themselves being abused make fans then go, "Well, they're vampires. Things are just like that. Let's just see what Lestat says to find out what REALLY happened. Lestat's the older and wiser vampire after all", to me says everything. Like you never said this exactly, but why I'm getting the feeling that a lot of people think that Louis and Claudia the only unreliable ones, and only through understanding Lestat, we can see the real truth? Why do we need to see "both sides of the story", which is only what some fans say whenever the abuse of Louis by Lestat is brought up? Like Idk what your comment was meant to imply, especially because you were laughing so much at the supposed ridiculousness of it and that you needed to wrap your head around it. You told me I needed to understand both perspectives, but I already did in my last comment?? (the show was pretty transparent about that) I only questioned the INNOCENCE of Lestat's actions. So what did you really want me to say: "aww, poor weedle old vampire, so bitter about humanity, I completely understand what you're doing to Louis, you can't help it, and you're probably right anyway. Louis doesn't understand better because he's too young."

    The only problem I find with this is not actually the show's fault. People who are familiar with the original book and movie go into this show thinking Lestat is evil and just tricking everyone. But he's not. Lestat isn't tricking Louis. He doesn't want a mindless slave. He wants an actual partner. He could mind snatch anyone he wants, if that's what he wanted, but he doesn't want that with Louis. The first book and movie are told from Louis's point of view and as they thankfully show a few times in this show, LOUIS IS NOT A RELIABLE NARRATOR. The Lestat in this show is the Lestat from the other books in the series. He's not evil. Yes, he has a temper. Yes, he kills people. He's a vampire. Lions aren't called murderers for eating other animals. That's just what they do. And it wasn't even Lestat's choice to become a vampire. That's why he's big on consent for the change. Lestat has major abandonment issues and major religion issues. But he did NOT kill Paul. He has never kept Louis from his family, because he knows he loves them. I do love the change in this show however that Lestat actually takes the time to get to know Louis. He's intrigued by him from the beginning, but then, THEY ACTUALLY DATE... FOR WEEKS. Lestat literally falls in love with Louis. Book and movie Lestat, if Louis had said no to turning, Lestat would have killed him. THIS Lestat... he would have let him live and just kept trying to persuade him. He has a temper, yes, but he mostly reigns it in until he snaps and it goes too far. Until then... what was he doing wrong? People keep saying, he's evil, he's evil. Aside from the vampire killings... what was he doing that was evil? He bends over backwards (literally, in some cases) to make Louis happy. It's falls apart later, when he gets violent with Louis, but that's not there at the beginning so people are projecting the other versions of Lestat onto this one. I do appreciate that the show points out that Louis is not being honest in his telling. I just wish they'd have done it a few more times throughout the show. I remember once with the soldier, once with a Claudia point, and then calling him out in the ending. They're kinda blink and you miss it moments.

He can be cruel but he can also be joyful and generous, and while I loved this series, I was frustrated that it just depicted Lestat as a violent abuser (which he isn't in INTERVIEW, even at his worst). I would also remind @pettypumpkins that what we are seeing is LOUIS'S guilt-ridden look back at things and that this account is one-sided and not accurate.

    Lestat is very misunderstood and the way the show portrays him isnt exactly how he truely is and theres some theories that Armand is messing with louis memories and that he is misremembering how things actually happened. Its clear that hes in a new toxic relationship, notice how the bookshelves are too high for louis to reach but armand can? A metaphor for armand keeping the knowledge from Louis. Cant wait for season 2. I definitely recommend reading The vampire lestat to really get a good idea of who he truly is.

    I mean it's not as white and black. The show doesn't have the same trajectory as the book. When Anne Rice wrote the first interview book, she was grieving like Louis and identified with him, Thus the story sympathized with him and lestat was the "villain". Then as she moved further along, she grew resentful of what Louis represented and further fleshed out lestat. Now the show writers have very rich source material to base the show on, but they have much freedom with it

    @anylove370 anne flip flops all the time tbh, she's said before that in interview she wrote as louis and in tvl she wrote as lestat- the show alr had a bit of a challenge to explain that naturally without explicitly stating the canon reasons like the book did- cause whilst we're relying on louis' retelling in the series, we can actually SEE how everyone else acts around him, meaning the reader doesnt necessarily get the idea that something else could've happened, which is kinda how it is in the books That was so incoherent im sorry its v late

    @@calamondin8918 I get what you mean but the show doesn't claim that Louis' retelling of events is the truth, and they've already explored other points of view through Claudia's diaries and Armand's interview. I think it's likely that incorporating lestat will be done either via Daniel interviewing him directly or lestat responding to Louis' interview going public. My point in my first response is that saying that lestat's version of the story is the truth is inaccurate. I just tried to explain why Lestat gets a detailed backstory that seems to contradict the first book and why that doesn't mean Louis lied or lestat is a "good guy" (which let's face it, they're vampires, none of them are good according to human standards of behavior)

    BOOK SUGGESTIONS (since you asked): 30 year Anne Rice fan here. Since you've already watched the 1994 movie you know most of the big plot beats from the rest of the first book, but as it will only be a few months until S2 drops I'd say it would be best to wait your reading until after that. Then I'd get started on enjoying some of the most florid, vivid, gothic prose you're ever likely to encounter! The closest thing to a consensus among book fans is that books 1-3 are the most consistently high quality ones in the series; books 4-6 have very mixed reviews (with book 6 being particularly polarizing, everyone seems to either love it or hate it); and opinions on the remainder of the series vary from positive to open ridicule to utter hatred. Personally, I think that long time fans became very protective of the characters and stories over the decades, and as Rice's own opinions and characterizations changed (as would be expected over 40+ years) many people felt betrayed or abandoned by the author and felt the books deviated too much from the original tone and style. Also worth mentioning is that she did not use a creative editor after book 3, and she alienated lots of fans with her legal actions against fan fiction writers. True facts: the Mayfair Witches books are even more polarizing as their content makes the Vampire Chronicles look like YA romance. That trilogy is wall to wall explicit incest, underage sex, and rape - I say this as an avid fan of those books as well! They're very well written and completely original, if you can stomach the squicky content. The Mayfair TV series? Don't waste your time, it is TERRIBLE. While it shares a universe with IWTV, I highly doubt that it will last long enough to get to the actual crossover material. Thank you for your reaction, it was very entertaining!

    This is just the tip of the iceberg. Unlike many shows who squeeze 1 whole book into an 8hour/8episode series, this season 1 of Interview S1 only covers half of the first book... so the 2nd half might be covered in season 2. I’m thinking each book will maybe split up into 2 seasons, be more or less, to comfortably cover as much material as possible. Though I think the 2nd book, The Vampire Lestat, covers A LOT throughout centuries of story so it might be 2 or maybe 3 seasons before they reach book 3 which is Queen of the Damned and who knows if that one will be the same. We will have to wait and see. Plus you’ll have to watch The Mayfair Witches show, based on the Mayfair Witches trilogy books by Anne Rice which AMC also bought the rights to, as well afterwards because it’s part of the Immortal Universe as well and they’ll be Inter once fed and maybe someday some characters from both shows my appear in each others shows etc.

    I watched the original film before starting the series. They both left me intrigued and dramatically seduced. The realization that Louis was now a powerful immortal but still was needing to still struggle with racism as well as having a strained relationship with his family is heartbreaking. What I loved about Claudia is how we not only get to experience her point of view in the interview, but her emotional journey as a vampire trapped in the body of a teenager. People often say that Twilight was filled with toxic relationships, but no doubt this relationship is just as if not more toxic. Lestat loves Louis but wishes for him to embrace his lifestyle as a vampire. Louis loves Lestat, but feels he has no empathy for what he’s sacrificed for his love or for the fact that Claudia is the closest thing he could have to the life he’ll never have. Claudia loves Louis and was grateful the skills Lestat taught her. However she hates that Louis chooses to heed to Lestat when he abuses them and doesn’t care about their own feelings. This season finale was literally a bloodbath and tragic romantic one. The revelation of Armand definitely surprised me, and I was “tell me more, tell me more!” 🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏾🧛🏾‍♀️❤️💔🩸🖤⚰️🏳️‍🌈

Also just cuz he ends up being a main character in the later books doesn't mean people have to like him, or that his perspective is more correct than Louis. I mean, haven't they ever heard of Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Bates Motel, where the main characters are, like, bad and can't really be trusted? You can have a great main character without thinking you have to excuse their actions or even like them lol. It’s just the ones who do, it looks especially bad because they end up minimizing the effects of domestic violence and racism because they wanna stan a bad white boy. The Mayfair Witches doesn't really cross over with Interview, but does in later novels. Mainly through a group that studies and records the supernatural. Season one of Mayfair introduces you to this group. I don't know if there is to be a 2nd season of Mayfair. What Lestat told them about his maker Magnus was 100% true. Season 2 of Interview still is based on the 1st book. Hopefully, they will get to The Vampire Lestat, if there is a 3rd season.

    I have read the books and they are very different from the show. They changed a lot of it to adapted it into a series that Present day audiences would enjoy. I'm still a fan of the series because they still managed to capture the essence of the novels in the series, and it's so damn good! ❤ it's a must-read, just be prepared for a lot of the details to be different.

    I am so glad I decided to watch one episode at a time, and then watch your reaction video right after. That Part 1 fading in after all those twists and turns is so tantalizing! Hoping we get a season 2 so bad
