ITV Schools on Channel Four - first day 14th Sept 1987

*PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO THIS CHANNEL TO RECEIVE LATEST UPLOADS*
Some junctions from the first day of the Autumn Term 1987, when ITV schools programmes made their full time move over to Channel Four!
The first programme was Environments, and there's clips in and out of Seeing and Doing, Your Living Body and Basic Maths.
We get to see some shots inside and outside the previous home of ITV Schools during that last programme (previously posted as a separate clip.)
There was at least a minute of black before the opening animation, but I didn't think you really needed to see that too.
The Scotch tape I recorded this on kept playing up, so I stopped using it about half way through. These were the last items on the tape, and as I'd put the recording dates on the label, I could tell this was from the first Monday morning, in the event that I'd forgotten after 27 years.
Music details in case you don't already know them: 'The Journey' (original library track was 6 mins long) and 'Just a Minute'

I remember our teacher, when I were at junior school, fast-forwarding a video tape and we all protested that she was skipping the roto sequence and one-minute clock. She called us a weird bunch and compromised to let it play from just after the half-minute mark. To this day I think she was the weird one for not wanting to watch it.

Ironically When on days it was too wet outside to be in the playground we used to have a disney vid on at lunch time teacher would fast forward through the mickey mouse idents and trailers we would protest and she would laugh and say too late nearly there now but she would let us see the roto and countdown all the way through when in lessons to this day i wonder if one particular teacher had to do all the recording at home or if they would take it in turns depending on the subject setting the auto record for they were at school teaching us

I hope someone sees my comment after such a long time but I grew up with these Idents and programs. I was 13 when these were aired. I have such fond memories of sitting in the assembly hall with the rest of the classes and the teacher would wheel out the big TV for us to watch these programs while she made notes and we watched. Why oh why don't we have teaching like this today. The Ident and music by James Aldenham stuck with me throughout my years and inspired me to learn about computers and buy my own synthesizers to make my own music. Schools programs taught you so much more than Biology, Geography etc.. They inspired you and sparked your interests which were very much encouraged back then. What a horrible dystopian society we live in today. Thank you so much for posting this video, I remember all these programs (not so much the content lol). I want to be 13 again .. lol

ccateni 28 Before 1988 I think, ITV franchises would introduce the programmes that they made for the network with their ident before the titles of the programme would start. So for Environments it would of had the iconic Thames Television ident come up before it started. From 1988 onwards this no longer was a thing and just the production end cap came up at the end instead, in 1989 it was “ A Thames Television production for ITV “ at the end of their programmes, with their logo above it.

Oracle in-vision were shown on Channel 4 prior to the start of schools transmission on Monday 14th September 1987 and what I recall was that they faded out dead on 09:27 because the ITV Schools rotor blocks would be on the screen at 09:28 and the countdown clock at 09:29.

  • @ClydebridgeStation

    @ClydebridgeStation

That first day, it wasn't quite faded out. The Oracle in vision pages crashed out at 09:27. Normally, in the last 15 minutes prior to the first programme of the day on C4, it would be ETP-1 with testcard and music, which was then faded out. But, at least on this historic first day, it was Oracle, which, as I said, crashed out at 09:27, with a minute of black until 09:27;57, when the Journey began!

Apart from what's already been said, essentially the reason was to allow for one age-group of viewers to clear out from the area of whatever school they were watching in before potentially another age-group came in to watch the next programme. Imagine two different classes of children moving in different directions down the corridor at the same time- CHAOS. They couldn't just have one programme ending and the other starting immediately because there would be no time. Plus I think you're right about one reason being so that the teacher could get a chance to put in a blank tape and record the programme.

Carlton operated like Channel 4 using the commissioning/transmissioning method as they had commissioning editors in place so they produced no programmes of their own. It did feel strange that Thames' schools programming appeared on Channel 4 in the spring/summer terms 1993.

The very last programme shown on ITV Schools on 4 on 27th June 1993 was actually a Thames production you will find.

I think it's partly because of all the child sex abuse scandals we have been hearing about which has contributed to the decision to discontinue schools programming on television in the UK

This sound of ITV Schools 🏫 reminds of Keith Robert Ernest Hall who was born on Wednesday 27th September 1978. I used to wind Keith Hall up ⬆️ who went to Chelfham Senior School 🏫 from 1990 to 1995, now it’s called Quay View School 🏫 in Bere Alston in west Devon in the southwest of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Keith Hall says “No I did not”. Serves him right. I don’t see Keith Hall anymore since Friday 17th July 1992 for 31 years. Too long and too late ⏰ to contact Keith Hall. Keith Hall was a day boy 👦 until July 1991, then became increasingly to a boarder is 24 hours a day from July 1991 because he was mauled by a dog 🐕. John Shillito a former member of staff said to me that I have to stay at Chelfham Senior School 🏫 until July 1992 because I keep winding up ⬆️ Keith Hall everyday. Keith Hall slept 🛌 in the Annexxe. There is first and top 🔝 floor as well. I mustn’t attempt to contact Quay View School 🏫 because I could get into trouble 😈 by the school 🏫 staff and police 👮‍♂️ and it will promptly serve me right. Leave my visits to Quay View School 🏫 alone. It’s water 💦 under the bridge 🌉 and let it go over my bloody head. It’s not worth it and finally move on. ITV Schools 🏫 moved to Channel 4 in September 1987 and now it’s been fired since perhaps the year 2009. Goodbye 👋 ITV Schools 🏫. It won’t be coming back again anymore. 👍

    Why is ITV on 4?

It was moved to Channel 4 and S4C Wales in 1987 not only because ITV provided schools programming for 30 years but also because ITV had to provide an entertainment-based morning service in the same way as BBC1 did in October 1986. Also the IBA gave the go-ahead as fourth channel transmitter coverage had reached 99.9% of the population by 1987 so they had to ensure that ALL schools would be able to receive the fourth channel services.

Christopher Williams Could they not have rebranded it?

No. It had to be called ITV Schools because at the time the ITV companies still provided the schools programming as they produced the programmes, but had to display on screen the fact that they were shown on Channel 4 and S4C so as not to confuse viewers. The rebranding only came in in September 1993 when Channel 4 were independent of ITV.
