Terry was a fantastic manager, not just for his expertise but for the fact that the players genuinely liked him and he believed in his methods and responded accordingly. He is a football man from top to bottom, and one of the best managers we ever had. Thank You Terry Venables.

Nah, Hoddle was strong tactically but had zero man management skills. Venables great at both.

Keegan sums it up: Not the best tornument in terms of quality football but it was certainly one of the most atmospheric tornuments ever, also england vs germany semi final is one of the best,dramatic and atmospheric football matches of all time

Wilson was great presenter

Keegan would have loved it if Fergie fell off his seat!

Good old Tezza. He remains the last England manager who went out to attack and win games, playing football the way it should be played. Just imagine what he could have done with this current generation of players. Grealish would be the first name on his team sheet, that's for sure.

I thought Glenn Hoddle was just as good. I have always said that losing both managers so soon was the biggest mistake that could have happened as with that golden generation coming though both managers would have got the best out of those players by playing the right systems, and would have won something for sure

dan taylor Ferdinand wasn't really International class imo. He never did much under any of Taylor, Venables or Hoddle. Ian Wright would be a better super sub imo, but Venables didn't even have him in the squad, preferring a young Fowler. Tbf Wright seemed to miss more than he scored in his England career.

Lucas Maximus WTF? He was a damned sight better than Sheringham or Anderton. I think everyone forgets how good Les was, He scored 29 goals in his first season with Newcastle, 80 goal for QPR, 33 for Hotspur but yeah since when did prolific goal scoring become a staple diet for a striker?

dan taylor Scoring regularly in the premier league doesn't automatically mean a striker can translate that form to international level. The facts are he didn't get much game time with either Taylor, Venables or Hoddle. I haven't got anything against Ferdinand, but if three managers didn't really fancy him, that indicates he was missing something in his game for International level, which is a different style of football to the premier league. Lot's of strikers struggle to replicate their league form. Anderton wasn't a striker anyway, he was a right sided midfielder. Sheringham had a great partnership with Shearer in Euro '96 and proved his worth to England.

@@lucasm3879 still can't help but think it was a mistake not to use a single substitute in the entire 120 minutes in the semi. Fowler, Ferdinand and maybe even Barmby should've been brought on even if it was just with a minute to go just to take a penalty in the shootout.

Because the F.A were investigating him for financial irregularities. i.e a conflict of interests.

kilo bailey He left himself because he knew he was going to be found guilty of financial irregularities and it would have been a big scandal. In Januray '98 he was found guilty for lot's of stuff like back handers and lining his own pockets when he was in charge of Spurs. He must have known what was going to happen before the '98 world cup, so thought it was better to step down after Euro '96 than after qualifying had finished.

Back in the great game soon and he was went to manage Australia

Terry was a great manager and the players loved him, so the FA got rid of him and brought in Glen Hoddle. Sorry, however, Hoddle was not in the same league as Terry Venables.

The FA got rid of Venebles because of the Court case that he had over his head with accusations of Fraud from Alan sugar. Which he was found guilty of. Hoddle made the mistake of bringing in his Christian beliefs into the England team to make the team have more belief which rattled the Labour government at that time and wanted to make an example out of him.

i remember england wanted fergie as manager. that was never gunna happen. that would have been embarrassing.
