ITTS Uncle Scotty Stories: Marine Shooting

1979 Van Nuys, a case of beer… 2 Marines trying to impress 2 young ladies… not a good combination.

Terminal ballistics defying logic... Took an outstanding lowlight pistol course from Scottie and Louis Awerbuck (RIP) back in the day where we were shooting a moving dummy target that had a ballcap on its head. Though it was getting dark you could see many of our rounds flying in to the target as they were backlit by our handheld or weapon-mounted lights (even at 100 lumens, which was considered a lot back then :D). One round from my 40cal Glock 22 seemed to laser right into a headshot but suddenly shot straight up vertically. Scottie cleared the range and we went up to examine the dummy target--you could see a burned/shredded bullet path on the bill of the ballcap, but the head of the dummy was completely unharmed! Terminal ballistics defying logic indeed!

I used to own a Nylon 66, but I had the good sense never to handle it or any other firearm while under the influence of alcohol. As for the wound channel, I've heard of some pretty bizarre ones, but this incident takes the cake. If I correctly understood Scotty's description, the bullet ricocheted over three feet through flesh and bone. I don't see how such an anemic round as a 22LR could have done this unless it exited the thigh and reentered through the chest wall and into the heart. Either way, this is the most unusual shooting story I've encountered since the fox shot the hunter.

That was death by stupidity. I apologize for sounding callous, but Marines are taught to be riflemen. One is taught to respect weapons and not misuse them. This is also a good reminder that .22LR can be a deadly round.
