ITIL® 4 Foundation Exam Preparation Training | A Value Stream example of a bank loan (eLearning)

Value Streams are extremely efficient tools for mapping the steps happening between a trigger and actual value creation for stakeholders. Technically, they are the same as processes, however the focus of mapping a value stream is different.
With Value Streams, the goal is to map the steps that lead to value creation with continual improvement in our mind. Meaning, that we map the steps to find waste (like in Lean) and eliminate it to optimize the overall value to our customers.

Love the videos! But I am confused on this one how this is an example of a Value Stream. PIEDOD, Plan, I don't see anything there thats a plan. Improve, what was improved? Engage, was that sending the quote? Or the need for a loan itself? Design, I guess the checks and decision make sure it meets the stakeholder needs? Obtain, the very nature of the repayments being made and the loan being given satisfies that? Deliver, again the loan being paid to the stakeholder/customer? Then in reverse the quick rate quote belongs where, the loan application, eligibility checks, repaying the money? I just don't see how these steps are helping understand the concept and have left me confused if I should be trying to match them, or only a handful of the components from PIEDOD were used as I outlined in the first paragraph. Thanks for your help, and videos regardless! I'm sure I can work it out with experience!

Hi Craig Thanks for reaching out and for your kind feedback. Regarding your question, this is how I see it. PIEDOD is not the value stream itself. It is just a basic set of generic activities any organization utilizes within their value streams. So the value stream itself can contain multiple items of the PIEDOD activities or there might be value streams, which don't contain all PIEDOD activities. We can look at it through another example of a restaurant. And a restaurant may also have more than one value stream (e.g serving food or organizing live music events), we will look at the basic food service here. And again, this is just an example on top of my head. 1. Plan: the manager of the restaurant plans the menu for the week and plans the shifts of the waiters 2. Obtain/Build: Someone orders the ingredients from the external suppliers 3. Plan: It is first day of the work week and the waiters gather together at the beginning of the shift to plan who is responsible for which table 4. Deliver/Support: the shift starts and people are being served food and drinks 5. Improve: at the end of the shift, the waiters gather together and talk about what could have been done better 6. Design/Transition: they inform the manager, that the menu was not that great so the manager can "design" a new menu. I hope this helps a little clarifying the concept. Cheers, Alex

@@valueinsights thanks so much for that fast reply! I think I get it! I like very regimented defined things and I have to relax that a bit as this is all very subject to the particular circumstances! Thanks for this course and breaking it up into bite size chunks :)
