ITER - the world's largest puzzle (2020 version)

Ғылым және технология

ITER will be world's largest experiment facility to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility fusion power.
Without fusion, there would be no life on Earth.
What we see as light and feel as warmth is the result of a fusion reaction in the core of our Sun:
hydrogen nuclei collide, fuse into heavier helium atoms and release tremendous amounts of energy in the process.
During the first phase of machine assembly, from March 2020 to December 2024, the ITER Organization will assemble the core machine-the vacuum vessel, cryostat, thermal shields, all superconducting magnets and their feeders-as well as some heating and diagnostics. Watch how it will be done in this video.
This video is a July 2020 update of the 2015 video "ITER - the world's largest puzzle."

@@tsd6916 It actually has been on the news a fair bit, especially the last couple of days, when it was first signed off, and when construction first started. It's just that it isn't currently a super high importance and general interest item yet ( since it's still decades away from producing energy, and even then it will never make electricity ), and it's all very long term. It would be nice if things like this were higher priority than a lot of other stuff though.

Ony Europe can get a team going that has china Russer japan India Korea and the USA as members working together. That investment will benefit all stakeholders and ensure Big resources to pull from all over the world while that makes it more complicated in the short run with Iter Components bind made around the world. In the long run thanks to Iter it will be possible to for that technology to be passed down into fusion powerplants that each stakeholder can build on there own. Iter will be the first of a kind but it will not be last of a kind.

Sadly it has budget of 20 bil (or around that). The US could fund it alone using 2% of yearly military budget. I think the real gold rush will happen after this test reactor fires and works. Cheap, clean, almost infinite energy, space travel (once reactors get small enough)...

watching this really makes me think : this is what Sci-fy interplanetary industries would look like. moving building-sized parts with gigantic trucks and humongous cranes, things that are orders of magnitude bigger than everything that surrounds us in our daily lives. this will come again when we will be making starbases and colonization ships, thanks for this glimpse of the future !

I'm not subscribed to any physics magazines or newsletters or such, but I feel like it shouldn't have to be when this is so big and I had multiple teachers who could have brought it up. Edit: Also, I don't know if I was drunk or tired or whatever when I wrote this comment but I have a Bachelor's not a Masters... but still in Physics. So the point still stands if being lessened.

Amazing project , even the attempt of doing such thing is so brave it almost sounds silly . I hope everything goes well from start to finish , i hope they took in consideration any possible scenario ! Two options really : this either will work like charm and everybody will be proud and happy in the end , or this could go South , really , really quick and with a loud boom at that .

@@snetmotnosrorb3946 actually its not that bad. lithium ion battery in '85 but it still not good enough until 2000's. that's just a battery, scale up to fusion power, researcher need good amount of time and money to achieve it. first major fusion reactor is hydrogen bomb in 50's but its not viable to produce power until 2030-2040. i mean its okay considering building hundred thousand kilometer of superconducting wire, gigantic vacuum vessel that can sustain extremely high energy of neutron, breeding tritium from lithium on blanket etc etc

I have two different sentiments, yet I see no contradiction. I totally think this needs to go forward, and wish them the best of luck. Beyond luck, this is some magnificent science and engineering they're doing. I'm sure a huge amount will be learned. And we need to realize, this is a research reactor, an experiment. OTOH I'm not holding my breath for any miracle source of energy. If I live to be 100, there might be a power reactor by then. And from there, who knows?
