Are we any closer to recreating the Sun's energy at ITER?

Ғылым және технология

Nuclear Fusion is the process that takes place in the heart of stars and recreating this process here on earth could create an unlimited, clean energy source. In the south of France, a project under construction could be our best hope of achieving this dream. ITER, an international collaboration of 35 countries, is now 80% complete. However, during routine tests two defects were identified in components for the key reactor (known as a tokamak). RAZOR’s Neil Cairns visits the vast construction site to see the progress that’s been made and to find out if the problems will impact the timeline to a clean energy future.

for this star, our sun to keep on shining brightly it gets its constant input from some other source. what and where are those sources

Obtaining large-scale nuclear energy using a plasma at very low pressure and in a very large volume is obviously a bad choice from the 50s, before physicists had a detailed understanding of the physics of this plasma in a magnetic field. It has nothing to do with nuclear fusion in the sun. To claim that it's an unlimited energy source is also false: it requires huge quantities of rare materials (beryllium) and lithium isotopes. This project is not at all sustainable in the contemporary sense, and not at all a project for the future.

Now I'm no expert but looking at our recent successes at JET and the Wendelstein stellarator I'd say it can't be such a terrible idea from the 50's, JET was running in the 90's I do believe so it's hardly comparable to ITER, sure many things about ITER are questionable and nothing will be commercial for decades. The pressure and temperature relationship is different to that of our sun but it's just easier to increase the temperature rather than gravity 😉 Why does it require so much lithium though? Just for tritium breeding or general electronics?

ITER is outdated, certainly, since it was designed before high-temperature superconducters were known about. Comonwealth Fusion, associated with MIT, is using the latest superconductor technology and should beat this system in time at 1/5th the cost. Others, eg Helion kzread.info/dash/bejne/kZZ4urqQgduxY5s.htmlsi=ggq-1bKgdOxA53wk is using a different, more efficient strategy which has already signed a power delivery contract to Microsoft in 2029. This field is moving VERY fast.
