Hard cast balls are best last longer and use a long cord say 100 ft plug and unplug farthest from tumbler have fun.

A couple of things about the rock tumbler and back powder, use lead shot as it doesn't spark, and plug it in outside with an extension chord. I'm sure you know this, but it's best to be double checking. 2:47 from what I've been able to put together through various videos, a hardwood will usually produce a slower burning powder than a softwood regardless of grain size. So depending on your application this could be good or bad. I've also heard that gunpowder made with Willow is the fastest burning of them all. I suspect that would be good for priming powder perhaps. It's something I'm interested in experimenting with myself. I also wonder if you can turn green wood into charcoal and what affect the additional residual water would have on the powder?

Dry season without any bark to avoid caustic ash or resinous glaze. Willow and hazel nut is the best. Alder is very good if you cool the retort down as soon as the flame stops flowing out the vent. The best char is a very slight touch of brown color, and not over heated. Pitch woods leave resins that degrade the char. Will not absorb the nitrate and sulfur as well. Crush in a tough bag and tumble to fines. Sift out any unburned, knotty chunks. Wear mask to save lungs! Love, Peace and Awareness young whippersnappers! Hoho

I got the harbor freight tumbler. The barrel stinks soooooo bbbaaaaadddd!!!!!!!!!! So I made two out of 4 inch abs , USAwith rubber end cap, USA and test cap, USA USA. Improvised, noisy, but I can breath. The lead balls are too small for a past test, so rumble, tumble, in they go!

Yes with Goex shutting down. We would have to rely on shipments from overseas for black powder. If you have to order it over the Internet. It cost you an extra 25 to $35 in Hazmat fees. Yes it's been below freezing here the last several days. So it's going to be awhile before I get out to make any black powder.

The belts hang a bit loose, but with 50 -1/2" lead balls will last a long time! I tries 100, but boggs it down and too full to tumble enough. Lube bushings and alcohol wipe the drive rollers and drum so there is no drag or slippage . Rattle away out on the deck. Open slow with a dust mask. The micro lead will sluff off in the batch of chems. Love, Peace and Awareness good buddy!

Oops, I meant 100 1/2 inch balls is perfect but 200 balls is too heavy and too full.

How did this ball mill turn out, I have the same tumbler, I’m not sure how it’ll turn out with the rubber walls instead of something harder like a glass jar

If you bend the lips of the drum out before trying to remove the lid, it will come off easier. After replacing the lid, push the lips in then the cover will go on easier.

I cast my own round balls and make my own caps but I would NEVER attempt to make my own powder. One static shock away from losing your home or life over an antiquated hobby. Not worth it.
