Turin, Italy, September 28, 2018 - Defending champions Poland never left in any doubt who the boss was, promptly took the first set to seal their 2018 FIVB World Championship semifinal ticket and knock out hosts Italy - despite eventually losing the match.
Poland totally controlled the crucial first set from the very beginning, cruising to an astonishingly easy 25-14, silencing the sellout crowd at the Pala Alpitour and prompting huge celebrations as their subs swarmed the court like it was the end of the match.
With Poland coach Vital Heynen bringing on his subs after the deal was done, Italy managed to balance the game and show just a bit more spirit to at least finish the tournament with a 3-2 (14-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 15-11) win - though it was hardly any consolation.
In a sold-out Pala Alpitour, Italy was rewarded by a warm applause despite failing to offer their best effort against Poland, who enter the semifinals with full merit.
Italy's National Anthem needed no background music as over 12,000 fans chanted it with all their voice: a perfect prelude to a barely impossible collective effort, as Poland needed to win one single set or score 61 total points to clinch first place in Pool J of the Final Six - and eliminate the home team.
It took only one set, though, with Poland too focused and tactically prepared against the desperate efforts of the opponent: coach Vital Heynen asked Michal Kubiak to mark Ivan Zaytsev one-on-one, and the experiment was a success as the Polish captain hit two killer blocks on his rival and accumulated 7 points in a single set.
After achieving the main goal, coach Heynen chose to give space to the players on the bench; and Italy, set free of the huge pressure they suffered as the host of the Final Six, could then play more freely.
As the Italians try to imagine their future and start preparing for the long road to Tokyo 2020, good news for coach Gianlorenzo Blengini came from Luigi Randazzo's impressive fourth set (7 points, 7/8 attack for the 24-year old) and Davide Candellaro's 12 points coming out of the bench. Mateusz Bieniek lead Poland's scoring with 12 points, as the others saved their best for Saturday.

Italy had to beat Poland 3-0 and not allow more than 60 points in order to advance, an almost impossible feat. Poland came out smoking in the first set and won it thereby securing their advancement. After the first set and after securing the advance, Poland put in the subs so that the starters could get additional rest for the next match.
The first set was the World Championship!

Disappointing first set by Italy they should have played at 200% but the entire team was scared. Worst game by Zaytsev in all the tournament (definitely from a motivational p.o.v., he should have carried the team, being captain/Ace and all),. It's a real shame. Good first set by Poland, obviously they changed the main team with the bench since they had to play again the next day and even though they switched players they still managed to make Italy sweat their victory. GG Poland. (Ita) Peccato, speravo nella partita della vita da parte dell'Italia, ma già dalle loro facce di intuiva come sarebbe finita. Ho sperato fino all'ultimo, ma sarà per la prossima competizione.

Our TV guys were reading Italian papers after this game laughing at the fact that in most of them they seem to not care about the fact Poland qualified after the first set and then just played without any motivation with second squad just to finish it without wasting energy and you played with your first 6. Like Italy won, ,hurray. But I guess it was needed after dissapointing end for Italy.

You're fired! Yes, that's what I said. Poland played well and even it's bench played so well that Italy had to go to the 5th set. All I'm saying is that I was disappointed to see Italy in such a state.

No bo talizman szczęścia stał w kwadracie. A tak na serio to Konarski po prostu swoim stylem gry nie pasuje na atakującego tylko na przyjęcie. Nie jest ani skoczny ani super wysoki. Do tego nie bije jakoś potężnie z drugiej linii i często przestrzela.

Вы понятия не имеете, о чем говорите. Они были счастливы после первого сета, потому что одного сета им хватило, чтобы пройти дальше. Так что со второго сета Польша поменяла состав на дублирующий состав.

They actually were so bad 1st set, lost it 14-25, it was so easy for Poland, so how can they won your heart? After first set the match has ended, because Poles were playing 2nd squad, even with this squad they took set from Italy. I thought Italy will go 200% this game, and make it so much harder for Poland, but there was no fight, 25-14! It was just domination.

Yeah, after 1 set we didn't actually care so we played with our substitutions and Italy still struggled sometimes.

I have so much respect for Italian crowd who not only stayed after this first set (in maaany countries at least half of the arena would be empty after half an hour) but also still cheered their players and enjoyed the match. Kudos for them. And anthem?! Wonderful.

Bendolo Śliwka to nieporozumienie.Kwolek jest jeszcze młody ale dobrze prosperuje.Śliwka i Szalpuk to rówieśnicy,a Bednorz jeszcze starszy,więc sobie porównaj.

@@mustaffasurrindhadirketmes166 Co do Kwolka to się zgadzam - widać po meczach w Pluslidze, że MŚ dużo mu dały ale co do Śliwki to prawda jest taka, że uratował nam tyłek w meczu z USA. Gdyby nie on może i byśmy bili się o medal ale brązowy. Zresztą tak samo jak po Kwolku widać, że po MŚ rozkwita. Bednorz jest dobrym graczem ale nie pasuje stylem gry do koncepcji Vitala (system blok - obrona) to po pierwsze, po drugie po rozmowie z J. Mielewskim w Prawdzie Siatki widać, że po wygraniu ze Skrą MP troszeczkę mu odbiło a po trzecie wiadome jest, że źle znosił krzyki trenera co wydaje mi się, że miało większe znaczenie niż jego umiejętności. Zresztą nie ma co gdybać - Mistrzostwo Świata zdobyła drużyna ze Śliwką, Szalpukiem i Kwolkiem w drużynie.
